- I find a custom built Sci Fi looking car from the fifties with a crazy backstory that I can't confirm. In part 1 we inspect and try to determine who made this thing and why? Stay tuned @Squarepeg Fab to see where this goes.
That is a very odd pice of kit You have there. A load of good ideas coupled with some old ideas. Tube frame with a solid front axel just blows ones mind. When You said warped metal I was a bit taken. Only because off the bat before You got into it I just assumed it was an early fiberglass car. Back then there were quite a few dyi glass built one offs. Being that fiberglass was the new thing in the 50's. I will be very interested to see what & if You can find out more about this early & unique build. Cheers
Yes indeed, check out part 2.1 for new info
That's the remnants of a 55 6 or 7 T-Bird
Yep one thing it took some time to get it to the shape it's in! 👍 I will stay tuned.
Thanks!
Looks like Something Ian Roussell built for Victor Caucho😮
Thanks!
I think the salt flat racer is a good theory. They wouldnt have covered the undercarriage or added the volume to the oil pan or built a tube chassis for a movie or Batman car. It having headlights is confusing though . Maybe added by a new owner who had different ideas for the car ?
Agreed, but headlights were clearly made by the original builder.
Definitely deserves to be finished. 😉
For now, mechanical refresh only

I'd bet you can find history on this in "the little pages" ....aka old hot rod mags and old kustom mags.
I would guess it was being built as a saltflats car. Going by the bottom. Aerodynamics and all .. also is that a TR7 under the cover ?? And a yellow one at that !!
That IS one of the stories I was told. And one of the previous owners lived within half a day away from Bonneville! Still no proof though. P.S. Watch my other videos to figure out what the orange car is. It's NOT a TR7 (or British)
It's an OTAS GRAND PRIX.

It’s all going to be about the gearing on it. But I was thinking the 2spd rear makes a lot of sense also for a high speed mid HP car. That’s hilarious that you answered the second question without an answer. I’ll without doubt watch the videos .😄
It is.
Thunderbird!
Engine only!
The fenders look ,like they were made from 4 rear quarter panels
IMO the original builder had experience in the aircraft industry. Hardly anybody building hotrods in that era would have been able to fabricate a frame like that, let alone hammer form the body (it's steel, correct?)
Yes, all steel. and the seams have been leaded, but not finished.
If it was me .I would send some pictures to Gene Winfield. He might know something about it.
I did, but no response

he's busy and 95ish last I spoke to him. if you're in California... he's at a lot of the local shows and races.
that hood scoop is "baby bird" tbird
That's a Treasure. Someone put a lot of time into that. I like it I think it's a wonderful project with great possibility. I recognize the carb off of 55 T-Bird. And that tubular frame that's the labor of love. She's for setting a speed record on the Salt Flat. Can't wait to see what you do with it.
Thank you very much!
I saw this for sale on FB Marketplace last week or so. The gauges look like Studebaker (mine is a '57 and has those) as well as the partial machine turned dash. I think it was around $4000. The ad claimed it was made for a Batman movie.
that's pretty cool whatever it is. needs to be finished
Thanks
MONEY PIT😊
I hope not
Love the old tach drive!
Thanks&thumbs up.
Thanks for watching!
I know this is a long shot, but I watch, read, and study a lot of vintage drag racing material. Without looking at the rest of the car underneath, this kind of looks like an early dragmaster frame from the front end ?
I could see that, but it's so wide in the rear that I don't think it is. Def made for two people.
Any chance you found this thing around Burns Oregon? My Dad used to tell about his friend in high school whose father owned a wrecking yard built a "sports car" from scrap and I imagined it looking something like this by his description.
Oregon Yes, Burns No. See my 3rd video where we discover who built it.
Very kool !
I subbed after watching this. I have an interest in odd cars and this one sure has my attention. The underside was a surprise to see how smooth it is. I like it!
Awesome, thank you!
I also subbed after watching this.
Casper the friendly ghost custom car
Thanks
That is quite a custom, sir. Can you imagine how much time went into this car? I was expecting to see a small block Chevy and a Corvette rear diff. That two speed rear and the full belly pan... (lucky you!)... makes me think Pike's Peak car or another similar event, to include salt flats. Congrats on your find, it's truly one of a kind automobile. This may be the only time in my life I say I'm glad you found it before I did! Best of luck, can't wait to see it done.
Absolutely! it must have taken years. check Part 2.1 for more of what I found out about it. (and a test drive!)

Kustomrama and H.A.M.B. have a great network of old dudes with old-dude-knowledge and historians.
Perhaps a purpose built Mille Miglia car which would explain the pop-up headlights, large oil pan and flat underside. The last Mille was in 1957 after the Ferrari crash which ended the project???
Cool mystery! Did ya get any paperwork with it? Does it have a VIN?
Yes, both! registration back to '64.
@@squarepegfab-tb5cm cool! Maybe that will help tell the story.
This thing screams 1950s Lotus.
I could sorta see that, except big and not terribly light.
@@squarepegfab-tb5cm Ya I dont have the advantage of seeing it in person, just the overall shape. Glad to see you figured out what it was. The way the undercarriage was enclosed and the Ford engine made me think Lotus.
That's a cool custom.
Thanks
Maybe the oil pan was crushed someone welded on the bottom of of another pan that's my guess
Look at first glance
Could be a blade runner original movie car😮
With the panned undercarriage, and the additional oil capacity, I'd say some form of racing. Someone just building a hot rod wouldn't really incorporate all that, nor would that be in a movie car, they are always just "skin deep". But why headlights? Wouldn't need or want them for salt flat racing. Perhaps it was constructed for some form of road rally or endurance racing? The track they run the 24 hours of Daytona dates back to the 1950's (6 hour races until I think the mid 60's), but not sure if they allowed home built, or if cars had to be based on production models. But perhaps a purpose for it. I love a mystery, especially auto related. I really want to follow this now and see what you come up with.
I agree. Check part 2.1 for more info and a test drive
It looks like the motoring equivalent of a whale 🐋😂. Could it have been a thunderbird originally?.
Engine yes, the rest, no.
I'm saying it looks a lot like a 56 Lincoln
no way
