  • Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, the conclusion of the Entity storyline and a look at the first issue of a Pokémon comic!

    Originally uploaded October 31st, 2011.
ORIGINAL INFO: It’s Linkara vs. the Entity! But what are the origins of this creature and what does it have to do with Pokémon?
RUMINATIONS: When I first conceived of the Entity storyline, waaaay back during the beginning of the Vyce arc, I had originally planned on it being an actual fight (since back then, every storyline finale would be Power Rangers themed). I’d wield a Quasar Sabre from Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy and actually hit a static image of MissingNo. with it. Why that? Because after how exhausting the Mechakara finale had been and how tiring I knew the Vyce finale would be, I wanted an ending fight that would be simpler and easier to edit.
Thank God that did not come to pass.
The Cthulhu mythos is why the Entity was defeated the way it was. It was inspired by them, after all - a shapeless, all-powerful horror (its origin in this case spawned from a video game glitch as opposed to just being an old one) who would one day consume the world. So in restudying some of the mythos, trying to see if Lovecraft ever came up with a solution to their defeat, I thought more and more about this old favorite: “In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming.” And I was suddenly puzzled. WHY is Cthulhu dead? I’m sure it’s just because the nature of creatures like this are beyond human concepts of life or death, but if we were to look at it from a human lens, WHY is Cthulhu dead? And why is one time better than another when we’re still so inferior to it? For that matter, if the Old Gods are truly as powerful already as suggested by the mythos… why HAVEN’T they conquered everything already? On top of that, why would they need to conquer, anyway? If they’re already that powerful and if they’re beyond OUR concepts of good and evil… what benefit is there to conquer? What do they GET out of it? Now, I’m fairly certain the mythos DO have the answers to these questions (mostly a resounding, “They don’t actually care. We just see it as conquest when in reality they just accidentally stepped on us.”), but I came up with an image in my head of Cthulhu… or rather, a giant SKELETON of Cthulhu… waiting beneath the oceans, dreaming for its time… and then suddenly realizing that it had no purpose, no reason to conquer, no reason to do ANYTHING. And it accepted its fate and thus died of BOREDOM.
And THAT is how you defeat the Entity - by exposing it to pure existential horror - the meaningless of existence and the absurdity of the cosmos… and how utterly pointless its own existence was. Now I personally believe in a meaning of life, a reason for our existence, and that ultimately there is something else for us beyond this life that’s shaped by how we live this one, but that’s just speculation on my part. For a being like the Entity, who DID live in other realities and saw itself as eventually encompassing everything, the thought of utter pointlessness and lacking meaning in anything was beyond what it could fathom or want.
However, coincidentally, in the previous episode, Venom had ended the horrific, planet-ending threat of the symbiotes by making all the symbiotes commit suicide. So in-universe, it gave Linkara the inspiration to try to end the Entity threat THAT way. Also, the explanation given in the episode for why MissingNo. happens is… incomplete and a bit inaccurate. It has more to do with saving the player’s NAME so it can be replaced with “OLD MAN” vs. the sprite, but whatcha gonna do? And the reason why everyone fades back into existence in this one? Because one of the cameos at the end had them fade back in, so I decided “Eh, screw it, everyone comes back that way.”
And for the reupload, I’ve fixed up the audio hiss as with the last episode AND fixed two graphical glitches in the episode (one being a missing static effect, the other misplaced frames for when Phelous comes back into existence).

I like MissingNo.'s reaction to Linkara's speech. The way it keeps flickering, the roundabout logic it's using to try and rationalize it's purpose, its voice becoming less stable, and even how the glitches got worse. It's kind of like a program breaking down, which makes sense considering what MissingNo. was and still kind of is.

So I was saving this comment for this episode as I've been rewatching the series so as to not spoil this arc for any newcomers.
The Entity as 90s kid is downright terrifying on rewatch. It's always there right in front of your eyes, peering over your shoulder. it's a predator that loves to toy with its prey. It enjoyed watching Linkara squirm over the months. What I never noticed was just how much the evidence is right in front of you the whole time. Sure I knew about the twist this go around, but didn't realize the hints along the way. This really made me appreciate the stories he tells.
And you know what else? It's still better horror than the Silent Hill comics

      - You have to find it on the cost, directly next to the island
      - Catching it completely screws up the game
      - An obvious reference to the name
      - the fact that this thing was literally never meant to be found
      - The effect this thing has on then entire game, especially when caught
      - It's the first 'character' to have no index number
      - The cry it makes is a horrible electronic hiss
      - It sometimes appears as a skeleton (as it did for Linkara when he tried it)
      - Its effect is to destroy one's 'fame' as in 'hall of fame' is corrupted (and arguably the game as a whole)
      - See above

I love the resolution because it's not something that'd work against any god, but works perfectly on a being that cares solely for one thing. Once you give a god humanity, human emotion, this wouldn't work, because then they'd want to create things, as Linkara rightly points out as a possibility to the entity. A god with any sort of desire of power could come up with ways to pass the time, but something whose entire existence is 'order' or 'control' or 'being' has no answer.

As for how you defeated MissingNo, I thought that was a great idea, especially since you went the Outer God route with his genesis and the basis of his existence in your story. Always loved Pokemon, and I started getting into the Cthulhu mythos thanks to watching Ask Lovecraft and getting curious about the actual Lovecraft's creations, as well as their references in the Fallout games. All in all, this was an incredible arc you created, and the conclusion is probably my favorite so far! I can't wait to see how what comes next as I continue marathoning your series Linkara!

