This is amazing insight. I'd add one thing, all TV stations' biggest advertising client by far is the government. Like a big four consultancy, the government can run public announcements any time they want. All news is under the thumb.
It's a two-sided point. Governments can cut funding to stations either by their donors not advertising on dissenting platforms, or by simply not paying for those public safety ads. Generally the latter is a bigger threat to commercial stations as that's how they make the bulk of their funding. TV stations usually give airtime to PSAs at a discounted rate to make them look like good little doggies, especially under Liberal govt's. Source: Used to work in the media industry.

He knows what he’s doing mate
Regarding defence spending. It’s also your freind Howard. He didn’t replace necessary defence infrastructure so a large bill built up over his decade in power. Because of bulk obsolescence. Which has only made it easier to heap on juicy extras on top of the needed extra spending to make up for the deficit in investment.
I'm gonna figure out how to setup RSS for Michael West's news site, he's great at explaining what's going on that's being covered up by the daily newscycle. Also gotta comment to help the algorithm lol
I dont know who this dude is, but for some reason, seeing him being so smart and Jordan just looking up to him idk....this video just makes me feel so good.
I love Michael West. He's not quite right here about MMT and monetary operations, but at least he's discussing it. Paul Keating also brought on recession in 1991 by running fiscal surpluses, just as Frydenberg did in 2018 when he ran a fiscal surplus. But neoliberalism was brought to this country by the ALP via the UK Labour Party, Denis Healey and co (both parties laid the groundwork for Thatcher and Howard respectively) and Mitterrand's French Socialist Government pushed it big time in Europe (French Finance Minister Delors ended up becoming the President of the European Commission), setting up the disaster that is the EU. All neolibs that view the economy through the wrong lens and surrendered to big capital. That's why our political system is utterly strangled. So that's where corporate money comes in to it too. As does the depoliticisation process of neolib governments, that's why you've got outsourcing of MP duties. It's to pass the buck and ensure a lack of accountability. Same thing has happened with the European Commission (unelected technocrats making decisions for electorates who never voted them in) and the RBA in Australia (Lowe is an unelected technocrat who the Treasury defers to). Both sides of politics here have depoliticised the RBA and called it 'independent' when it is absolutely a creature of the Government and should be consolidated into the Treasury to bring some democracy back to fiscal and monetary policy in this country. As it stands, the Treasury passes the buck and hollows out the democracratic process in our country with a lack of accountability. Incidentally, Keating is worried about his super baby dying, which would please the IPA immensely, as would the privatisation of the ABC (something you're contributing to, you naughty boy), but it was meant to reduce the tax burden. It won't, because it was based on a failed macroeconomic lens and in fact could add to it. Keating knew this, he's just fiscally conservative. For example, he kept the bond market in operation to allegedly place a political discipline on governments when he knows what the RBAs real powers are. The bond market is also a great source of corporate welfare. Shall we talk about Hawke and Keating's multiple neoliberal accords that blunted union power and worker rights in the 1980s, at the same time as Thatcher was dismantling unions in the UK?
Qantas is mentioned. Who privatised that? Our mate Keating and this is why we've got a lack of regulation and out of control financial instability. There's no price stability because there's no government regulation any more. He started it all. The financialisation of the markets that Howard and Costello exploited further. 25,000 people are about to lose their jobs. If it was still nationalised, those workers would be safe. And we need more competition than just Qantas and Virgin. You only have to look at the supermarket chains to see that they are authoritarian markets. They're not free markets. And Post Keynesians like MMTers did predict the GFC, which is why they're so down on Keating...
@@AFW007 I sit on the fence in regards to Keating. I mean, I really hated his privatisation of Telecom, AusPost and QANTAS, but i didn't mind the other liberalising methods that he put forward. Those three should be public services.
@@rtmpgt problem is mate, all of his policies were based on fundamental macroeconomic misunderstandings. Super for example is meant to release the debt burden of Australians, because it's under the false assumption that Australians should have to provision themselves for their retirement, rather than merely receiving a pension from the Fed. They are the currency issuer. All they need to do is budget for it. As it is super is massively subsided and if we ever come up against a real resource constraint, it will actually mean Australians will need to be taxed in order to prevent against inflation, thus reducing their super. It's dumb. It should be semi nationalised (Costello/Howard reforms made it eminently worse) into the RBA. The RBA sets the interest rates that it chooses. It could say we are going to pay 3% return on interest if you keep it in an account with us or you can go out to the private market and risk higher returns or diminished savings due to the financialisation of the market and the fluctuations of an unregulated system. The guy was a great orator, but a pathetic financial manager. He brought on the 91 recession by running fiscal surpluses, exactly what Frydenberg did. The best thing he did was float the dollar and give the Fed greater fiscal capacity to achieve full employment...
Sometimes they randomly swap some of the schedule around. They're probably working on some fat JRFS video which needed a bit more time, so instead of this interview on Sunday, they'll put it here now...

Prawny has been banging on about Jordan's chin, but we're all sleeping on Michael's magnificent box-chin
Very insightful. Thank you Jordon for arranging.
Clear, lucid, calm analysis and bringing the real hidden stories to light. Thank you.
Michael West should be a permanent guest on
friendlyjordies!!!!
A candid an open discussion about how the wool gets pulled over all of our eyes and something that should be openly discussed and condemned by people of Australia! Thankfully you have open and free thinking media like the two guys in this video ! Good on ya!
I rate these interviews as they help provide insight into these systemic issues unreported by major media outlets. It would be even better to hear from your guests what they believe the public can do to help overcome these issues (e.g. changing bank or superfund to help allocate money to ethical causes like u have mentioned before).
