    Growing up with parent's who lived through the Great Depression we didn't waste anything. If bread was moldy you removed the moldy part and still ate it.

    I’m so glad you brought this topic up! I have an old stump that I call “The Giving Tree” and leave gifts for the band of crows that stay in our area. I even have a special call that I do when I put something out for them. They always show up! I like them to patrol my property and haven’t lost a bird to a hawk.. which we have quite a few hawks around..since I made friends with the crows. I have Australorps as well. Both methods have helped immensely!

    I have a pair of crows. They are with us for at least 20 years and have brought up many young. The are fed fell and defend their territory together with their offspring. Never lost a chicken to a bird of prey in all that time. The crows will try to take chicks, so I keep them safe with their mothers until they are the size of a quail.

    Crows are awesome birds. Many years ago we had a cat that was diabetic and had to get shots twice a day. The cat loved to be outside during the day. When we would call for him in early evening to come in(time for his shot), if he didn't come the crows would start squawking around the evergreen tree that he was asleep under. We found him easily every time! Now that we are out of the city and on a homestead, I will feed the crows I hear all around us. It will be good to get them ready for when we get our chickens into a tractor on steroids!

    Another way I have found to cut down on feed costs for the pigs and chickens - I give some of my ‘willing to help’ neighbors 5 gallon buckets with lids. I write on the outside what foods they can put in. They love that they are not throwing food away. One of my neighbors kids even bring THEIR scraps to their parents buckets! I go pick up the buckets on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

In fact a salad I just cut up fresh for my in-laws on Monday, they’re ready to throw away on Thursday 😭. I would’ve eaten that salad- if there’s brown pieces, I just pull those out.

    Thank you for great content! Our tiny flock is suburbanized, but we are slowly working in some of your methods. Ours are all girls under a year old, but we do see how when they get more fresh forage they eat less from their feeder. Over the winter, we've been sprouting microgreens (not any special or fancy blend - just a bunch of cover crop seeds) and the girls tear through it with glee. We also give them kitchen scraps and the occasionally stale bit of muffins or bread. As soon as the weather warms enough, we'll be leaving some of the dirty bedding from their coop (as well as any leftovers not directly chicken-suitable) in a container with a cockeyed lid to start another BSFL bin. It worked well last year and if the bin is close to the chickens, they're likely to grab a few of the adult Black Soldier Flies that tend to hang around the bin.

    Great video Billy. Any method to reduce the risk of a Hawk stealing our chickens while they free range can be very beneficial. The green color of the Australorp rooster feathers are similar to a Crow, and helps reduce the Hawk factor. I've had Australorps in my flocks for many years, I've learned they don't fly like other breeds will and they sure taste good.

    ive had the same family of crows around forever. great to have around, except when ya go huntin. they let every thing know where your at. i feed the birds and i always have a couple of blackbird familys hang around instead of going the full route to canada. if theres a hawk, they are on them.

    • @jackjohnson291
      @jackjohnson291 Рік тому

      On the hunting front, that goes two ways. They’ll let you know when something is moving in as well, especially a predator but deer and turkey as well. I have to run multiple feed cycles on my feeders to keep the crows from getting it all during the day and still have something on the ground when the deer show up. Running the feeders at night is one way around it, but I don’t want them only showing up after/before shooting hours (not that I hunt over feeders or anywhere near them).
      Squirrels will do the same, but in both cases - squirrels and crows - I find they aren’t scaring anything off that I’m after at all. They might make something pause for a moment and look/smell around, but that’s about it, if anything at all. If you learn their languages, I find they’re far more of a benefit than detriment. I hear people complaining about squawking squirrels while deer hunting all the time, but I think most haven’t ever worked through the annoyance to realize the benefits of having them around (aside from eating them, of course).

      I left that particular rat race in 2014. We looked at Tennessee, but decided on Texas. We were in the Coachella Valley, and my Wife said that she wasn't going to trade one desert for another. Also she grew up in Minnesota so no states with harsh winters, but she did want four "real seasons", and we have that. We're an hour southeast of Dallas close to a large lake. Best of all we found an old homestead on seven acres with a pond that was bank owned and had been empty for four years, we bought it all for $80,000.
      We raise chickens for eggs and meat, dairy goats for milk, cheese and soap. We grow most of our vegetables and in the last two years we've raised our own beef and pork.
      I wish you all the luck in the world! And you won't believe the relief and peace of mind once you leave CA and return to America.

    Hi Billy. What rice knife do you have? Been looking into them and too many bad reviews along with too many knives. Advice would be appreciated. One of those would be a nice addition to my toolkit. Thanks.
