    I was surprised by just how much social commentary was present within Jefferey Combs portrayal of The Question...a startling amount when compared to other shows. The culture industry, the exigencies of power, identity, the philosophy of truth, perceptive reality..."nebulous" is indeed the proper word.

      His portrayal showed an uncomfortableness with the status quo, It also showed heroes did not necessarily have to be so mainstream. Often times, the Question was a better detective than Batman because his willingness to look at things that Batman could/would not.

    For those wondering, yes, Rorschach was based on the Question. Moore wanted to do a story with the old Charlton characters that DC had just acquired, but DC had plans for them, so Moore just made a few changes. Dr. Manhattan=Captain Atom Comedian=Peacemaker Rorschach=The Question Silk Spectre=Nightshade Night Owl=Blue Beetle. Hardcore Charlton geeks spotted it right away, but we were pretty few and far between even then. One of my favorite characters, and the early material has been DC Archived in Action Heroes Volume Two. You can snag these fore about 20 bucks on ebay now if you are interested. The Denny O'Neil run from the eighties also stands as that writer's finest work, and that's saying something. They go dirt cheap, but you gotta hunt for them.

      DC Comics has done enough damage to Green Arrow and Superman already by taking cues from the live-action shows they involved those characters with.

    The reason everyone likes Rorschach is because he is the /only/ hero (besides maybe the punisher) who has his kind of moral absolutist view on justice. Question had this in his original form, that's why Moore wanted to use him for Watchmen, and now Question's just been devolved into exactly the same moral beacon fighting for social justice that every other hero is these days.
    I'm not saying it's bad to have a hero who's interested in social justice, but it'd be nice to have one that wasn't.

    Well DC has heard you, and Jeff Lemire takes over the OG Question in a new 3 volume series called The Question: The Deaths of Vic Sage for DC Black Label.
    I can honestly say, The first volume is the real deal. We got the objectivist views of Ditko and the Zen philosophy and martial arts training of Denny O'Neil. Combined with a great mystery case set up makes for a great classic crime noir graphic novel.

      @HiddenInTheTruth 5 років тому +6

      @@ant-fan New 52 made "The Question" into a supernatural being with no identity and Vic Sage an unrelated character who was Amanda Waller's supervisor. It was terrible.
      Thankfully, Rebirth seems to have finally brought back Vic as the Question and made him a normal human again. The best pure detective in DC. (Batman is the "world's greatest" due to his resources as much as his skills, but often Vic is written as a better pure detective, just lacking the equipment that gives Batman the edge.) Of course, it is still pretty new so we'll see how he is handled as an extra in Action Comics. Hope it is enough to give us another proper series.

    I think it's interesting that some of the creators took such long walks before barely getting to admitting they were criticizing Ditko's "myopia" in the creation of The Question. The fact that they had gargantuan issues with the unwavering, and some would say suffocatingly intractable (Oh, yeah? Try Mr. A.), moral bent of Ditko's original vision of the character is not what I have a problem with; having the temerity to believe that you "fixed" Ditko's "shortsightedness" is.
    I think Denny O'Neil is a brilliant writer and creator, and his influence on modern storytelling is ongoing -- and I don't believe that he thought he was "fixing" Ditko's vision. Personally, I think O'Neil's version of The Question was pretty cool. And while I respect the fact that he established up front that he could not run with the Ditko version, I think it does a significant injustice to the creator when you change the character's motivation on such a seismic level (but that's corporate copyright and ownership for you). He was still a great character, but he was no longer The Question.
    Please understand that I am not knocking the idealistic, liberal wellspring from which the super-heroic concept was conceived. I love that world. If everything was written from a black-and-white perspective, it would be incredibly boring. And besides, that's where the lessons of right and wrong were brought to life for a great many of us growing up -- within the pages of comic books; a moral code rooted in fantasy, but there's truth in that.
    Had it remained under Ditko's stewardship only, it is very likely that the motivations of The Question may have run their course and the character would have no place left to go. When the end was to come, it should have come from Ditko's pencil and brush.

    The Question is my favorite character because he is so different. I don't think the girl question is really going to hit home. I like the romance of the Hunter and The Question. Bottom line, give this character more attention. DC Marvel, could of made Justice League Batman Dooms movie with the help of The Question to figure out how to stop the over powered JL when they become bad guys, both could of use this character to discover the mystery of what is going on. Plus, God's Among Us video game didn't even have The Question in it at all. His character could of added dept to the story plus; he could of been investigating the Justice League and his super power could of been getting people indited and SWAT comes out of nowhere to beat this person up or something. They need to do more with this character because he is interesting enough to hold his own among these highly powered superheros.

      No, DC ruined The Question long before the 52.
      The only good Question stories that had been done in years before that awful revamp were the reprints of the original comics in the DC Archives and JLU animated series which probably introduced more people to the character aside from Watchmen.
      The character itself was largely unused for years between his last solo series in the 1980s/early 1990s(?) and the developments prior to 52 which editorially makes 1990s Marvel look great by comparison. The character in the 1980s series was radically revamped. I loved The Question in the JLU animated series -- he became one of my favorites in that series -- but, pardon the pun, I question if The Question has been written by anyone (outside of Ditko) the way Ditko intended in the original 1960s series. I doubt that personally.
      The last pre-52 business of giving the original character cancer and replacing him with Renee Montoya never made any sense but, then again, DC editorial hasn't operated with ANY common sense for at least 10 years now!!!