This was fantastic - thank you
Well this was definitely one of the more eye opening videos ive watched on this channel and thats saying a lot
ANOTHER MICHAEL WEST PLEASE!!!!!! Weekly would be ideal
These classic Jordies interviews are just getting better and better
Got a classic pic of hobart in the background. True blue classic.
"Pure West"
If you know, you know.
Michael doesn't need molded plastic.
I'm really grateful for this video, it lends so much insight into the current state of Australia as well as lending some hope! You the real MVP Jordan, Michael West's work and mind is incredible
Do Michael East next
Some say, he's not Michael West, he's Michael West's Chinese cousin!
@@rtmpgt Underrated comment.
this has gone michael south
Eagerly awaiting the AUWU meltdown videos.
It's gonna be huuuge
If jordies makes it well informed and it's not just jabs it'll shut those smug self righteous idiots on Facebook and Twitter
@@Divison1GeneralDarui Not really lmao. Just looks like a bunch of LARPing Pinkos on twitter having a sad because their fake union's being called out for their BS.
@@rtmpgt 6000 people have viewed this video. 10 000 people watched his spontaneous twitch stream. It'll get the views and in that respect be huge.
@@rtmpgt Whole thing was a shit show. They're obviously mostly spergs and larpers but Jordy just looked like he was having a meltdown and trying to shit on this tiny inconsequential union for zero reason.
Can we please have another with Mr West?
WAKE UP MR WEST, MR WEST,
MR FRESH, BY HIMSELF HE SO IMPRESSED
This was amazing and so eye-opening. I need to subscribe to Michael's work, and Independent Australia (and The Guardian). On the to-do-soon list. I feel like it's very important to keep these people researching real corruption and documenting the truth. Thanks for producing this.
I love Michael's reading glasses. I got my pair for $3.50 at the Salvos
the out line of talk back radio would be the fact the wireless was cutting edge technology for the majority conservative base listening 50 years ago.
Very interesting watching this interview after recent events!
43:52 "well that depends on what you mean by cwisis Jordan..."
micheal west is such a damn beast how do you get dat smart
Awesome!!!! Been wanting this for a while!
best one so far imo
They need to do a podcast
just amazing just how relevant this interview is this in August 2022
Holy fuck, you got the man himself! Absolute legends
A thing to think about, If a major company is publicly listed it will always behave to preserve profits to hand to the shareholder, so this model being observed by the majority has/will create allot of bad behavior especially in an economic disaster scenario.... a CEO stays a CEO as long as profits flow to shareholders..... sometimes the design of the corporate environment makes the monsters.... like all things to much of one way of doing something will become a cancer....
I love how mega corps are obsessed with customer feedback, but one sniff of criticism and they clutch their pearls in horor.
"If you give us money, we'll be good little doggies for like, 5 maybe 10mins before we turn into fucking attack dogs the very second you want to fix your own shit" - Corporations maybe.
Halton is chair of the global Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations and in March 2020 was appointed to the executive board of the Australian National COVID-19 Coordination Commission.
@@rtmpgt Wow you replied. Appreciate that. Isn't the bottom line that commercial news is completely under the thumb of their biggest client the Federal Government? Its very refreshing to see a group of people more cynical and invested in political corruption than I am. Instant patreon cheers.
@@rtmpgt MW mentions he is concerned the banks will come out of this stronger than ever. I wonder if the victims of money laundering that the banks have been negligent with will sue them. A drop in the ocean though hey.
Love these interviews that give you an insight into labor v liberal politics
It's a dirty, tactical game... Not the holier-than-thou, idealistic world we've been taught about.
Love your videos! The only reason I have political knowledge at all, and the only reason my liberal-media blinders were taken off. Please never stop making vids
you need a friendly jordies highlight channel like rogan et al. with bits from your long form interviews. this reaching a wider audience.
michael west legend. Also looks like what voldemort would have looked like somewhere between making his 2nd and 3rd horcrux if he put on a suit.
Great work Jordan, keep up the interviewing of interesting people
Great interview!
don't know if im more sad or mad about this
keep it up Michael and Jordan!!!!
Finally, a video that's just "pure West"
Jordan is interviewing his future self
They look alike.
This is what the 8th dimension looks like.
Loving these long-form interviews! :)
Ey Jordan I'm gonna shoot straight and narrow here: I couldn't care less about your meme review content, I'm here for the political and news stuff. I doubt I'm alone in saying I'd actually share your stuff around a lot more if your channel was a bit less off-putting (not tryna be mean bruz just sharing where my heart is). xoxo love you big boi
Completely agree. Theres alot of memelord left wing aussie political commentary and its just never going to get the societal impact that this content needs to have.
Yeah I agree. It's probably just to get attention from people who otherwise wouldn't look at these things, so understandable if so. I'd rather bachelorette junk be relegated to his vlog channel. He frequently produces quality and accessible political commentary
I would watch his channel for either reason combining them just makes it the best channel on UA-cam and I think the reason he got so popular was his comedy so it works for him
He’s trying to reach young people that aren’t interested in politics. I’ve been watching Jordan or a while and my partner was never interested in any of the political videos, but she watched one of the meme videos and now she’s subscribed, watches both and actually knows something about politics and what’s going on in the LNP now.
Really great interviewing Style Jordan and MW is really up there with the most interesting people to listen to
I would double my Patreon for a weekly 'West Report' on this channel
02:16 disturbing how accurate this is
Outstanding content with this interview & Menadue...Keep it up Jordy & team!!👏👏👏
So how long until the media has an aneurysm over the trump mug and ignores the entire content of the interview?
he's not a politician they wouldn't care. hopefully they wont cut out the watermark if they did though
27:57 find a girl who looks at you like Jordan looks at Michael.
I dont know who this dude is, but for some reason, seeing him being so smart and Jordan just looking up to him idk....this video just makes me feel so good.
Thank you, finally! Do it again next week!
