  • 1970 was the year of love with the actresses.
    - Jane Alexander playing a white woman torn between race relations and the lover of her life, a black boxer, in The Great White Hope.
    - Glenda Jackson playing an odd, dominating artist who seems to be obsessed with the idea of love, but doesn't much enjoy it when she has it, in Women In Love.
    - Ali MacGraw playing the quintessential love couple, a rich boy and a poor girl, in the amazing Love Story.
    - Sara Miles playing a young, wild eyed woman who marries a spinster schoolteacher out of desperation, only ending up falling in love with a solider in Ryan's Daughter.
    - and Carrie Snodgress playing a tortured and emotionally abused housewife who finds unexpected and doomed love with a gigolo in Diary Of A Mad Housewife.

Glenda deserved her Oscar, she was a force of nature in Women In Love.

This was a toss up between Jackson and Alexander, with Jackson having the slight edge. Both are great actresses, but imagine: This was the first people saw of Jackson on a national/international level and it was riveting! Jackson is one of, if not the most commanding actress there is, and was impossible to get away from in this film, and that's why she won. Sarah Miles and Ali MacGraw were good, but not Oscar worthy. Snodgress was the next best behind Jackson and Alexander.

Carrie Snodgress should have won it, but her previously anounced snubbing probably killed her chances!!!

this should of been Ali MacGraw's Oscar, she already won the Golden Globe for it, the Oscar should of been next. My rankings
WINNER- Ali MacGraw, Runner Up- Carrie Snodgress, 3rd- Sarah Myles, 4th- Jane Alexander, 5th- Glenda Jackson... why did you use the music monologue for Ali? There are so many great scenes you could of used. the fight in the apartment, the dying scene... so many

Interesting that you thought Jackson was the worse of the bunch and MacGraw was the best and that, winning the globe made her the favorite. Winning the globe did not make her the favorite. Back in those days, it was the least of the bellweathers, as the top critics awards were key (NY, NBOR and NSOFC and Later LAFC when they came on the scene).. My order would be the complete opposite of yours. I like Ali, but I've never seen her do anything Oscar worthy. Jackson won the National Board of Review, NY Film Critics and the National Society of Film Critics for her performance and that made her the favorite for the Oscar. Back then, winning those had way more weight than the globe. Note that George C. Scott also won each of those top critics awards, although he also won the globe. Remember, the globes have, for the most part, been more about popularity. Love Story was a huge box office hit, whereas Women IN Love was an art house film and nobody knew who Jackson was at the time, so of course, she was not going to win the globe from the Hollywood Foreign Press, but the Oscar voters knew better.
