Marissa, my mom had a stroke and could not swallow. She choose not to get a feeding tube. She passed away in 14 days. Because she died on a Sunday, I found your channel and became a minimalist. Because of your channel I was able to let go of her things and mine and get over the grief of her passing. So Thanks.
I’m so sorry for your loss, I had several patients and families who chose the same and I know it must have been hard for you. ❤️ I’m glad you found me and sending hugs your way!
#16 brought back some hard memories for me. After being married for only two years at the age of 30, I took a cerebellum stroke and lost my ability to swallow. I was on a feeding tube for two months and had to take several swallowing tests before I was finally allowed to eat certain food. It took many more months before I was allowed to eat lettuce. I remember feeling so excited when I was finally told I could eat a salad with lots of dressing on it. I love how you showed compassion for the patients you worked with. Having kind people like you, helped me to handle hearing the fact that I had failed another swallowing test. My life changed after that and I saw the world differently. I saw more joy in the simple things. I’m so thankful to be here. My husband and I got through a terrible time. I’m 43 now and enjoying my life with my husband and 6 year old son. I want a simpler life so I can have more fun with my family. This video touched my heart. Thank you!
I completely cleared out my home over the new year period after watching your videos. My house is beautiful, streamlined and always clean. I feel at peace now ❤️
I would love to see a video on how you battle over-consumerism when you are surrounded by people who participate in it. I'm currently battling that now and being a hoarder in recovery I can definitely say it's hard.
When I look at old photos of myself as a child, I used to think about all the bad things others did to me and how little the younger me knew about what was going to happen. But this is the first time I think about how badly I've treated myself over the years and still do. Thank you.
One thing I recently discovered that has been hindering me on my journey toward a minimalist lifestyle is that my frugality gets in the way. I have been frugal most of my life and that makes it difficult in parting with things that aren't broken or parts I could use to make future repairs. This has saved me money over the years, but it has come with the mental cost from holding onto things. Decluttering has made me aware of my fault and now opening to idea of repurchasing items in the future if needed with an expectation that "freedom from possessions" should be worth the exercise.
I’m the same. I’ve already decluttered a lot with no problems, but now that we’re trying to be more frugal and watch our spending I’m finding it hard to part with things I know I’ll have to replace down the track. Even if it might be years before we need to replace it.
I watched this video soon after we got dark flooring installed all over our house except the hallway & kitchen 😮! But then, I decided to follow the other mistakes you mention like “focus on the now,” “don’t worry about what you can’t control,” 😅. I also decided to appreciate what I have and see goodness in what I have- dark floors tells me that there’s dust & dirt on the surface so, it’s a good thing knowing that I need to clean my environment 🙏
63 here, must admit that you have some really good points here. Stark white flooring is equally problematic. When the kids were small I actually got carpet that matched the outside dirt 😜. Good job, love the kid picture tip.
I was a clinical dietitian and worked with the SLP, I was the one who did the tube feedings. I always went into the room with the SLP so I could answer the patients and families questions. Having a team approach did make things a little easier. You did have a hard job but I'm sure you were very good at it. I am retired now.
Dear Marissa I am the patient on No. !6 of your list. If I want to have speech or physiotherapy I need to pay, it is not provided by public health, and so I don't because I don't have the money. I am 46 years old and I have a 10-year-old daughter. My every day is a struggle, more mentally than physically. So I think that this should be No1 on your list, "Don't take anything for granted". Thank you for showing this, I wish people get it.
You are incredible! You speak so gently and carefully with your words and inflections. You are extremely relatable, and I am so grateful that I have found you! You’re a true encouragement and tremendous help! I have purchased some of your courses and have benefited from every second of them! Thank you so much, Marissa!
It brought a tear to my eye listening to you describe having to tell a patient/family that they failed swallow test. You are such a kind person and I love your videos 💕
i love how vulnerable all your videos are... thank you for sharing such great life lessons and advice... im only a couple of years behind you but experienced burnout hard core two years ago and still trying to figure out what my future looks like... also and on a totally different note... as a fellow woman AND my professional opinion of being a hairstylist for 17 years... this length of your hair is PHENOMENAL for you!
