    I loved her response to Howard in the beginning. He's trying to sexualize her "Ohh baby, the things I would do to you." And she says, "I'm not supposed to get upset right? I'm supposed to laugh." Love Lauryn.

    This is one of the reasons why she had to get away from the Industry. When somebody comes at you with as much disrespect as these people came at her with, you have to evaluate your surroundings. There is no doubt in my mind that Lauryn Hill is wise and in control of her life and she is pressing for the truth in everything she does.
    Finding out the truth about the world will break a person down. I am amaized that she is able to continue in the same industry that basically crucified her...

    She is only stating that she does not have the "sell out" spirit that most ppl in the industry 2day has. Most record execs 2day would love for you to sell your soul and she refuses to this very day. Big ups to Lauryn Hill!!

    I agree with you 100%. It's like Howard Stern was trying to manipulate the conversation to push his own agenda. Making sexual innuendos and directly asking Lauryn Hill if she would have sex with him and "what he would do to her". How arrogant of him. He wanted to make this young, dignified, talented, intelligent, beautiful black woman look bad. But as Lauryn Hill puts it: "if they could stop this fruit, they would pop this root, chop this root, treat us like we're prostitute. NOT THIS YOUTH!"

      ok i was a HUGE fan of Lauryn whn i was a kid, one of my fav artists to ever do it, but it ruined a lot of ppls outlook on her as a “child of God” whn she made the comment that she would rather her kids starve than for white ppl to purchase or listen to her music cuz it wasn’t made for us…. that was the end for me… cuz us white ppl spent a LOT of our white $ on buying her actual album and not bootlegging it

    If people call Lauryn racist because of the fact that she makes music inspired by her enviornment and the people she interacts with...then how come no one ever says anything about country singers being racist because you know damn well they dont want or intend on any black people buying their music.

    Thanks for this. Do you have the rest? This was quite interesting. I couldnt believe how they were talking to her lol. I kept expecting Wyclef to tell them off. I don't think Lauryn is racist. I just think she's pro-black.

    All you negative guys in here seem to be deaf. She said very clearly and peacefully that her music is universal and that she doesn't have a problem us whites buying it. She said it even TWICE. Besides she has collaborated with Joss Stone. So will you please drop it finally? 😉

  • @RochelleHansonMusic
    @RochelleHansonMusic 16 років тому +4

    white people do make music for young white people, my friend. i hate to say it like this, but the world is full of double standards.. and that's exactly why Lauryn started out doing what she was doing. Lauryn saw a need to encourage young blacks and so she did. That was her purpose. That was her focus. The fact that her music has been accepted universally is a bonus. You can't fault her for making music from the heart - double standard or not.

    First off this interview was from 1996..Her solo debut was in 1998..She sold 8 million in the US alone..so she definately wasnt losing any record sales because of this rumor..People always flipping shit around and twisting it, when confronted this Shawn guy and the other could not say they heard lauryn say that..That is considered a rumor!..Lauryn Hill is not a stupid woman at all!

    I really admire Lauryn Hill. She's one of the last artists I see as "iconic" such as people like Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix or Aretha Franklin are seen as iconic. She was an incredibly talented artist and a stunningly beautiful woman. It would be very disappointing if she had racist feelings towards white people. Apparently she might have made some statements justifying black peoples hatred of whites because of the past.

    • @Leonora485
      @Leonora485 7 років тому +9

      Lauryn is too deep for you and others to comprehend. You all will never understand the black experience and the impact of slavery and oppression; for this reason, you all are still not able to recognize that what was done in the past still resonates in the future, here and now! Please connect the dots. Lauryn Hill speaks from a place of experience, as we all do (blacks). We will never forget, because white America won't let us forget as we continue to be oppressed by the thoughts and actions of those deemed by a false sense of superiority/privilege. Have you looked at the news lately? We constantly get a slap in the face, time and time again. It just so happens that whites are always the protaganist who invoke these feelings. What else can we do beside express our feelings. Whites put us on the bottom. What would you expect from one who has been kept at the bottom of the ladder; when everything that we had including our family value system had been taken from us when whites separated us from our land..... Africa. Then the audacity to transport us here and treat us like dung..... and now say we whine, cry and ask for handouts. There is something very illogical about any individual who can't grasp the concept of "cause and effect," in making the connection from the past to present!

