The true-life drama about a handicapped Baltimore woman living on welfare who organized a sandlot baseball team and ended up coaching more than 50,000 boys and girls over nearly 40 years.
Summary: The story is told over a couple of years of a disabled woman living in Baltimore, MD. The story opens in 1954 when the St. Louis Browns relocate to become the Orioles. Mary Dobkin sets up a baseball team of street kids to save them from juvenile delinquency. Because the team includes black and white kids she struggles with some of the authorities. After losing part of a foot before the movie takes place, she has half of her other leg amputated and believes she will be unable to coach for the 1955 season. She receives encouragement from a young boy who has his entire arm amputated at the same time in the same hospital. He learns to play, on her team with one arm. In the end, she takes on a girl for the outfield. A field is dedicated to her in Baltimore for the hundreds of children she coached.
Director: Peter Werner
Writers: Ellis A. Cohen (story), Burt Prelutsky
Starring Jean Stapleton, Martin Balsam, Dolph Sweet, Robbie Rist
I not only played ball for Aunt Mary, but my dad coached for her. Baseball and football. I was on her 1956 football team. We won the championship that year. She was some lady. She was a star on TV with the show "This is your life" A new car, a building for her boy's club, equipment for all of her kids, It was something else.
Dude , that's incredible.
Thanks for sharing your story!❤
Awesome story! You’re lucky to have known her
You're a legend. What an honor to have been there and known her. I was about that age when I played baseball back then. Amazing post.
That is so cool! 😎
How can 37 people give a thumbs down on this movie? A bit of history, women's liberation and dealing with racism from days gone by.
Ikr? bet it had to do with age though in every way..not realizing how good the show is either, their loss..
@@Ace-ke7fq most definitely their loss
They. Never had a big momma or aunt mary

My thoughts exactly!
Well put, it puts a tear in my eye just to reminisce on the time and film . I was three years old when the TV movie aird promos , I wish I had a shoulder to cry on 😭

Every body needs an aunt Mary in their life 😀
Better yet, we all need to be more like her.
Beautiful, Honest and All Heart ❤️ Aunt Mary, I wish the world knew more people like You.
Never heard of her before and I’m so glad that she’s been commemorated by naming the field in her honor. God bless you Mary, you were quite a woman … and you would have made a wonderful Mom!!!❤️🙏🏼❤️
Beautiful movie for kids and adults to learn true life and important lessons ! Everyone Can learn from this movie how to bring your kids up,males, females and Race ! We are all God's children after all ! If it wasn't for God ,none of us would be here. A wonderful movie !
Great movie. Jean Stapleton was excellent as were the kids. The story taught great lessons. We need more people like aunt Mary, teaching the street kids to be better people.
When I find a movie like this, I feel like I have discovered gold! Great cast, great acting, and that consummate actor Jean Stapleton leaves no doubt about her great talent. 'Sides just made me feel good all over.
Same here. Pure gold.
Well it is a feel good film 😋👍
@@winecrimesfoodandtime7119 only the purest gold.😋👍
Take a look at a full moon or the stars or the sun;Nature is great at uplifting!HugaTree
Would of liked to see some of those street kids she helped as grown adults talking about how Aunt Mary influenced their lives as kids & as adults & whether any of them went on to be baseball players in the pro's or how what she taught them helped them in whatever their careers were. Thanks for such a good movie,
Maybe someday. Keep your ears open 🙂
In junior high school, I actually pitched twisting my wrist like like how she teaches these boys…twists and snaps…
@dragons8822 •
Tom Phoebus of the Baltimore Orioles and Ron Swoboda of the NY Mets, to name 2.
I was Miss Mary's bat boy in 1982 I would drive in the car they had a station wagon to the game's. Are coach was Joe Miller the car was burgundy. I have a lot of story's I could tell. I grew up in Claremont lived there for over 15 years. Not sure who might see this. But if you have any questions ask me. Or if you grew up there let me know.
@@horace8731We would LOVE to record your stories, Horace! How can we get in touch?
My more lost her leg below the knee when she was in her early 50's. But that did not stop her from being the most amazing mother and later grandmother. She was always thinking of others....helping, baking and doing things that a normal person would do even though she was on crutches for the rest of her life. This movie reminded me of her and her, and her love and service for others.
Thanks and blessings for sharing such a positive memory! 👏👍👍❤️😊
My "more"?
Jean Stapleton Her light shall shine bright forever .
Awesome movie! Jean Stapleton put on an award-winning performance! It was a wonderful and inspiring movie to watch!
I love movies like this ! No violence , nudity, cursing, crime etc . Nothing to bump hour head just good clean entertainment . The fact that it's a true story adds so much more to it. God Bless Aunt Mary and all like her . Thank you UA-cam for this movie I hope you'll be presenting many more like this in the coming days . I've enough of the usual crap .
Aunt Mary was the bigger person and above the riffraff in this world.Thank You for sharing values and standing up to bullies.
Kim Stiles even though Nicholas Rocco was picked up by the police?????????!!!!!!

