I don't think it would be wise for me to have a black girlfriend, because it would piss off my pretty black wife. After 20+ years she's used to me and I'm used to her.

I appreciated the "stop exoticizing our relationship" bit. People need to start viewing interracial relationships like regular relationships and realize that individual men and women are complete and individual human beings regardless of their ethnic or cultural background.

Or the part where every black guy tries to hit on her in front of you to test your reaction. There's also the part where parents (like mine) say, "We don't have a problem with it... but the relatives will." Ah. [And, random segue but holy hell, this girl in the video is beautiful.]

We eventually patched things up and are still great friends 15 years later... so yeah, kind of an ignorant statement you made based on limited knowledge. Some would say 'prejudiced'. I had a black girlfriend for a while in 04. I took her to meet my Mom, and my Mom said something that made me cringe and want to melt like Odo, right thru the floor boards. My Mom said, "Wow, you're a tall drink of water, what tribe are you from?" I couldn't believe she said it. But, she said it. I really had feelings for the girl too. We went our separate ways, due in part to my alcohol and drug abuse.

I don't like when people 'fetishize' a race or date someone just because they are a particular race. I think people should just fall in love with other people and not make such a huge deal about it. In reality does race really make such a difference or is it the cultural differences?.. I'm white, my wife of nearly 45 years is black. We were married in Virginia in '72, not too long after the Lovings got the Supreme Court to overturn VA's miscegenation laws. My mother did not accept our marriage. Too bad for her. Her excuse was "I don't want other people talking about me." Like that was her only problem. Our beautiful daughter is a rock star who is engaged to a white Irish guy. She has no problem with being interracial, and actually identifies as being black.

Treat them like a human being because that's exactly who they are. Yes people of different ethnic backgrounds have different cultures and attributes, but we're all individuals and no one should be placed into a box because of their skin color. Black people are people - end of story. And if you want to know how to treat the African american in your life then treat them with decency and respect as all people should be treated.

I watched this a couple of years ago. (Always fun to see Past Me's comments.)
The thing I remembered the most was the whole "You can't say the N-word. Not even with a at the end of it."
Now that I have my first black girlfriend, for 3 months already, I see a lot of it in her. Although less, because she is from Africa instead of the States, so fried chicken and slavery are things she thinks less about than others.
However, the cap for sleeping, which I ignored on first viewing, is something I see constantly in her morning selfies.
She also has the same hair as you do in this video, which makes me appreciate her even more.
Thanks for this video. It was a great re-visit!

The thing about me, dating a black girl is no different than dating any other girl. I treat them all the same. #1 I would never touch any girls hair. #2 I always tell my family about the girl I'm dating, if I'm dating her. #3 I would just tell them it's just like being with any other girl, I'm very picky with women I want to date regardless of race. I'm not really a movie goer. I hate the N word, I hate hearing it. I don't watch T.V. Only Netflix and Hulu. I don't compare sizes, if she wants to be with me, then she wants to be with me.
FYI You're very beautiful and you look really cute with your hair :D

You'll touch her breaststroke and her private parts but not her hair. I love to run my fingers through a girl's hair. Especially when It's very long silky hair. And if It's long enough to reach.............well, never-ending. You get the picture.

Well...I'm starting to date a very beautiful black girl and I'm already along with most of these tips (at least the ones I understood - english is not my first language, sorry). I must tell I speak only for myself and that this is not my first interracial relationship, but I say the ethnic barrier is not very strong when you keep aware that people, although being quite different in appearance and origins, are essentially only humans. Of course relationship sensibility, consistent communication (both must be at least minimally able to share their thoughts and express their feelings) and a good emotional connection help a lot, too. Greetings from Brazil. Thanks.

I have never heard a woman say that she was not relationship material for a man because he was more educated or successful than her. Quite the contrary. Shows how hypocritical the whole equality of the sexes idea can be in the minds of the selfish and ignorant. If your okay with dating a man who is more educated and more successful than you, then you should be okay with the opposite. If not, then you don't really believe in equality. If someone having similar education and socioeconomic status makes them "your equal" you have a sad way of measuring the value of another human being.

It's almost impossible for you to have been a "first black girlfriend" of a white guy that many times and not have any of those subjects (ashiness, what nappy means or the perceived awkwardness that comes when he hasn't told his family about you) come up! For that to have happened, it would require that all of your relationships were filled with non communication, general avoidance of your differences or with men who were too afraid to ask you questions. Unless of course you are one of the most fortunate black girls in the world and all 6 of them lived in black neighborhoods all their lives - which I highly doubt - it's highly debatable that some of these issues miraculously missed your IR relationships.
Still to those women who HAVE experienced one of more of these, it doesn't mean that he's closed minded or any other negative name. It just means that he isn't black, hasn't been around enough black people and just DOESN'T KNOW. That is all.

    • @cdonaldsonanita

***** my relationships were with new york / silicon valley private school kids. & i talked about race plenty; about the overwhelming preference for white features, about colorism, about differences walking through the same neighborhood, about systematic racism etc so no, its not impossible to be in an interracial relationship without degrading yourself. i repeat, to those women who have experienced one of more of these: you are dating an asshat. end of discussion. higher standards.

***** 1. asking if he can touch your hair means hes more focused on the fact that you are 'black' than the fact that you are regularly physically intimate with him - thats degrading. asking if his family or friends can touch your hair is basically treating you like a childs show & tell animal while youre being physically intimate - more degrading 2. not telling his parents about you because hes worried about what he thinks other people think of you, simply because of your skin color - thats degrading 3. friends asking what its like to be with a 'black girl' is obvious exoticism, the woman in this video says this. the fact that this is supposedly a necessary conversation - objectification is degrading 4. asking if he can eat fried chicken around you means he refers to a stereotype of previously degraded black ppl every time he even starts to think about buying some fried chicken & somehow that stereotype makes him think of you - ie degrading 4. using the term ashy before he know what it means, meaning he is using the term not because it is familiar or useful, but because he finds it entertaining - hes belittled every black person in this case because hes belittling black culture itself 5. using the term nappy - see above 7. asking to use the n-word - actually, you know, i cant bear this video anymore. i hope you can see some of whats wrong here. i posted my first response to help black women understand that they deserve better. pls dont be so resistant to expecting more for yourself. good luck
