  • An "in depth" look at the different versions and formats of The Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes. I focus mainly on what scene are in what version of the film.
This review includes the full "tiny part where Lois Fairchild is being shouted at" scene.
Stick around after the review for a further discussion on the Tomatoverse.

Thanks for this. growing up with the original VHS release, I did not know about the edits. I remember the scenes you showed, and did not realize they were gone until I saw them again. Nicely done.

I grew up with the directors cut and it is my favorite version. I wish it would get a rerelease.

Based on how the current BR is a 4K scan and just recycles special features from the DVD I imagine the inevitable 4K release of this will be more of the same. But hey, I have seen a few releases here and there that have had alternate VHS versions as special features so... maybe.

I did go looking for a fan edit, with no luck... very tempting.

Haha, I was going to do it but I dabbled in putting up a version of the 1995 VHS and got a copyright strike so it would be a fruitless effort for youtube. Might just have to do it as a passion project though.

I grew up with the "director's cut" too, and it to this day ticks me off they've not put it on dvd/blu ray, I don't care if they can't make it look like 4k, I don't care if it's stuck in standard, this is the version I grew up with and it kills me that they won't give it to use again!

I've got so much to say on this topic, I just don't know where to start. Anyway, I'm glad to see there are other "weirdos" out there who like this kind of movies. I really thought no one would even remember these movies any more.
As for the sequel where the tomatoes turn into tomato people, I personally liked it, because it's a joke on Rambo and similar action movies from the era, where you see these characters walk around half nude the whole time without any good reason other than to show their muscles. The girls, on the other hand, are reference to different teen and horror movies from the era... I had a good laugh over both.
As for the annoying character you said you hate throughout the movie in one of the sequels, well... That was shot back in 1990, which was the year straight out of the 80's - when many movies had characters like him. They basically thought it was cool (to be selfish,) which is not. As for the actor playing him, I'm sure you know he's one of the writers and part of the crew in 3 out of 4 movies. So, a real Killer Tomato supporter. Personally, I liked seeing him take the lead role.

Thanks for your input. I was unaware of that bit of information about part 3 (mainly because I have never really felt the urge to look into that one) and it does make him a bit more likable knowing that.

And I didn't even talk about the beta or the laserdisc! Part 3&4 are definitely an acquired taste, even for fans of the first two movies. Have a great day!
