Sidney leaders react to Fox News story saying Cabela's sale caused them to lose everything

  • City leaders in Sidney are speaking out after a Fox News segment aired this week on Tucker Carlson. In the piece, it puts Paul Singer in the cross-hairs for buying up large shares of Cabela's, and then encouraging a merger with Bass Pro Shop. Once the $5.5 billion deal was closed, approximately 2,000 Cabela's jobs disappeared. Carlson reported that Sidney lost everything, the city collapsed, and deemed Singer's actions to result in the death of Sidney. However City Manager Ed Sadler, Economic Development Director Melissa Norgard, and Mayor Roger Gallaway say new businesses are continually opening up shop in Sidney, families are moving to the area, and Sidney continues to have small town values with big time opportunities.

I worked at Cabela's and granted it's not dead but it is not like it was. Property has dropped in value. My house alone has dropped 10,000.00

"From six figure salaries to five figure salaries"
IN OTHER WORDS, TUCKER WAS RIGHT.

And how ambiguous! That six figure to five figure drop could range from $999,999 to $10,000. More realistically, $120,000 to $16,500. That’s more than a little!

What do you expect them to say. "Don't move here because our town is dead".

Sounds like a local news station trying to cover its ass after failing to do its job and Tucker stepping in and doing it for them. This station went out and found the only two people who would say, “Oh no, everything is fiiiiiine here! No worries! We lost 2,000 jobs in a town of 6,000 but no biggie! We’re grrrrrreat!”

I grew up in Sidney most of it is true but when this happened many families were stuck because property values sank. People who got out were hurt badly but they were families who moved into a house only losing around 100 thousand in cash.

As a city manager he is obviously going to say what he did. The fact is that the buyout did devastate Sidney. Not only Sidney but several smaller towns around it that supplied a percentage of Cabela’s workforce as well. He can dress it up as much as he wishes but everybody around the local area knows what it did.

Tucker didn't say Sidney was dead. He said it was decimated. Big difference. Also Paul Singer, the man who forced the merger, likes to sue people who are critical of his actions. And people are afraid of him.

    • @sarasotauptoseattle

He actually said it was "desiccated" (IE: "dried up"), which is actually more mild than "decimated" (IE kill/destroy/remove), so your point is actually stronger than you thought.

Homes are selling Mr Sadler? I just checked Zillow. I certainly wouldn't want to relocate my family from Sydney right now. Those homes are just sitting and cutting their asking price. Those homeowners are likely upside down in their loan. Very sad that the leadership there can't be compassionate for the plight of his constituents.

this is as also called being under water,, thats when the value of the house and selling cost of the house is to the amount you still have to pay on your payment plan is a far much more in debt. the selling price of a home here in sidney is where you are going to lose out big time when and if you put your house up on the market. by the way my legal name is bobby patty ann dunn,, a legal name change in memory of patty who i and her being together in a relationship,, patty passed away from heart failure. any how i live with my present girlfriend and we committed to each other. well her and i do live here in sidney and her and i wouldn't be losing that much money to make the move to live in a actual city that does have a lot more to offer. remember we would still need to carefully make the transition to be smooth. things like finding a buyer for the home we are currently living in. securing where you are going to be living at in the place you are moving to,,, and also remember that means finding a new job. also don't forget the packing and loading up the biggest straight frame u haul truck that they have and a rental trailer for hauling 2 cars. i am getting tired of the drama in sidney. to me this is town that i can say that i want to spend the rest of my life in. my girlfriend and i would love to move and to live in a actual city. i used to live in madison wisconsin for most of my life and i got many very nice friends there and they treat me with nice respect. i've introduced my girlfriend to my friends back in madison wisconsin during the times i took my girlfriend with me and to visit madison and my friends respect my girlfriend. i would love to see me and my girlfriend to be living in a place that has much more to offer and also better people who that are friendly and respectful. life is to short,, you want to make the most out of it.

If your city manager goes on TV and says that losing two thousand jobs, in a town with a total population of only six thousand people is anything short of a really big deal.....it's time for a new city manager.

One more thing. The city manager, Ed Sadler's last name sounds like he may be a fellow "Amish" trℹbesman himself. I would love to know the ethnicity of the thousand new residents that moved into the town are, but I guess that would make me sound racist when all I am is inquisitive. Sorry to harping on this.

OK, I'd like to see real data on population, salary, general income, new business, and the size of the tax base before and after. Of course, neither Carlson nor the Mayor are providing any of that. Meaning both stories are probably fudging for effect. From what I can gather, losing 2000 jobs from a population of about 6000-8000 could not have been good. New businesses would help, but did they replace all of those jobs, first of all, and do those jobs pay comparably to the ones lost? Given that he said many had to go from six-figure to five-figure incomes, which, as someone already pointed out, encompasses a pretty big range, this seems unlikely.
