Come on, Emma. He's actually REALLY socially functional for a computer nerd!
I think it's great that the last line for Emma was "THAT is not Emma approved." Her saying "that" rather than "he" emphasizes how disconnected she is from the fact that she is manipulating PEOPLE. She treats those around her as her play things she has the ability to control, rather than human beings with feelings.
"Do you like nacho cheese?"
"Not as much as I used to."
Haaaaa!
Fav part of episode!
Edenn G
Mine too!
jenfullmoon Yep.
Definitely my favourite lines of the episode, too!
Aww, Martin is adorable. I don't care if Emma doesn't approve. I approve!
why wouldn't someone approve? he's so sweet!
THE BEGINNING OF B-MART MY FAVE
He's totally reminds me of Travis from Clueless which makes sense because it's basically suppose to be the same character...great casting! Also the first thing that came into my head when I saw the title "I know you can be overwhelmed and you can be underwhelmed...but can you ever just be whelmed?" Points if you get the reference.
10 Things ... oh I love that
"Is the opposite of disaster, aster?" :D
Zoë McLean
sure! like ist the opposite of dislike, it only makes sense :D
G-g-gavin Free?
I think you can in Europe.
Please, please, please let Mr. Collins show up as a consult client.
You were 4 years ahead, wow
You are a time traveler!
I LOVE Martin! No wonder Harriet likes him! This adaptation just keeps getting better!
*"But my friends call me B-Mart!"*
HAHAHA I snorted.
I snorted chocolate milk all over my jeans.
I'm so glad Knightly forced her into this. Seeing Emma take on some frustration builds her character and forces her to start chipping away at that really, REALLY shiny armor of perfect that she puts on. I'm really looking forward to seeing her be real and down to earth with us.
Martin: I won a 20-year supply of nacho cheese!
Emma: Do you like nacho cheese?
Martin: Not as much as I used to.
HAHAHAHA!
i've never fully appreciated the emma woodhouse character. i didn't dislike her but i didn't exactly like her either. seeing her brought into a modern context and played by such a dynamic, beautiful actress seems to be exactly what it took to finally tip the scales. well played, pemberley digital.
I scrolled through the comments before I watched, so I thought I was ready for the "B-MART!" part....I wasn't and now I'm dying laughing
I think at first Martin was meant to come off as a buffoon but as he talked more, the viewers learned that he's actually rather intelligent, a hard worker and someone who enjoys what he enjoys. But Emma is stuck on whatever her initial judgement is. That's the whole point of Emma. She makes quick judgements and goes from there. At this point, she's made an entire career based around it.
I like this interpretation of Martin. He's an honest, hard working, and sweet guy. That's exactly what he should be.
"Do you like nacho cheese?"
"Not as much as I used to"
+Anya Brante he looked so sad about that.
the lesbian couple advice is very approved! always nice to see support
I love his face when he says: Not as much as I used to....!
"So you like nacho cheese?" "Not as much as I used to.." Excellent lines.
Gosh he's adorable.
"I can smell interest like a shark smells blood!"
oh emma honey. so oblivious.
He reminds me of Kristoff from Frozen.
Just as adorable and slightly sad as he should be. Love Martin.
HOLY SHIT
I go to a community college, am pursuing a career in ornithology, and SPENT LAST SUMMER WORKING ON ISLANDS IN SEABIRD CONSERVATION AND REPRODUCTION.
MARTIN IS ME?
You can’t play him he’s mine!?!?!
*****
Yeahhh, I'm also a woman. Minor details, pshh.
scolopaceouscourlan There’s an app for that.
The casting an portrayal of the characters continue to be so spot on for this show
"not as much as I used to" Oh my goooood- Martin is PERFECTION!
The more I see of Emma Woodehouse, the more I like her as a character. I think the actress is doing a great job. She brings Emma to life and makes her a lot more relatable than the character from the book (much as I love Austen).