😂 they do! Since they plan to stay there until they pass, they don’t see the point in changing them lol I got them a robot vacuum so it isn’t so much for them to take care of everyday which has helped. And, happy late birthday!
an advantage is that you see the dirt on them, so you see when they're clean too... we have white floors in bathrooms and the hallway, not too much traffic there either.
@@marcdc6809 We put in very light floors (regret). They show every speck, which means you would be cleaning every 2 minutes to keep them spotless. We were saved by getting a dog😂 He keeps the floors in the kitchen clear of every speck of carrot peel, bread crumb, etc
Number 19 is something I'm constantly dealing with. Thank you for your suggestion of putting up a photo of my younger self to remind me that I would NEVER speak to a child that way so why would I do it to myself?
Dear Marissa, I took an action. Actually, I took multiple actions today, and I feel absolutely fantastic - what a productive day, woo hoo; I am a big step closer to my goals since that! Thank you for your video - it's inspiring!!!
You are right about the dark floors, those crumbs cast shadows…. You made so many good points in this video, living in the past with regret and depression, or living in the future with anxiety instead of living in the present and enjoying the moment… great wisdom.
I worked on an Ear Nose &Throat ward as a nurse . It made me appreciate the sense of smell which we take for granted and that some people come in and find out they can never eat normally again . Things I took for granted before then .
I can really relate to this video. I went back for my Early Childhood and Special education degree at 40 (in 2021). It was hard work, but so worth it. It also helped me to slow down and figure out who and what was important in my life. Now that I am done (and waiting on an interview for a job), I am working on getting rid of stuff and organizing so I can focus on what I want/need to do. I still have additional work to do to complete my Special Ed. certification, but that will come with time. My main focus will be my health, simplifying my house (and hopefully job when I get it), and working on relationships that matter to me!
Marissa, I signed up for Mint Mobile just over a month ago when you suggested it. I can’t believe the savings and the coverage I get in my little rural town. Yesterday I signed up my stepdad and will be saving him money too. I probably wouldn’t have done it, had I not heard you mention it. So thanks!
Thank you for your previous work in helping people with swallowing problems. Before my late husband passed in 2019, he had suffered one or more strokes during multiple cardiac events in the hospital and was unable to swallow liquids for a while. Until then, I never knew that a SLP was responsible for something as critical as that. It was a big eye opener! ❤
Happy belated birthday! Wonderful advice! Dark floors, dark countertops, dark furnitures all have the same problem. They show crumbs, dirt, and scratches. I also like lighter wood colors and they go well together.
As someone who put in white counters and a super light floor in the kitchen, the opposite is also really difficult to deal with. I would choose mid-tone wood in future. And a speckled counter.
@@MyFocusVaries I like mid-tone wood the most. That’s what I meant when I said lighter wood color. They go well with different decorations and colors. As well as warm up any room. I currently have speckled countertop and don’t like it too much.
I'm watching for a second time because it was a suggested video after the previous one I watched and I just wanted to say I love this list of mistakes not to make! Especially about not living in the past or the future which is something I used to do a lot is an extremely depressed and anxious person. It was very hard to move past my childhood and all the trauma that I experienced but having a good person to help me with that made a huge difference in my life. In fact I may not even be here if it weren't for her.❤😊
Today's video is one of the BEST that I have ever watched ever since I started following you. Thank you for these reminders. It is so relateable and helpful for someone like me who is hungry for change and progress to improve life. THANK YOU 💚
Coming from a family of very large people. My biggest regret is that I did not do extreme weight loss when I was younger because now if I do a weight loss which I have feared out my skin looks like that of a shriveled prune. The doctor has said that at 70 .my skin will always look terrible. No elasticity.
I'm rooting for you! Extreme weight loss is stressful on the body, so if you are worried about the skin, slower and more consistent weight loss might be better ❤
I was madly writing notes throughout your video. Many of your thoughts and lessons are absolutely 💯 . I'm a big fan of your videos...... you are wise beyond your years!!!
For me the sound was much better after your microphone died. I listen via Bluetooth hearing device and your videos come mostly through my left ear. The right seems to be background music (?) Anyway I enjoyed the video. 😊
Thank you for your quality videos, Marissa! This was especially valuable. I donated my hair to Locks of Love last year to help make wigs for children. It felt wonderful to be able to do that. hugs!
