Did y'all notice that trees were uprooted and heavy objects blown through the air, bur the roof stayed on the house. I want to know who his roofer is.
I think the fact that it was a hipped roof helped- there wasn't a lip at the peak for the wind to hook under. Impressive.
When construction in a area where tornados, they tie the roof down it helps big time.
😆🤔👏👏👏
The angle of the roof and how it is positioned us what matters. The high steeples blunt some of the wind and not let it slip under the room where it starts pulling the roof up and off. Aerodynamic roof design. Still going to lose shingles and potentially end up with holes from debris
@@davehowe7332 maybe up to an F2. But after that the wind is strong enough to pull the roof off the anchor bolts. I've built roofs. Ever that weird creepy wood bending sound when a Tornado hits a house? That's the sound of the roof pulling everything up.
Even scarier is we use huge bolts. The idea that the wind could pull such bolts out is scary
Only the very top of my phone was sticking out of the vent in our shelter when I shot this video. I could feel the hose reel hit the camera when it flew by!
Great job! I’m so glad y’all got to shelter and were safe through it.
This one scared the hell out of me since I was at work in California when it hit, my manager took me to the back and told me I needed to go home and call my family. Thank god they were all ok, but sometimes surviving it can be easier than picking up the pieces afterward.
Chris Mance awesome experience !!!!.
Mother nature is so amazing !!!
Chris Mance Great to see good video.
Glad you are ok!
+Chris Mance Dude this is freaking amazing! You did the best thing you could while filming this, and the footage is incredible.
As normanite, I remember this tornado. Excellent footage!
As a child growing up in Oklahoma, the first words you learn are...."TORNADO ON THE GROUND!"
Kansas also.
Parts of Texas, too! But y’all get all the DOOZIES!! Bless y’alls hearts!❤️

Hands down that was the most wicked tornado video I've ever seen. Thanks!
Say hi to Omni for me. :)
Gotta love the morons in this thread arguing about the opinion saying that it's the most wicked tornado video *SHE'S* SEEN. Reading comprehension 101, morons.
@Captain Cleve Sparrow Yup you’re right! The guy lost his wife and home in that Tornado 🌪 on some site I read.
@@Yah-Izoa-Hakaboth Yes he did and his wife's death was at least partially his fault. Instead of being responsible and getting to a safe spot he left her and went upstairs to film a monster EF4 twister as it barreled right over their house. It's an amazing video but also the premier example of what NOT to do in that situation. His excuse was that he thought it was going to miss their house, even as it became obvious it was coming right at him. I guarantee he wishes he had that decision to make over again.
@@cwizzy13 No doubt. Seeing it from his point of view is what makes this one so intense. As it gets closer, you can see how wide it is and see it twist and coil.. holy shit. some intense footage.
That house took a direct hit like a champ! Impressed.
Those winds were not that strong. There wasn't much damage to the house, just the vegetation. Every house should stand up to those winds, however mobile homes, manufactured homes & trailers probably would not.
@Ozone I don't think this is an EF0. probably a normal ef1. trees snapping indicates EF2 but those were not particularly thick
@Ozone on many homes for sure! are you certain this was the EF0 and not the EF1 of the two tornadoes which occured in norman?
Doesn't look like a direct hit. How can you tell? Looks to me like the tornado passed in front of that house, but not over it. The wind on the trees behind it was not as strong.
This was the EF1 in NW Norman. Also, if you watch closely you can see the hose reel pass counterclockwise, then reverse and hit my phone clockwise.
Nice video. Just the essentials; tornado, damage, noise, wind and no screaming.
No screaming means no Reed Timmer.
Most importantly...No pointless music!
CaptKundalini I like Reed, it's excellent video *when you're in the mood for adrenalin by proxy* 👍😆
LOL...
@@CaptKundalini lol
My mother grew up in western Missouri on a farm near the Kansas border in the 1920's and 30's. She talked about how the family would huddle in the storm cellar during thunderstorms. Those were the days before adequate warning systems about tornados. So anytime the weather got threatening, the family would go to the cellar.
Yes, and you learned how to feel if the weather was tornado weather, too. I was taught that by my mom who was born 1930.
@@stardanya2114 how do you feel it?
This feels like we're all in the shelter with you 🥺😟
If I was there I will be like"OK I'm died.😅 he or she:🚹🏠🌪
Oh! Shut UP!