"Your parents named you Martin Martin!?" - totally something I would have said.
loving the throwaway lesbian
IT'S TIGERMONKEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think he works quite well as a modern-day take. He strikes you as the kind of person who works hard and is quite clever and passionate about what he does. Like the Martin in the book though, he doesn't have a high social standing. In the book it's because of his occupation and social hierarchy, whereas this Martin is just a bit socially awkward and nerdy (aka awesome). You get the impression he's a lovely person and you just need to get to know him, rather than judging him at face value, as Emma does.
Thank you so much for the queer representation (Charlie). That's what regular media needs more of. It may seem inconsequential, but it means a lot to people who rarely get to see anyone like them in entertainment. Even Emma, the most judgemental person ever, doesn't judge people for being gay. Thank you.
"Your parents named you Martin Martin?!" Hahaha best bit XD
Aw he's so great! B-Mart can stay :)
Martin: BUT MAH FRIENDS CALL ME B-MART!
Emma: ...
Emma does not approve, lol.
I love Martin so much. He's been on-screen for five seconds and I already love him.
"I did once win a year supply of nacho cheese."
"Do... you like nacho cheese?"
"...Not as much as I used to."
Martin went to City College? Was Greendale full? GO HUMAN BEINGS!
oh my god martin's actor's delivery of the "not as much as i used to" line is perfect idc about anything else
oh emma how you wish everyone in the world would be exactly like what you approve and agree with everything you said, how perfect and not boring the world would be
He's SOOO sweet
It's really weird seeing this online after seeing 8 new episodes of Emma at Buffer fest. Those that weren't at Buffer, you're in for a treat, the next 8 episodes are fantastic.
Every once in a while I remember how many characters have to be introduced and how much has to happen before Knightley and Emma get engaged, and I get super excited. "Emma" is such a rich story, and we've barely started it. So much to look forward to!
Exactly !
Not only that but I can't even fathom how most of it can be "translated" into the modern age, so much of it is so based on the societal rules of the time that are just nothing now.
Emma's haters really DON'T understand Jane Austen's novel! As a Janeteis, I do like this adaptation and how they are trying to bound it with our time!
Martin's such a cutie! Awww! :)
I really love Emma Approved. I always have a Monday to look forward to :)
...And that, Ladys and Gentlemen, is how "friend first, matchmaker second" flew out of the window.
Best. Character. Intro. Ever. XD
When will we meet miss Bates?! I'm seriously missing hearing about her letters from Jane! xD
I was wondering that too. Who will she be? Annoying office neighbor who comes into chat and never leaves?
Edenn G sounds plausible!
Edenn G I'm thinking maybe she could be one of the 1 hour consultations that just won't stop coming back, so Emma is forced to interact with her not out of social obligations but financial.
As soon as anyone says Miss Bates, I just feel so guilty.
The way Emma looked down on her so much…
Emma has never been my favorite Austin character and I'm finally realizing why. Emma has good intentions but her privileged background has given her no context for empathizing with those outside of her social class. (Well done, by the way, on translating British hierarchy into American social class.) It's painful, and not a little insulting, to have someone so oblivious handing out advice. But empathy and compassion come with maturity, so I'm gritting my teeth and waiting for Emma to grow up! :)
while I agree that she's really bratty and spoiled and not really in a great position to be giving advice, I think somehow the actress (sorry I dunno her name) makes her completely adorable and lovable anyways? and that is a seriously tough thing to do :P
Austen, not Austin, please!
I love this episode -- I think it's perfectly IC. Emma helping her wonderful/adorable friends who are pretty and treat her like she's an all-knowing goddess = fun. Emma helping random people who are so not on her level = Emma Disapproved. I love her.
Aww Martin is adorable! Great casting as usual guys!
reminds me soooo much of Travis from Clueless. Success!
Her face at 'B-Mart' is priceless.
Martin has such a baby face. I want to hug him... but then he did that b-mart thing...
GGAAAHHH MARTIN IS TOO CUTE!
