Same with the Quattro S1 E2, people think these cars are great because they like them, not because they were any good unfortunately.
@Metal Morphine rotary cars aren't banned, even the 787 raced after it won Le Mans. It's just that the rules made them uncompetitive. That tends to happen very often in all branches of motorsports, after a car or engine that is unconventional and wins, the rules get tweaked to get everyone in line.
To be honest, the 787 didn't even win because it was the fastest, which it wasn't by far, it won by being the most reliable car that year 😂

@@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo still impressive because aside from causing non-piston combustion engines to be banned from LeMans, they paved the way for Japanese companies to grow into dominant forces (well ok, maybe just Toyota)

I wonder if Valentino initiated talks with Mazda to be able to drive this priceless beauty and Mazda just obliged since you know, it's Valentino, or if there was more to it than that.
He is one of those guys that with a little bit of experience could have easily changed over to driving race cars. The times he tested a Ferrari F1 car, his times weren't far off from what was considered competitive at that time.

The fact he wanted to drive the 787B is so awesome. Coming from a world class bike racer, I'm sure he was still just thrilled to pilot that that car. The Doc, and a 4 rotor. Ohhh yes! While it's time racing was short lived, it's still one of the most iconic cars around.

The most iconic Le Mans car would have to be something that was actually dominant. Best qualifying was over 12 seconds off pace. Only 1 podium, let alone win. Had to run detuned in order to not blow itself up (which is how a 767 beat two 787s in 1990). It was a lucky win by not breaking down with the other cars finishing 6th and 8th behind competition that had engine problems even. It's a cool car but better described as a 1-hit-wonder than an icon.

Maybe not getting on the years like so many others, I guess. I have been a Rossi fan for a long time now, and only found out yesterday about his history with rally and F1. Take it however you like.

I understand wanting to be careful with the car, but I agree. An XJR-9 ran an actual hill climb time in the 41-second range, and it would’ve been fun to see how this compares

It's an exhibition drive. They probably told him to be careful with the car at the start, for whichever reason. If we wanted to see full attack, they would have hired somebody other than Valentino, good as he is, to shoe the car.
Even a guy like Rossi knows that you can't underestimate a beast like that for the first time (he didn't test ran the car before) Especially running in such narrow turns and short straights.

Even if they were unbanned I doubt we'd ever see a Wankel at le mans again, way too inefficient.
@@jacobfoster6773 The 787B was woefully off the pace back in 1991 too and only won because the front-runners retired all three in succession and because 1991 had a great shortage of the new regulation cars so old cars could be entered with some lax rules following them. It was a fluke by all accounts. Also, all other engine configurations were banned from 1992 so it hardly just affected the Wankel engined Mazda - which it must be stressed never won another race in the 1991 WSC season and had a 5th place finish at best. Tons of myths surround this car and it seems OP is one of those who both believes and spreads it.

Thumbs up for Rossi, big thumbs down for the horrible sounding Mazda. Why people think this sounds good compared to any IC engine above 4 cylinders beats me. It's just a very loud noise, not a nice noise.