A couple of things regarding Pokemon:
First, and I know I'm going to get a lot of people arguing with me about this, but the whole "you must be 10 years old to be a Pokemon Trainer" thing exists only in the anime and related media. I COULD go about listing the canonical ages of the various PCs but the easiest way to prove this is by pointing out all of the Preschooler Trainers you can encounter in various game. They're sure as hell not 10.
The whole "all Pokemon are the same species" crap seems to come solely from that comic. I know the games don't treat that as a fact and I can't recall the anime doing it, either.
The Pokeball turning Pokemon into energy is a theory, not a fact. Another theory, and one I find to be far more likely, is that the Pokeball turns Pokemon into data. That's why they can be stored in the PC and traded over the Internet. Also, the anime has shown that Pokeballs don't work on humans for some reason (possibly a programming thing) and, as others have pointed out, the games show that the Pokeballs CAN hold items. However, warehouses still exist and can be seen in the games and probably the anime.
The gameplay for Pokemon also HAS actually changed in a pretty major way over the years. Even disregarding all of the tweaks made in the individual games, Generation IV (Diamond/Pearl/Platinum) introduced the Physical/Special split meaning that whether a move was a Physical attack or a Special attack wasn't dependent on its Type. This drastically changed Pokemon even on a casual level.
I feel like there's more but I can't remember anything else that you didn't point out in your credits.

Since we're nearing the 10th anniversary of this episode I thought I'd give a wee retrospective of this climax & how it's reached this point:
    * it's been a 1+ year long build up with the 'Silent Hill' comic reviews with small but atmospherically creepy intros of a story of a little girl who was the cruel victim to a loathsome, deranged cult that worshipped an equally loathsome Lovecraftian God we're not quite privy to (yet)
    * Throughout Halloween & through to 2011, the dark nature of 'The Entity' starts to become more & more pronounced (with Lord Vyce's defeat & exile) with presenters of other shows disappearing (Marzgurl, Obscurus Lupa, JesuOtatu & ThatDudeInTheSuade)
    * Before climaxing with a truly unique & shocking reveal & on the true identity of 'The Entity' is both outrageous, horrific & incredible!!!
    * Who would've thought (Spoiler Alert) that a Glitch Pokemon from the earliest Gameboy Games becoming an Eldritch Abomination in another reality adds both a hilarious but terrifying twist.
    * last of all is the payoff:- how Linkara defeats The Entity:- the previous review 'Spiderman--Planet of the Symbiotes' was a case of hidden foreshadowing of how this horrendous foe was to be beaten! Simply by pointing out that The Entity is simply composed of nothing, it can't be anything else but nothing! Akin to the Oruboras (a Serpent eating its own tail) & therefore its one true sense of purpose for nothingness is simple oblivion!
So here's to you Linkara; if only the comics industry, TV & games could turn to you for storytelling as this

I always was a skepticist regarding entity-like villains in pop culture. They are really baffling and self-sabotaging characters, having human-like motivations when to get down to it. What is the use of being an "entity" if you exist only to conquer. I think Linkara 's paradoxical, "glitching the glitch" ending, unintentionally parodies and transcends the traditional Doctor Who-esque villains' goals. It's accidentally ingenious if you think about it.

In early 2013 (It was in March if I recall correctly), I was looking for Pokemon Reviews on UA-cam and stumbled on two videos in particular: Doug's review on Pokemon: The First Movie and your review. Seeing these videos got me interested in looking into Channel Awesome, and by the end of the year I was a fan of Doug, Lindsey, Joe and Todd.
In 2014, I started watching your videos, and was hooked rather quickly. This review really got that idea going
I had known that concept, in a sense, for a long time (I remember reading the title one of my dad's DVD cases in our living room and thinking that technically anything could be used as a weapon and be used to kill) but watching this review on UA-cam, and I think out of context, and actually fearing a Pokémon glitch of all things (I wasn't even that familiar with Pokémon at the time, red and blue were before my time as I was born in '98) helped form an idea that I hope to use as effectively in future projects as it is in this. So thanks Lewis for inspiring me!

"and it only now TEN pages in where we actually get exposition on the pokemon universe"
*This was published in a shonen magazine; where comics are battling each other for the interest of the 13-15 year-old boys reading them, in fear of getting cancelled for low ratings.*
*Knowing the average attention span of the shonen demographic, you should know opening a story with two pages of exposition is a genuinely DUMB IDEA. Sure, the kid could skip it, but if the kid doesn't know pokemon(hey anything's possible!) he might get confuse later in the story and when he turns back to the exposition pages for help, he'll find it boring.*
*at that point he'll likely just say "fuck it" and read a different comic in the magazine. Mind you, manga magazine usually have 8 - 13 comic chapters per issue.*
    24:08 - 24:46
"and here's where get a little confusing, we cut to them at night sleeping in the forest, then we see ash leaving pallet town and saying good bye to his mother and may who gives him a map, and then him declaring that he shall be the best, and a scene of pikachu refusing to get in his pokeball
okay what the hell was the point of that, was he dreaming what happened. Why not just include it the proper place: before he when to..."
*Yeah that's a peculiar a technique often utilized not only in manga/anime but also in western film and television. In japan it's referred as フラッシュバック(Furasshu bakku) here in america it's called a* "flash back"