Oh, Martin is absolutely perfect! Bravo, cast and crew! Love him and his obvious sweetness combined with obvious (at least to Emma) lack of sophistication.
Just directed a play version of Emma at the school I work at, I got the whole cast addicted to Emma Approved!
Martin reminds me of Flnt from Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs!!! Both his face and his personality. And he's an IT guy, that totally fits.
Loved this episode! The modernization of Robert Martin was excellent!!!
The writing in this episode was so spot on. Loved the Martin Martin and nacho cheese lines. XD
He's so ADORABLE!!!!!
Tigermonkey! I wondered if he'd gotten involved in the show when Joanna turned up on his vlog. Still didn't see this coming.
Also, yay more characters! Things seems like they're really going to start moving along now.
Martin is adorkable
Omg! Martin is sooooo adorable! How could you not love him??
Emma, stop judging people after fleeting "first impressions"! Martin seems totally lovable and for all we know he could be a world renowned thumb-wrestling champ!
This is a great interpretation of Mr. Martin. I love how this team has modernized the characters and the situation.
I did not know putting * * around words made them bold.
You learn something every day.
The eleventh episode, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month. If that wasn't planned, it was a lot freakier than I thought!
The 2013 World Thumb Wrestling champion is Martin! Tigermonkey meets Emma Approved is The Greatest Mash-Up, EVER! Why I didn't see this coming with James' last Read This segment on Geek & Sundry Vlogs, I've not clue-one.
Oh Martin is great!! Nacho cheese comment was so funny! :)
Somehow I knew Emma was going to say "I hate you," before Alex even picked up her call!
Robert Martin is sooooo adorable!! Great casting!!
I love how he looks genuinely concerned when the sound cuts out for those few brief seconds on the call. :)
Martin is so cute!
LOL! Emma kept giving him the look like "HIM? What, is he funny or something?"
B-mart has awesome eyebrows! They should have their own show! :P
Really, really loving this so far! The casting continues to be perfect and Emma and Knightley's dynamic is fantastic.
Martin is SO FRIGGIN ADORABLE!
Love his face when he first popped up on screen!
And now I'm just imagining Caroline Lee meeting B Mart.
The nacho cheese thing cracked me up! Way to go TigerMonkey!
Thanks Paige!
"Not as much as I used to"
I love this!
OMGGGGGG TIGERMONKEY IS IN EMMA APPROVED !
Juliette you don’t even know I AM FREAKING OUT RIGHT NOW!!!
*****
You shouldn't be, you're great in this episode ! And I'm so happy that we'll get to see you in many more for the next year or so :)
Emma! How can you say that? Martin seems nice, maybe a little bit confused, but nice :D
Can anyone else also hear Emma's approval of Martin falling to the ground and past it?
The acting is really great ! I'm amazed Martin is perfect he is absolutely how I was excepting him to be
Tigermonkey is in the show now? That's awesome! Great casting, and I'm sure that he is super excited to be a part of this.
Dude.... yes. Very much yes.
Awww, Martin is perfectly, adorably, cast.
OMG!!! It's Tiger Monkey!!! She was just in his vlog!!! LOL. THIS IS TRES MAGNIFIQUE!
Is anyone else in love with Martin?
Bmart is hilarious. And "not as much as I used to" is hilarious
Awww Martin is so adorbs!
I am loving Emma more and more!
Ok... Totally starting to love this series!
"Not as much as I used to." - first time I laughed out loud watching EA, but it was worth the wait. Bless little B-Mart.
I love this! And both Alex Knightly and Bobby are very cute.
I think out of all of the characters introduced Martin is the most natural in front of the cameras, so yay casting!
Ah man thanks wondersdancing, that makes me really happy to hear that!
Awwww! Martin is adorable!
B Mart is awesome :)
Martin's eyebrows are amazing, though.
B-mart is hilarous! Hilarity should be Emma Approved.
her fACE when he says my friends call me bMART oh my hgod that was amazing
exactly she was so shocked, scandalized, disgusted! i can't