Unlike the numerous microbursts that amateurs have been passing off as tornados(even if a tornado was nearby)This is a prime example of a Tornado! Great video. Hope your house didn't have too much damage. Great shots of the rapid wind direction changes as the storm passed through the area.
I wasn't even there and I felt that hose reel😂
-great footage tho
Alexis...that was no hose reel...that was an old time hand pushed lawn mower...blades exposed ! look them up and see what they all looked like.
It was a plastic hose reel. I kept it next to the shelter for a long time after that!
Amazing footage. I’m glad you were safe.
Glad to know everyone was safe in this. That is incredible video and a great video to show others why it’s important to take shelter and not be impaled with objects.
Now THAT was an actual direct hit. Amazing footage! This is the only video I've ever seen from literally inside the vortex. You can actually see each wall of the vortex moving towards and over the camera view, with the condensation in the vortex walls clearly visible. Although it was only around F1 strength in this footage, the view of the dynamics would have been completely obstructed, had it been any stronger, as the condensation cloud would have been much thicker and the ambient lighting a lot darker.
It was a direct hit from an F1! I really lucked out being in the exact center of the vortex.
@@chrismance5638 You lucked out that it didn't take your home and your little dog Toto away with it, too!
Wow… it looked like an EF2 at least… but if it was an EF1, it speaks volumes as to why tornados are so dangerous… that was crazy footage (and mesmerizing at the same time)… kudos to the person who shot it :)
@@BangBangBeefyMacNCheesy *F0
Omg! You clearly could see the wind swirling in different directions, so scary! Glad you guys are safe. Awesome capture of how terrible these tornadoes are.
Wow great video! And done from the correct place... in safety, in your shelter!
I remember this me and my grandmother watched this a few years ago but sadly she past away 😭
Oh that’s tough, I hope you’re okay
Sux. Mine too.
I’m a trained Weather Spotter, but tell you what; I don’t ever want to be this close!! The big difference between me and other chasers is that I don’t take chances. Life is too precious!!
well then u dont report accurat weather do u?
Not everyone has the inter-testicular fortitude for it. Nothing wrong with that.
That was the best video of a tornado I have seen yet and it took this long to view it. Great jod
This tornado took my stepdad and mom’s home! But they’ve long since rebuilt! Thanks for sharing!! Intense!
That looks quite frightening.
Isn’t it incredible what even a very weak tornado can do? Nice video
Woman is 02838492928x weaker than a tornado
@@Astrophotographer9 huh? What do you mean?
Best tornadic activity videa I’ve ever seen
Someone told me that they don’t build houses with basements in Oklahoma! If true, that’s insanity! Can someone help me out here??
Clay. Clay doesn't drain. Dig a basement in clay and it will simply be pushed up out of the ground by groundwater. Oklahoma is a whole bunch of clay. That is why the dirt is red. That is why it is crazy expensive/often not possible to do basements. That is why there are concrete canals all over the place instead of buried stormwater pipes.
A tornado video that isn't 2 hours 37 minutes and 54 seconds long of some rain and lightning and the actual tornado being at the 1 hour 12 minute and 38 second mark and all their angle gets is a branch falling off a dead tree? You're telling me that someone actually knows when to start recording or how to cut out the garbage parts of the video?
Good stuff right here.
What’s the home builders name?
Incredible footage! Thanks for the upload!
I have respect for the people that live in Oklahoma . You guys get huge tornados . I’ve only been to Oklahoma once and that was for the wind star casino resort
Totally terrifying to go through something like this. I can not begin to imagine what that must be like. Especially if you have small kids in your house. Terrifying enough for a adult to go through, can’t begin to imagine the trauma impact something like this would do to small kids.
Awesome footage. Glad you guys are safe.
What kind of shelter do you have? Do most people down there have them?
This was from an in-ground shelter in my garage. Many homes in Oklahoma have shelters, but not all. I would guess maybe 25% have shelters.
Even though a small part of that house has a gable end roof, it shows why a hip roof house is much better at survivability, deflecting a huge volume of wind!
@Ozone It's a well built house taking multi-directional winds, a barn would of been destroyed! Those blowing tree trunks can cause massive damage to structures, let alone through a window! NO, don't think it's no big deal....
Now that is what I call up close and personal. Great video.
Wow simply amazing! Damn! hardly ever so I get a view like this! Thank u for the upload. Plz stay safe.
