    Yay, new postbag. Really missed that series. Always brings back good memories from 2016/2017 when I first discovered your channel.

    The inductor would be part of a boost circuit to generate enough voltage to power the chip from a nearly dead 1.5V cell.

      Yes, that's the conclusion I came to. In fact the LCD works down to 0.45V

    Hello Julian 9:10, the gate of the right hand "mosfet" is isolated. The 2 outer pins are NOT connected, as you described.

    • @JulianIlett
      @JulianIlett  Рік тому +1

      Yes, you're right. Both devices on the heatsink have the same number - they're both MOSFETs. I'm thinking this might be a synchronous buck converter.

  • @Tech-Relief
    @Tech-Relief Рік тому +2

    Yes as some others already noted, since the device has to be powered from near exhausted low voltage cells obviously the inductor must be part of a boost circuit to power it.

  • @followthetrawler
    @followthetrawler Рік тому +5

    Pretty sure that was a MOSFET not a diode - I dont think two pins were connected - looked like the left one had a keep out. Might be wrong.
    Like the 18650 tester.

    • @JulianIlett

      You're right - both devices are MOSFETs. Synchronous buck converter I think.

    the BT168 Analog puts a load on the batteries (I have that one). I don't know about the digital one but open circuit voltage on an alkaline battery doesn't tell you much. It would need to put a load in order to make it useful.

    Only this week I acquired a Ronco Battery Tester from a local charity shop!
    I'm assuming it uses a motor or Galvanometer for the battery power display, as there are no batteries.
    I never knew they existed until this week ha

    The volt meter will do higher voltages, one thing you failed to notice/mention is the 9v test points on the ends of the units.

      yeah, i'd probably hook up there too, if it reads a 4ish volt OK

      There's two versions of the digital one, the BT-168D (aka BT-168 Pro) will do lithium, the BT-168 won't (apparently). I've never checked what the 9v range goes down to, should be able to test a LiPo on that.

  • @sparkyprojects
    @sparkyprojects Рік тому +2

    I hope you realize there's a tester that can do up to 8S battery packs, search for
    "Lipo Battery Low Voltage Buzzer Alarm Indicator Monitor Checker Tester"
    Single display, it shows the overall voltage, then steps through each cell
    The inductor in yours is probably a boost converter to power the display

    The analog BT-168 has load resistors to check battery voltages under some load, but the digital versions (BT-168D or higher model BT-168 Pro, which can test Lithium batteries) apparently do not have these load resistors as they indicate voltage similar to multimeter.

  • @aedwards123
    @aedwards123 Рік тому

    That analogue battery tester design has been around for at least 30 years unchanged 😊. I still have the one I bought from (probably) B&Q just after I moved into my first flat in 1992.

    I agree, I think battery testers are better at telling when a battery is flat if they put a little load on them when testing them, like the old ones do(Not on purpose, they use current to deflect the needle). The deliverable current nosedives at the end of a AA battery's useful life, and I don't think that is as apparent if you don't put a load on them.

    It was showing 9 volt batteries on the advertisement on your computer. So I don't see why you couldn't test lithium batteries because I'm sure it has a wide voltage range. Probably from 0.01 all the way up to probably around 11 or 12 volts on the battery tester.

    • @JulianIlett
      @JulianIlett  Рік тому +1

      It's interesting. The 9V input powers the circuit through a linear regulator. The 1.5V input appears to drive a boost converter - it works down to 0.45V (below that the LCD flickers and shows 0.00V).

    Hi, What was the conclusion on the battery tester loading? If it's just powering the on board switching regulator then you might expect the load to reduce when the cell voltage is higher.
