- My channel was hijacked, here's how. On Aug 2 I received a sponsorship offer from Black Magic Designs. I googled them and they appeared legitimate. In the past I always rejected such offers. I wanted my channel to be authentic and grow naturally. But, lately my channel has been struggling so I accepted. They sent me a file with a promo package, I opened it and in an instant my life was ruined. The hackers immediately disabled my google accounts, changed my passwords, disables two step verification and recovering methods. Worst of all they hijacked my Bronze Cowboy UA-cam channel! All in the blink of an eye. This is not just a warning to fellow UA-camrs, but, for everyone out there.
Fortunately, the UA-cam support team responded and helped me recover my channel and my videos. It took a week. But, the damage was done. I can only wait to see what the impact on my channel will be in the long run. I had to repost over 1000+ videos one by one. I learned a lesson here and I want to share my experience with you, my fans. DO NOT CLICK ON ANY FILES sent to you unless you you are ABSOLUTELY sure who sent them and that they don't contain malware. Just don't click.
What happens now depends on you, my fans, PLEASE re-watch my videos, share them. I have new videos coming. So, with your support
I might be able to get back on track and continue spreading laughter throughout the World.
Finally, thank you to all my fans that reached out to me during this crisis. Your kind words have helped me through this ordeal. I know I am not the first to be hacked and I won't be the last. I learned a valuable lesson and I just wanted to share it with you.

I'm _SO_ happy that YT actually helped you get your accounts back!! Sorry you had to upload all those videos from scratch again, that sucks! I absolutely _LOVE_ your content so I would have been a very sad bunny to see it disappear. There really are some horrible and unscrupulous people out there, willing to prey on others just for some clout or to try and sell their scam "products" or "services" (I use those terms _VERY_ loosely!) to other unfortunate victims. Honestly, I have no idea how they think hijacking someone else's channel does them _ANY_ good or how they think they can make a profit from it. It's just pathetic.
So YAY for getting our Bronze Cowboy back again!! And hopefully - just like a statue - you'll be a permanent feature of this site for many years to come!

I already commented but after I then read your bio about the hack I felt really bad. That's worse than getting your wallet or purse stolen. Hate to see it happen to you, but glad you got the channel back. I always advise people to setup two accounts your main and one for emails and such on an old laptop. You can open and do whatever on the second account without affecting the main.

I would love to be the one kicking in the door where they are set up. I would be filming the FBI agents walking in and slamming them up against the wall as they read them there rites. Unfortunately, hackers are hacking many channels, stealing the money and creativity that those who became their pray had worked so hard and putting in many hours of work to achieve great work. I am so sorry that you became one of their targets. Unfortunately, dirt bags are out there, too lazy or not talented enough to make their own channels. When I saw that Tesla symbol yesterday tied to your work, I knew that you became one of their prey. I have seen that symbol before. I was going to tell you, but later I saw a drop that you made, that you were aware of your channel had been hacked. Beware of emails that you do not recognize that has an attachment. The attachment has a script that will open a way in for these hackers to create havoc and destroy all your hard work. Glad that UA-cam has been helping you retrieve your stolen work! I have a friend that his account hacked as well, it pays to actually go to the companies official website and contact them direcetly. I am glad you have your account back my friend.
Sad to see some of your earliest commentators are missing the severity of the situation, but fans will be fans... I know that feeling can be devastating and stressing, and worry not about the algorithm as you are already a viral sensation.
They are thieves, and any thief is too lazy to work for what they want.
Society has got to force administration's to pursue and prosecute these people to the fullest extent of the law.
Sorry for all the trouble they created for you. Attacking someone that puts out quality videos and just makes people happy.

I once worked for a company (200+ employees) where a secretary send out a mass email warning everyone to NOT open a particular message with a particular subject line that was getting emailed around because it contained malware. The same person then proceeded to open the same email the next day. It took almost 4 days for our miniscule IT "department" to clean out the email server & get over a hundred PCs working properly again. It's almost obscenely easy to be lulled into a sense of "yeah, this one's OK to open" because there are *SO* many ways for hackers & other online undesirables to execute various forms of what we used to refer to as "social engineering." I've worked in network security and can say "for sure" that far more knowledgeable IT specialists than you have gotten their tail feathers chomped on... I'm sorry you had to learn that lesson this way, but at least you were able to (mostly) recover. Don't kick yourself when you're down, it happens A LOT, just take a deep breath and know we're all out here waiting to watch you scare the daylights out of more unsuspecting tourists!
I can honestly say that I can not get enough of that desperado of laughter. This video had bejeebers flying everywhere. Glad to hear that you are recovering. So sorry! have friends and relatives that have both been hacked on Facebook so much so one of them is trying not even trying to do Facebook anymore.
One good thing that it is August and you have some time to go through a nightmare scenario. You don't want to be sitting outside in 115F+, if you are then you are a better man than I am, I am far beyond ready for Monsoon to end. I know many folks that have had the same "stuff" happen to them as well. The scammers are running wild, trust nothing.

Unfortunately it would seem all of UA-cam is suffering of late. I sincerely hope you've diversified an began uploading to alternate tech sites. Rumble is a good start and are giving 100% of channel support to the channel this year instead of their normal 20% take. Personally I'm a big fan of Locals. I feel they offer closer contact with your audience as well as allowing for direct support through it avoiding the unreliable patreon and paypal.
There are some sad people in this world.
I honestly believe that there is a special place in Hell for scammers and the like.

So sorry to hear this.
Sadly, people can pose as anyone nowadays, so even googling won't help you. You just have to have a strict rule in your head of never opening unknown executable files in email attachments or from links in emails etc. Malware can be customized so that it doesn't get detected by any Antivirus programs (at least not for several days), during which those files fly under the radar. So the best protection is to use common sense and have strict rules about not running any executable files you're sent. Insist that they send you a presentation as a PDF file (which should be mostly harmless, if you keep your PDF viewer up to date), or in case it's a video, that they upload it to UA-cam for example. But nothing you have to run yourself. Plus you have to keep all your programs up to date, in case they have vulnerabilities.
By the way, once infected, the installation is not to be trusted anymore, because they could leave a backdoor on your system. You don't have to destroy any hardware like the drive or anything, but it's highly advised to perform a fresh installation of your operating system and set the software up from scratch.
Yes. I've always been careful but I fell for a trap. I'm not very computer savvy. I don't know about operating systems and restarting programs. Time to learn.