You are so wonderful! The words you spoke in this video made me cry! You are so correct! Thank- you so very much! The best part of this video, is you gave me the self talk 😅to help me move on, and try even harder to be my best person that I can be today!
I completely agree with this dark floor thing. We had dark floors in our old place, and I vacuumed every single day, just to see all the crumbs and cat litter lying around again seconds later. Last year we moved to a new place which has light floors, and I don't feeel the urge to vacuum every day now and only clean up the spaces where cat litter and cat hair tends to accumulate.
Marissa, this video made me both laugh and cry. Dark floors, LOL, and SO TRUE! My eyes filled with tears when you talked about feeding tubes. Thank you for your channel and your content. It's truly a blessing.
Nice video, thanks for the advice! By the way, do you have any videos about the Diderot effect? It happens to me when I'm entering a new hobby, for example, I quickly get dragged by the Diderot effect. Some advice on how to avoid it would be great (if there is some way). Thanks and happy new year!!
I am an overthinker and chronic insomniac. I’ve been told many times to focus on my locus of control. It doesn’t help. Just because atrocities are happening that I can’t control doesn’t mean they aren’t happening. 💔
Wow! I just wanted to leave a comment because I‘ve been binging your videos since the moment I doiscovered your channel just under a week ago. The fun thing is: I just realized now that you‘re a speech-language-pathologist. That made me reflect on what I‘ve been doing this last week. Funny enough, I‘m close to graduating as a speech-language-pathologist myself (or to be exact: Logopädin, the german equivalent to that). And I‘ve been basically procrastinating on finishing an over 20 page stuttering report I have to submit on sunday. Instead I‘ve kept myself busy and distracted decluttering my home, telling myself I couldn‘t concentrate with all that stuff around me anyways. But then it somehow clicked and I realized that this increasing feeling of procrastination guilt lingering back there in my brain is clutter in itself, just mental clutter. So I just sat down and powered through it and I‘ve been able to finish the whole thing! Now I feel so much lighter, just like decluttering is supposed to feel! Now I can continue on my journey feeling so much better while doing it! I‘ve been able to declutter so much stuff already and I honestly love it, not only the results but also the process itself. Thank you so much for your videos, they are so motivating and inspiring! PS.: Your thoughts about dysphagia resonated with me so much. It just makes you so thankful and apprechiative of the abilitys and life quality you have rather than the things you surround yourself with. We as the people that bring those lifechanging good and bad news can feel in our patients how much that matters over any material things.
My sister in law just did light floors and she can’t get the stains out of them. They’re a month old and already stained! I would rather sweep and mop daily than be stuck with mud stains.
Aww we’re the same age! I love decluttering and organizing too. I’ve done my research, read multiple books, decluttered my own home but I can’t bring myself to start organizing professionally. 😬 I feel like I need a “push” just once then I’ll take off. 😥
@@AtoZenLife you’re a doll, I love watching all of your videos! I need a home (a little above average) to showcase my work. Otherwise I have name selected, insta account which is still under construction. I also need to get over the fear of judgement. I almost forgot I am a teacher too and it keeps me very preoccupied.
All of the cheese is always welcome!😊 lol especially in the world we live in where its less common for ppl to be real and true online, so the raw, and honesty that you bring is very much appreciated and amazing 😊💚👍
I loved these tips! And thanks so much for sharing from your heart. The tip about not taking things for granted was such a great reminder & so very touching, as was the last tip about life being a journey. ❤
We have pale speckled tiles on our kitchen floor and even when it's clean it looks dirty and it shows EVERY little bit of dirt so I wouldn't recommend that flooring either
Thank you so much, so helpfull and so empowering. This is one video I should look at from time to time just to check how I am doing with my life. So inspiring 🧡🧡🧡
Thank you so much for that video. Tbh, I need to be reminded from time to time to think of all those things as things that aren't helpful for me, but instead choose to stop my real life just out of fear for the change, for what I need to do and for failing. So, to hear you say all the things I do know, but always ignore... helps me so much, 'cause it reminds me of the reasons why I should beginn to act instead of staying still. So, thank you so much! You don't even know how much this helps me. Have a wonderful 2024 and stay as wonderful as you are!