Oh wow i still remember watching this on network TV when it came out! Such a feel good movie!
A lovely tale of courage and love toward these boys.
What a wonderful story and beautiful woman. Each of us can always do something to make the world a little bit better.
Amen!
Bravo! If you loved baseball when you were a kid and still do this is a great flick for you!!!
I have been a fan of the highly skilled JS for so many years I can’t even count them! This movie is one of her best and the whole cast is stellar 😊
Extremely touching. Especially the part when the boys sing to Mary. Brought a tear to my eye.
If we all had an aunt Mary this world would be a better place. A wonderful cast great acting had me laughing smiling cheering them on. The child actors were brill, Jean Stapleton and Martin Balsam what a double a act.👏👏👏.
I looked up her history and there's a pretty solid chance she was a Russian Jew, and in Judaism there's a thing called "being a light in the world" where you try to leave the world a better place than you found it etc. She certainly did that.
Thanks Alex for the insight appreciated.😊👍
Sharon Hennessy You know, why not become that kind of person??? Try helping out others; wherever possible. If we sit and wait for others to show real compassion, we would of wasted our entire lives.
Parents like her.
Sad to say but true.
My mother was a big baseball fan loved the White Sox. My parents went on their first date to Comiskey Park. My father would teach me the finer points of the game and its history. My mother in one night gave me a baseball family and ethics lesson after Jackie Robinson died. She taught me the one lesson I never forget DO NOT JUDGE PEOPLE TILL YOU GET TO KNOW THEM FIRST
Great story and great memories!
No whoa I'm a Boston Red Sox fan. hum....
A fantastic movie that highlights the true values in life and that sport should not be the only method that transcends racism or teach right from wrong. If only there were a few million more Aunty Marys in this uncertain world we live in.

2 Things I loved about this True Story...1) HUMAN SPIRIT NEVER GIVING UP(We need it today badly-6/9/21-!!!...& 2) THOSE ACTORS TELLING THIS STORY DIRECTED BY A GOOD DIRECTOR...TY...JEAN STAPLETON always came through...!!!
Wow! I had never heard of Aunt Mary! Just amazing! Thank you for sharing such a heart warming wonderful story!
What an awesome movie. I really enjoyed this..was sad when it ended and wishing for a part 2..Jean Stapleton is one of my favorite actors of all time. .great cast and the kids did excellent.
What a precious movie. It was made better because it was TRUE! I love inspirational movies about people who actually lived and succeeded against all the odds. I did it: it makes me feel good to see others do it too. Just as she said, "You can do ANYTHING if you want to do it."
👍👍👍👍👍 Kept passing up this movie because I'm no baseball fan,
but this film is about so much more than that. One of the few times I
wished a film had gone on a little bit longer. A rare gem!
I remember watching this when it was on CBS in 1979. One of my all-time favorite movies.
Why in the world would you have remembered that it was on CBS 42 years ago?? I mean I totally believe you!😏
@@desertodavid We only had part-time TV that went off with the anthem being played to the Indian Chief in his headdress. It was awesome. So easy to remember with only 3.
Awesome movie! Loved all the little fellas but Nicky was the cutest of them all! Bringing love and order into the lives of those street kids was a great work undertaken by Ms. Dobkin. There should be more of such Aunt Mary's out there for all the lost and lonely kids of this world. Blessings tons in Christ Jesus to those already out there doing the Lord's work.
We need movies like this!!! A great movie. Thanks Aunt Mary!!!!
Brilliant movie. Absolutely loved it!
Beautiful lady, beautiful movie.
Blessings to all and the good old days. Awesome Memories, ❤XXXO
Always nice to see Jean Stapleton acting. Great story. Interesting seeing the Doctor kiss her in greeting on the lips!...and how he reaches a diagnosis so very quickly!
Loved this movie, you can’t help but smile. Reminds me of softball back in 4-H.
Why haven't I seen this before? What a treasure. I enjoyed every moment of it.
This is a fantastic movie! I can't believe I don't remember ever seeing it. It was made about the time I started playing baseball.
Very inspiring movie for the young and older generation it shows how u deserving and ddicated of ur goals in the feild of a game at the end u struggle for the win of the team.
Great movie, I CC haven’t seen one this good in a long time .❤
When just don't have the vision to see greatness you just don't...but she did❤
Here I thought I have seen all Baseball movies..

