I think it was a sound effect added much like the obscure noises in Spaghetti Westerns to add a strange melancholy to the scene... an audio tension to reflect a conflict of wills
You are welcome. It was the first movie I saw,after my Parents moved us to So. Calif. 1962. To this day,it is my Favorite movie. I have watched it,dozens of times

Fantastic movie, i was born 6 years after this movie but since watching it as a child its one of my favourite still till today and to me Yul Brynner's greatest role.