    Kevin Smith who has directed a few flash episodes has said he would love to do the question as a tv series. I honestly think he sincerely wants to see it get made whether he is fully involved or not, he just wants to see it happen he likes the question that much. I know nothing about the question til i heard him talk about him so came here to get more info. Now I really want to see this as a tv show. I certainly feel like this would be great done like the Daredevil series on netflix, I know its dc and they got their hands full with marvel characters but doesn't have to be them just as long as it's a really good show. I'm really happy with what they have done with the flash so far. I've watched the arrow and i don't know the comic character that well but have seen him in animated stuff and games and loved his character in those. They seemed to have him be funny and sarcastic in a good way. But the tv show he is just dark and brooding, and constantly with his shirt off, that's great at first and the actor portraying him is probably proud to show off his hard work and great abs, as he should be but It started getting a little tiring. I still watched the show do to the many supporting characters and I love, love the cross over episodes with the flash, now that dynamic works fairly well with the serious older brother type arrow and the cocky fun younger brother type from flash. But the arrow just needs to inject just a bit more fun or funny into the arrow character i think.

    I really find a shame that most people who worked on the character after Ditko were so determined to distance themselves from his original proposal. I don't think they had any obligation to agree with Ditko's positions, but by rejecting it outright they just throwed away one of the most interesting and fundamental aspects of the character. I still love the Denny O'Neil run, but I would like to see what a great writer could do with someone as complex as aVic Sage.

    Couple of things I’d want to add to the question if i got to write him, I’d make him the worlds greatest detective (cus bats is overrated) I’d make the origin multiple choice having lots of rumours spread by other characters talking bout him, maybe he has the new 52 origin being an immortal faceless man, maybe he’s an ex spiral agent maybe he’s that reporter from a few years back who was said to save that scientist and then went promptly missing and then maybe I’d give him a few unique abilities that are also multiple choice in how they work like the smoke that comes of him is that mystical or some gadget ? To write the question effectively the reader must never know, similar to classic pulp hero the shadow his presence is ever known throughout the story even when he’s not on screen, allow for his identity to be well ...up for question let them know the character but allow him to be an unknown in the story

    He is part of the trinity of sin who were three sinners whose crimes were so bad they were brought in front of a court of wizards for punishment; Judas became the phantom stranger, Pandora does whatever she is doing but the last guy is not told to the audience and he forgets everything about himself and his face melts away and he is the new 52 question.

    if there was ever a movie made about question jeffery combs should be in it and use the question voice he used in justice league unlimited cartoon if they use another actor to play victor sage jeffory combs can play the question since no one can tell who's face is behined the mask when the actor turns into question thats when jeff takes over and uses his question voice to hide the actors voice so no villian in the movie can tell vic and question are the same person

      Yeah, And what's with DC turning him into some sort of fallen angel in
      'The New 52'?
      I loved Steve Ditko's original Question and Denny O' Neil's take on Vic Sage in the late 1980's and his presence in the DC Animated Universe.
      But this character in 'The Trinity of Sin' storyline? :-P
      From iconic Objectivist to some kind of mumbo jumbo pseudo triumvate of sin?
      I think Steve Ditko would likely have an ulcer at the very least and a coronary at the very most if he ever saw 'The New 52'.

      @@cha5 Yeah. Like the original question wasn´t all about politics. It only botters you when it doesn´t fit your own.

    • @cha5
      @cha5 5 років тому +2

      Gabriel P The original Question was written at a time when politics in comics or ‘comix’ ranged from far left to militant left, see Robert Crumb and Spain Rodriguez for instance,
      Ditko however was completely opposite that being that he was a Randian and was committed to his viewpoint , also see his Mr A comic from this same era.
      Whenever I hear people bitching about politics in comics these days I always feel tempted to show them a vintage Zap or an old EC comic, or an old Steve Ditko Mr A comic just for a laugh.😏

    Who do you think would do a good job as the Question in film or TV? My top choices are: Josh Hartnett, Jake Gyllenhaal, Keanu Reeves, Edward Norton, Christian Bale or Ryan Gosling.

    • @xerotolerant
      @xerotolerant 8 років тому +1

      Norton. Edward Norton. If not then Reeves. I guess Reeves would do the bland loner bit real well. Norton would get the charismatic eccentricity perfectly though.

    • @Anw4rr10r
      @Anw4rr10r 8 років тому

      lol I agree. Reeves also has a cool sounding voice but so does Norton. I think Norton would do a really good job because he was amazing in Kingdom of Heaven where he played the King of Jerusalem whilst wearing a mask the entire film so I'm sure he could pull it off.

    • @xerotolerant
      @xerotolerant 8 років тому

      Anw4rr10r My only tiny fear for Norton would be that his voice is a little high and not really smooth like Question's in the DCAU.

      My own personal would be Damien Lewis. It probably never would have occurred to me but he starred in a series named "Life" in which he played a character very similar to the Question along side Sarah Shahi whose character was similar to Montoya. There's even Rodor like character played by Adam Arkin.

    Ditko never really owned The Question. It was work for hire for Charlton comics and when the characters were sold to DC that company could do what they wanted to with them. Ditko went on to create Mr.A which was a continuation of the question with an even more extreme moral code.