Even if she changed 1 boys life it would've been amazing 🫠😘
Everybody in this movie did a wonderful job very uplifting thanks for posting
I never expected to see Edith coach a baseball team, great person to play the coach.
Yes she was!

Stapleton in particular is wonderful. I was fortunate enough to have seen her perform live, on stage, twice: with Polly Holiday ("Alice") in "Arsenic and Old Lace" which also starred Tony Roberts and--I believe--Nathan Lane as Teddy; and again as the Stepmother in Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella" at New York City Opera.
Beautiful!! The greatest winning is the LOVE among the boys.
I can only say thank you. The upload quality was great. The movie is a great save. I'm surprised that the Anderson, Google, UA-cam folks haven't removed it for profit. You deserve a big applause.
Shhh, don't give them any ideas! √

Great movie. Very heartwarming. Well worth the watch. Enjoy. 😃
Thank you for posting this movie! Incredible that it is based on a true story. God bless Aunt Mary. She gave so much to so many. A great American movie with strong plot, likeable characters, excellent actors and script and a wonderful ABSENCE of profanity, violence, and sex. Thanks again for a wonderful family movie!

That wasn't just a nice movie, it was a great one! Lessons in inclusion for all, and knocking down barriers.

Great movie the world needs more of Aunt Mary's.
A very good movie. Watch it and see. What you think.
This is the best & coolest movie ever 😀!!!
It's great to learn history. I wonder if any boys became baseball players in college or on an adult team?
I loved this movie. Race was in this because of the truth of this story.
Education is the key to understanding. Precious people bully people because they are jealous.
I remember my neighborhood days playing softball. The youngest was 4 years old. The oldest was in the 10th grade.
Girls and boys played.
We used a vacant lot in our neighborhood in Baton Rouge.
Brothers who played a little while before being on a Little League Baseball team went on to playing in college. One was a coach .
Today, where are the kids? It's too hot to go outside. Too wet to play. Too cold. I heard those from kids who just wanted to be on teams or flirt.
I sweated so good that earwax came out on one ear.
Play Ball.
Jean Stapleton was and is a national treasure. She deliberately turned down “Edith Bunker” type roles during and after “All in the family.” I’m glad she did. It shows her diversity as an actress
"For a man your age, you have very good lung power!"🤣 because he could talk so much. Loved every minute of this movie, all the more since it is based on a real life story.
A CLASSIC very original & enjoyable I absolutely loved it 🏆🏆💖
best film ive seen for years and wow what a lady and all that she accomplished with all those years and players she coached, lovely true story.
So true we all need auntie Mary's in ourselves
This is bad new bears annit?
Need more Aunt Mary's, to show the values of equality, perseverance and never give up attitude.
Equality values? That is very communist. 👎😝😂
Now that was a great movie! I admit the 1978-1982 era of filming was more than evident in the movie, rather than trying to depict the iconic 1950s. The little bouts of prejudice seemed to wane and dissipate in the final baseball game scene, so prejudice depicted certainly didn’t match the 1955 history. I like feel good family movies, no need for violence or sexual scenes, just wholesome goodness of the story that draws you in. I wish there were more movies like this.
Did a lot of searches years ago on youtube for this movie. Today it's on my home page. Thanks, great upload

LOVED IT! I'm not a sports fan but this was still a great movie to watch - especially so because it's based on a real-life hero - Aunt Mary.
I'd trade her in for my own fucking useless Aunt Mary any time.
great movie
keeping children busy and coaching them isn't all this great lady did for over 40 years..she cared about each and everyone which is not very many things folks do anymore, but to steady pick on her it's so unbearable, the hate is too much and still happening everywhere sadly.
This is a brilliant film 💯 really enjoyed watching ❤