17:29 Thanks, I have never put this idea into words. I am a lazy person but I still manage to do a lot of stuff to avoid future pain but most people around me think i'm opposite of lazy and expect to me to do stuff around the house or job
Number seven is my big big problem. I’m gonna try to work on that this year and I cannot do it overnight just a little bit each year. I am hoping to get my spending down and enjoying my life more.
I am so glad that I found your channel. I really enjoy your videos. I've started taking notes to go back to all of the great wisdom you are providing. I'm also in the Chicago suburbs and I hope you will share more about your life in the Chicago area including free fun things to do.
Hi Marissa, I follow you since las year and I really love your videos and your approach with decluttering subjects that you share with us. You inspire me to improve my daily life and to add efficient techniques for live a better life. I have a question for you: It’s possible to talk about some recommended saving, investment applications or web sites, please? Thanks and have a nice winter week! Trudy
When you don’t see the dirt on your floor, it doesn’t mean it disappeared. It’s better to see it so that you can clean it and when your home is clean you can enjoy your time in it.
Ouch, having that toothache reference while I'm sitting here with an infection and might lose the tooth (root canal failed) because I was too stubborn to get it checked out sooner. A lot of what you say resonates with me, but this was uncanny 😅
Thanks for a wonderful, wonderful video. I do agree with you a lot. I have made a lot of changes over a lot of years little changes and has made a big change on my overall life and our financial life. Just by doing small steps that took years to do but now we’re at another end and it’s getting easier and also building good habits is anotherbig thing. I really enjoyed your video. I joined your channel. You were very straightforward and I loved how your video turned out. Thanks so much for sharing some great tips.
4:08 atomic habits by james clear touches on this. he literally shows a chart in the book about how 1% of effort daily can improve what you’re doing by an increase of 37% annually on average, but no effort at all literally does NOTHING for you
I would love a video on following trends/bandwagon, I don’t have that issue but I know you would find things to say about it that would be really enlightening xx
I never realized how much our beige-y carpet camouflaged all the dog hair until we put in LVP flooring. It's a medium tone, but the biggest shedder in the house is all white! 😂 My robo vac, "Dirty Hairy" gets quit the workout!
I chuckled when you said never install dark floors because I had just been thinking how much I wish you could have your natural light and gorgeous floors of your Germany home with you in your new city. And laughing at myself how you were talking about something else entirely and I was thinking about your Germany apartment floors. And then you brought up floors!

Marissa, this video made me both laugh and cry. Dark floors, LOL, and SO TRUE! My eyes filled with tears when you talked about feeding tubes. Thank you for your channel and your content. It's truly a blessing.
Yes please to the craze video!
I don’t have any videos specifically on that, but I will keep that in mind for future videos! 👏
Happy Birthday! Thank you for everything!
What an uplifting video, thank you. Lots of food for thought (and action).
I am an overthinker and chronic insomniac. I’ve been told many times to focus on my locus of control. It doesn’t help. Just because atrocities are happening that I can’t control doesn’t mean they aren’t happening. 💔
Yes do video on the Stanley cup farce. It absolutely reminds me of the Beannie thing. I never understood this concept.
Here just to say thank u. U're amazing. I 've got 2 sons too and your channel helps me a lot❤
This was so good Marissa. Thank you.
Great video…and so true! I worked as a home health RN and was very humbled..life changing lessons!
My sister in law just did light floors and she can’t get the stains out of them. They’re a month old and already stained! I would rather sweep and mop daily than be stuck with mud stains.
😢 That’s such a bummer!
@@AtoZenLife yeah. I was like “wow”. She has dogs and that’s a big factor but it just let me know to be careful with light floors.
Hi Marissa, I think you are wise beyond your years. Keep up the good work! 👏👍❤
Thanks so much for watching, Dawn 🫶
Aww we’re the same age! I love decluttering and organizing too. I’ve done my research, read multiple books, decluttered my own home but I can’t bring myself to start organizing professionally. 😬 I feel like I need a “push” just once then I’ll take off. 😥
What is that push going to be? Give yourself a deadline and then GO FOR IT! 👏
I was needing this today. Thank you.