Inflow and outflow within a few seconds of eachother. The front side of the rotation bends trees to breaking point in one direction, and the back side of the rotation snaps them off in the other direction.
A playback between 7seconds and 15 seconds, you can spot it as it goes straight over the neighbor's house straight to the camera owner's house. For and aft winds really sling that tree around.
I am curious about that shelter. How could they see out? Was it an in floor thing and they just didn't shut the hatch?
Wow! That crap was creepy as heck. Thanks for sharing. Goodness gracious.
If that was a F4 or F5 this wasn't a direct hit. How do I know? The house across the street is still there.
EF1
I'm glad that house was not destroyed
0:12 what was that noise it kinda sounded like the phone got hit with something
I believe the noise at 0:12 was the pressure wave
I hope all of you made it out ok. I also hope all your homes were able thank to be saved. I have to say this was the best video of a tornado I have ever seen. You could see the walls of it and how it was turning and I was so scared when stuff came flying into your face. I hope you didn't get hurt from it. And thank you for sharing this video. I don't think I would have had the balls to be recording a tornado never mind during one. SO you get a ball of steal trophy.
How did you film it from inside a shelter? I thought they were underground and/or away from windows or open spaces?
I thankfully don't live in tornado alley, or anywhere where tornadoes are common.
In-floor garage shelter. Open enough to stick cell phone enough to get camera at ground level.
@@Og-Judy Oh that makes sense, thank you!
Exactly right! That’s how I filmed it.
Was that a remote camera? I sure hope so considering that object that looked like a spool came rocketing into it at about 60 or 70mph...was this an ef1 or 2?
After watching it again I am guessing solid ef2 given flying debris at 0:16...
What was the rating on the tornado? Looks like EF-1, EF-2 damage.
I watched videos of tornadoes destroying houses from a distance, but this was far more frightening. My father claims he saw a video where the "eye" of the tornado passed over people in a shelter and I wonder if this is what he meant.
Was this an EF1?
Tornado: I'm coming for you.
House: That's what you think.
cyoungrun1 An f0 or f1 is not taking out concrete block
Now this is what i call a tornado encounter video. Great catch
And this was only a small tornado. Imagine a mile-wide F5. 😬
Mile wide? Excuse me ?
@@Saifull1991 Yeah plenty of videos here on YT showing them. This one is the biggest ever at 2.6 mile wide 😱: ua-cam.com/video/KX8o2loAMhY/v-deo.html
@@Saifull1991 lol mile try almost 3 miles wide el reno was 2.6 miles wide moved 50 mph was only a f3 tho only because it stayed over open field most time amd wasnt major damage but if did go thru rural areas def would been one for century and easily a f5
you have bulletproof glass in the shelter?
That was incredible footage !!!
amazing video from my friend Chris !
No one realy has anything nice to say when you comment. So all I can say is great video.
I just wish he would have went out and filmed the shelter from the outside.
Must have been on the outside edge of it since that house is still standing
What street was this at in norman
Buckingham Drive in Castlerock
Just seen this clip and Chris Mance on the Weather Channel. Nice work
When I was 8 yrs old, had an F3 hit at night south of Houston, It was the loudest 5 minutes of my life. It sucked the barn up completely and dropped it 2 miles away across a road. Our house was left with minimal damage caused by flying debris. Coastal counties have to have attic struts/ties installed for roof to withstand winds of 150-175 mph We were very lucky
Pray for this country
What blows me away is no one has a basement that I’ve seen at least not in Tulsa. I don’t understand this. I don’t know how anyone sleeps soundly in Oklahoma!
I've always said the same thing I said only thing u see is my mail box my whole house be in ground lol. But like texas and on plains the ground is clay amd has something do with flooding alot why in florida u rarely see 2 story houses they keep em as low as possible for hurricanes and wind storms. And actually seen a fact that more ppl die from guns amd other stuff compared to tornados. But still a storm shelter is between 2k to 7k I would 100 percent invest in one also heard the building codes out there are still like they live in the 1900s weird
omg r you guys okay:? why would you live in state that have thooose
Does anyone know what kind of storm shelter they used?
Nice shelter!!!! Great footage!!! Thanks!!!!
I was across the street from where you were filming
Ike Skinner I was two streets down
Ike Skinner, on the video is that your house?
Who build the house in the video? :D
@@mrjohngambles really? I was around the corner from your house!