      I don't have racist feelings towards nobody but if she did have them feelings as a black woman she would be very justified in having them feelings considering what white people have done to black people for 400 + years, black people have more a right to have ill feelings towards white people than Jews have a right to have ill feelings toward Germans.

    She's saying that she doesn't gear her music towards white people, and while she appreciates them buying her records, that's not why she makes music. I get that. I don't see why the rest of you don't. Her music is geared towards people who can relate to its subject matter, in this case, minorities (specifically black Americans). It's not directed towards the struggles that most whites have to go through. It's directed towards a different audience. That's why she makes music.

    Lauryn Hill is AMAZING! Point blank. When Fugees released "killing me softly" the entire industry and fans loved it! Crossover success was bound! On top of that Lauryn's voice is sooo attractive to the ear as well as her lyrical content, many "new" listeners (because of the crossover hit) became interested in her. Then she went solo! When the new listeners listened in on the new record and begin to hear her "format" they started questioning themselves! Is she too happy to be black? who is she?

    You know why that is. They just write him off as a clown and discount anything he says. He is just there for their entertainment just as most of these rappers. They could not do that with Lauryn; therefore, they set out to distract from her message. Anyone that cares to be honest knows she did not say what they accused her of. Her message is strong and her image is powerful. She is a beautiful young sister inside and out. They blew a little smoke, but the smoke always clears in the end.

    shes saying that when she writes music she writes it with people just like herself in mind. not that she doesnt write it for white ppl but just that she is inspired by the ppl who may be experiencing what she experienced. of course many people of different races can identify with her music because it is that beutiful, and alot of her stuff dealt with heartache, who doesnt experience that.

    All I know is.. I'm white and have no idea what it has to feel like to be a black youth growing up in this country. But what I do know is, not a whole lot of time has passed since slavery has been abolished. I don't think that there is anything wrong with Lauryn wanting to reach primarily an african "american" audience. I think there is a difference, If a white person only wanted white people to bu their music.. wtf for? I could think a couple reasons the other way around, but im out of letters.

    @acodike Lauryn Hill is not a Racist, , the matter here is a lack of understanding, For some reason white people do not want to see black people participate in their culture communities, wear their hair natural, they think it spells "i hate white people" when that is not true, Clearly Lauryn did not say she didn't want white people to listen to or buy her music, she states that she isn't making music to solely appear to the majority to be POPular, its a matter of POP music versus Real music

    @FACEFAM1 obviously Lauryn Hill growing up in Newark, NJ knows that there are white people in the ghetto, but anyone who is really from the ghetto also knows that their aint that much, it's mostly blacks and Latinos, so overall people in different communities don't face all the same problems, but anyway Lauryn Hill has love for all, she was just writing songs to bring attention to problems faced in urban community, I'm sure that she invites everyone, any race to listen to her music

    I love howard but I love Lauren way waaay more. She doesn't get his sense of humor - that it's his job to be the most entertaining jackass radio personality. Black or white, most entertainers roll with the punches because of the extensive public relations training built into their contracts. Lauren has always gone against the grain and displays a higher understanding - realizing that everyone is going through a similar struggle and that we all need help. Love is all we need folks.

    Cause we should go according to character, words and actions not looks.

    she made good music..and to be honest there are plenty of racist people, black white chinese watever. her problem is that she was famous and let it slip.
    if she really WASNT racist then fine..her music is good.
    (im sure she worked and was friends with white people?)
    if she really WAS racist then fine..her music was good.

    i think its unfair why is it acceptable for her to say things like that about white people! and if a white person said that about a black person then it would be classed as racism! lauren hill is amazing it upsets me for her to say things like that, i think this is a lesson we should all put a stop to racism it wrong!