Thanks for watching and cheers to you, Vickie ❤️
All of the cheese is always welcome!😊 lol especially in the world we live in where its less common for ppl to be real and true online, so the raw, and honesty that you bring is very much appreciated and amazing 😊💚👍
Thanks Marissa these are very informative, enjoy your channel❤❤
Thank you, Marisa!
Great video as usual, so many things to remember and incorporate
I remember the cabbage patch dolls - I was older and thought they were ugly. Great video 😊 lots of great information to ponder and apply
“Focus of your Locus” was very helpful
Thank you so much, so helpfull and so empowering. This is one video I should look at from time to time just to check how I am doing with my life. So inspiring 🧡🧡🧡
OMG ! "young you" is just the cutest thing !
Aw, thank you 🤗
You are so right about the dark floors
Also, the Cabbage Patch Kids frenzy in 1985. It was madness!
Thanks so much and wishing you all the best in 2024! ❤️
@@AtoZenLife Thank you!
This video is very eye opening. I’m going to start using these ideas. Thank you for sharing
Such good encouragement.
This video was great I really needed to hear some of it. Thank you.❤❤❤
17:29 Thanks, I have never put this idea into words. I am a lazy person but I still manage to do a lot of stuff to avoid future pain but most people around me think i'm opposite of lazy and expect to me to do stuff around the house or job
What a great video! I learned so much from it, thank you 😀
Number seven is my big big problem. I’m gonna try to work on that this year and I cannot do it overnight just a little bit each year. I am hoping to get my spending down and enjoying my life more.
I appreciate your message!
I am so glad that I found your channel. I really enjoy your videos. I've started taking notes to go back to all of the great wisdom you are providing. I'm also in the Chicago suburbs and I hope you will share more about your life in the Chicago area including free fun things to do.
Thank you so much for all of your videos, but this one especially!
Just signed up the whole family for Mint using your link. Thank you for the recommendation and for all of your amazing advice.
Woohoo, enjoy the savings! 🌱 💰
Hi Marissa,
I follow you since las year and I really love your videos and your approach with decluttering subjects that you share with us.
You inspire me to improve my daily life and to add efficient techniques for live a better life.
I have a question for you:
It’s possible to talk about some recommended saving, investment applications or web sites, please?
Thanks and have a nice winter week!
Trudy
When you don’t see the dirt on your floor, it doesn’t mean it disappeared. It’s better to see it so that you can clean it and when your home is clean you can enjoy your time in it.
I’d rather be less aware of it 😅
Ouch, having that toothache reference while I'm sitting here with an infection and might lose the tooth (root canal failed) because I was too stubborn to get it checked out sooner.
A lot of what you say resonates with me, but this was uncanny 😅
Thank you for sharing. This is an excellent reminder of how to have a content and fulfilling life.
Yeah the people pleaser in me is regretting a yes on a commitment but I also have a can’t quit attitude so good thing the commitment has an end date!
As always, love your vids ❤
So right! Thank you! Loveley regards from Vienna/Austria
Cheers from Chicago 👋
I just started listening to Atomic Habits so #2 was a revelation to me when I heard it in that!
That’s a great book for sure 🌟
Thank u
4:08 atomic habits by james clear touches on this. he literally shows a chart in the book about how 1% of effort daily can improve what you’re doing by an increase of 37% annually on average, but no effort at all literally does NOTHING for you
I would love a video on following trends/bandwagon, I don’t have that issue but I know you would find things to say about it that would be really enlightening xx
You are wise beyond your years
Wonderfully done
Agree with the floors, ours are black and they are hopeless! Never look clean.
Great video!!! I wish you a fabulous 2024!
This is my favorite video so far! Very educational and beneficial. Thank you 😊
Wise words.
You are amazing and so inspiring, thank you for your content❤
I never realized how much our beige-y carpet camouflaged all the dog hair until we put in LVP flooring. It's a medium tone, but the biggest shedder in the house is all white! 😂 My robo vac, "Dirty Hairy" gets quit the workout!
I loooove the vacuum’s name 😩. That’s almost like an ignorance is bliss moment with the dog hair, right? 😅
I chuckled when you said never install dark floors because I had just been thinking how much I wish you could have your natural light and gorgeous floors of your Germany home with you in your new city. And laughing at myself how you were talking about something else entirely and I was thinking about your Germany apartment floors. And then you brought up floors!