@@ItsTrizzy262 I must have been high when I wrote the comment. I live in Virginia. My apologies
OMG!!! That person filming could have been creamed! At the same time, that's is a great view of the tornado 🌪️
Anybody have a phone number for that roofing company?
Amazing first person footage. Usually we only see it from a chasers point of view. This is the one thing I kept my eyes shut through when I was in a tornado. I was scared sh*tless, maybe that's why my britches were full lol thanks for the share and pray all stay safe
I can't believe how quiet it has been as far as tornadoes are concerned these last couple of years.
Not sure where your at but I have noticed more storms in the south the past few years . Not sure if I’ve just been oblivious to it or what . but it seems a lot now we are getting more tornadoes in Louisiana . The past 3 to 4 years have been weird
Holy Hell.. Thats like right out of the "Wizard of OZ" tornado scene.
I'd like to know what brand of glue they used on the roof of that house?
VERY well done. Great job on building the shelter as well.
Imma need the name and number of that roofer. They do roofs in Alabama?
Earthquake or Tornado? I thought an Earthquake was SCARY but just to imagine being in a Tornado is HORRIFYING !! 😱
Y'all call this amazing footage? This is nothing compared to the footage captured during the Fairdale, IL tornado in 2015. It was a strong EF4 (1mph away from EF5 status). An old man filmed it coming directly to his house and destroying it from a head on view. He was on the SECOND story of his home, and survived. His wife on the first floor, did not. It's a sad story, but there's no other footage out there as real as what I described. Check it out for yourself.
I couldn't help but notice the stealthy angles on the roof of that house across the way. I wonder if that plus the absence of an overhang (soffit) would improve the houses survivability. Great video. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Research has shown that a hip roof of at least 35 degrees pitch is the best form for withstanding winds. You get enough down-pressure to counter the lifting force on the down-wind side from every direction, and there's nothing for the wind to grab onto.
Was it an F3 tornado?
It looks like you took a direct hit! I have looked out my window and seen it! Like in the video, up close and personal. When you see trees uprooted, or bent flat to the ground, you see large heavy things tossed about like toys, it makes it really real! It was some time ago, but you never forget some things... But, I love them! There is something about a tornado/ funnel cloud that can be almost hypnotic, passionate....
HOW???? Did that house remain standing? I don't even see a shingle missing!! I want to know who was their contractor!!!
Weak-ass tornado, no matter how big a boner you got watching.
Wow! I felt like I was with you in that shelter. I'm happy there appeared to be no injuries. And the house made it! Great perk!!
That wheeled push-mover blade being flung around like a feather in the wind: 00:13 doesn't look like my idea of fun!! What an amazing glimpse into the living hell a typical tornado can unleashe on any given day!! I subbed you guys a long time ago, footage like this is the reason why. =)
BDE747
Well whatever, plastic garden hose reel or not, it's still amazing footage!! =)
Forget that the trees were snapped like toothpicks that was scarier
What Lawnmower? That was a hose reel
Who built that house?
That was a close call! Tornado passed by on the left.
Why didn't you go outside for a better picture? 🤨
I live in that neighborhood it was a bad storm
What are the houses constructed of? They stood up well.
how did that house roof stay on
Wow.....great footage!! Thanks 😊
Still.....we do regret the sufferings this tornado had spawned.
What kind of shelter is that..that is amazing
I had the same question. Did anyone ever answer it?
I remember this one. Spent it in my grandparents shelter cause our house was in the most high pressure zone. Not as damaging as the one two weeks later
I’m guessing that entire house was constructed with concrete, rebar and one inch steel sheets instead of plywood. And a titanium roof
Your tornado shelter just paid for itself.
Awesome video, thanks for sharing!
Wow nice footage 👍
Boy the improvements in code over the years! That tornado literally bounced off the house.
That was an EF0 to EF1, should not have damaged that house other than maybe some shingle damage. Sadly there are new constructions out there that are up to code, but would be severely damaged by this.
I agree Bill
Who did the roof on the house
A roofing outfit called 'Tornado and Sons' .
Awesome footage
Good footage, luckily it wasnt at full strength yet it looks like it was either beginning or dying at that time. Glad for whoevers house that is that it stayed intact.
Who's this man's roofer?
Great footage .
Anyone know where this was on EF
EF4 OR EF5
This low pressure is strong guys. Just passed though California. Expect violent tornados in the F4 range in the next 56hrs.
