    Dr. Brad is one of the finest minds in the history of exercise science and has written half of the research articles you quote. When he says there are no must do exercises he is talking in the context of hypertrophy and the fact that exercise selection is not one of the keys to hypertrophy. The drivers being, mechanical tension, metabolite build up, progressive overload etc... Of all the people to pick on for this section when you have the bcaa brigade and the crazy exercise gang seems crazy to me.

    Interesting that you brought up - Brad Schoenfeld. Just let me add, Brad wrote the book - "Sculpting her body perfect" way back in the 80s. I remembered being obsessed with this book from my school library in the late 90s, and I eventually ordered it for myself, it was my 1st ever inspiration towards lifting weights, it was my holy bible. And it was specially designed for women with out sugar coating it. What inspired me the most about this book was the fact it was so detailed. Brad made effort into illustrating EVERY single exercise for each muscle group, one chapter was a full on several pages on just chest, next delts and so on illustrating difficult angles for each muscle group. He also dedicated several pages for some of the icons of the 80s and 90s fitness models and bodybuilders, the likes of Karen Hulse and Debbie Kruck. Karen Hulse was a woman working 6 days a week juggling family and full time job, Debbie Kruck overweight as a teen turning herself into one of the popular female bodybuilders in the 80', that alone was very important info for me as I felt anyone from different levels could do it. I learned a lot from that book.
    However that was the old edition which is harder to find nowadays, however today I've seen the modern addition of the same book, and it's lost its magic, doesn't feature some great athletes anymore. So I think unfortunately Brad has gone totally commercial and "normal" to target some people who want to get into shape but doesn't want the extreme that comes with it.

    I liked this video but think you're wrong on Brad's point. He just said that there are no exercises or single program you must do, not that all possible workouts are good ones. For example, his statement said nothing about someone doing 10 pound dumbbell curls as a total workout. Just that you can decide what you want to do and, if that doesn't involve deadlifts, squats or bench press but instead involves lunges push-ups and other exercises, then you can build your own workout. So, it's not that anything goes, just that there is not just one path.

    • @ScottHermanFitness
      @ScottHermanFitness  5 років тому +3

      Glad you liked the video! I see what you mean, but a statement like that needs more explanation and shouldn't be open to so much interpretation. That statement was a TWEET he then re posted on IG. There are certainly must do exercises and when people start training they DO need guidance to maximize their gains. Let's hope you are right

    • @idratherbeoutdoors3085
      @idratherbeoutdoors3085 4 роки тому +4

      @@ScottHermanFitness Eh... your statement here requires just as much clarification, which I guess you do provide with "to maximize your gains." But then, it's not fair to criticize a bulwark of great information, studies, etc., in the bodybuilding/weightlifting field as Brad, while assuming that everyone must "maximize their gains." -- There are many BS'ers out there with clearly incorrect, misleading crap in their message. Go after them. That's what we need!

    • @soob9178
      @soob9178 4 роки тому +3

      @@ScottHermanFitness There are great exercises, but there aren't MUST DO exercises and it also depends on your goals. If you powerlift obviously you have to squat bench deadlift. If your goal is general strength and hypertrophy there are many substitutes and variations of the classic compound movements. Some people may not enjoy doing certain lifts or certain exercises put them at a very high risk of injury. Lunges, Leg Press, leg curls, glute ham raises, split squats, etc are perfectly good exercises and you will build great legs from these. Squats and deadlifts are great too but aren't the only way. Nobody bashing on compounds but to act like it's the only way and is the 100% most optimal way to train for all people is false.

They do a variety of exercises which don't really make sense, but since they look good at a low body fat people take them seriously. I don't get what Scott was saying. I agree with Brad Shoenfeld. And I think Scott does too - he made an example of a bench press and immediately went into naming dozens of variations - with dumbbells, incline and so on. That is what Brad is talking about - you don't have to do barbell bench presses if you don't want to and you are not a powerlifter. There are dozens of exercises, including calisthenics, that can be substituted.
      Scott is imagining a truly ridiculous kind of dufus who would take that message as meaning that you don't need to do any pushing exercises if you want to get a bigger chest or something like that. Scott talks about somebody overweight just going to the gym and doing easy curls hoping for results. Well, that kind of person will not do any program correctly.
      Scott is really punching air here.

    I have to disagree on the last one. I did chest presses for 3 weeks with no results, but after i switched to chest dips i noticed growth, felt burning in my chest while performing and able progress quite rapidly (doing 35kilos weighted for reps atm) over a period of 2 months. I have to admit i might didnt do chest press with a proper form, but i also was a beginner and eager to get gains. I think Dr.Schoenfeld's point is fitness training is very individual training and you should organize it for your needs and preferences.
    Main lifts are great, but aren't a necessity for growth. Look on calisthenics people/gymnasts and etc.
    Also great show, cant wait to see new episodes.

      Glad you like the video! And yeah. My main point with my last point was that the statement is way too broad and 99% of people who read it will take it for face value. Great start to a series. The sad fact is many of these people are just satisfying a demand - the majority of people who want quick and easy body transformations and exercise routines. Just like people would rather take a pill to address medical symptoms rather than address the root causes of their problems.
    It is not easy to be consistent in training, patient in gaining results, and determined to change your diet and lifestyle and make time to exercise. These Instagram accounts are filling the need of the “quick and lazy”. I agree they do more harm than good and most people don’t realize this but unfortunately like illegal drug use - wherever there is demand there will be supply.

However, if someone has an injury and can’t squat, they can create a similar stimulus through other exercises. Don’t take it out of context. I’m glad you gave him a shoutout though.
