I am surprised Hyundai made this video to FULLY convince me to never buy a DCT. Thanks for the honesty.
Why? I've been driving a DCT for nearly 5 years and never had such an issue. Just drive it sensibly and you'll not encounter any issues.
@@WillMorgan89 "Just drive it sensibly..." You said it! My car doesnt break down even when I DONT drive it sensibly.
@@raknoknak If you abuse anything mechanical its life will be limited. I can drive my car enthusiastically, but still take care of it and not have any issues. If you're after a car you can beat on day in day out and not have any issues then I guess you got lucky with the one you're driving.
@WillMorgan89 agreed, BUT... I have never seen any other transmission type be so sensitive to how it's being driven. Usually there's enough tolerance that you can be a little careless and still be able to drive the car normally afterward. Here though... heaven forbid you crawl in traffic or else you'll need to park the car.
People in places like india do not use Hyundais to have a scenic holiday cruising the hills. These cars are used to drive through traffic to work in rushhour and send kids to school. This video just told us to not do everything hyundai price point cars are expected to do in India. @@WillMorgan89
I have been using i20 dct for quite a while, i can say from my personal experience that the Gear box is good for highways and roads which has space to drive, for bumper to bumper traffic, you may end up heating the transmission only if you press the gas pedal around more than 60% suddenly so that no other vehicle tries to fit inside your lane or space between two cars, instead apply the gas for around 20-30% and the DCT is works well without heating up, but usually if there is a bumper to bumper traffic, i apply neutral if the car has to be still and if the car infront of me is moves but a very less distance, that means less than 2 or 1 metre, i usually put the transmission to D and don't apply the gas, the car automatically just moves ahead.
Thank you bro for advice
I am planning to buy Venue N Line DCT Petrol
The way you explained your driving style, it's nit a surprise the transmission is "bad" for you. Accelerating to 60% just to NOT let others creep in your lane tells me you might have temper issues in traffic. No wonder a dct is not good for you. You can't properly drive. It's not a competition.
Using venue dct, clocked 40k without a single alarm on all driving conditions.
Hi, Is the venue DCT gearbox working fine for you? Planning to buy it but confused about heating issues & future repairs.
I'm driving a 2022 Creta DCT and have completed 51000 KMs in little over 2 years. I drive almost 70 KMs daily in Delhi traffic. I have encountered the transmission heating issue two times while driving in completely jammed traffic in uphill mountains. Both the times, Fortunately the traffic eased just after the warnings and I was able to move ahead.

Bro have seen traffic in Indian cities! They all move less then 10kmph
With so much complications decided to go ahead with TC instead DCT...thank Hyundai for info!
TRQ CNTR is the way 2 go, reliable than DCT but better than AMTs or CVT
I thought the whole logic for going to automatic transmission is hassle free driving and don't have to think at all about clutch in bumper to bumper traffic or think about on right gear on highways . If this is how DCT works (any car vendor not specific to Hyundai) , With so many restrictions in place then i think manual would be far better option then DCT. Even AMT option (for amy car vendor) is better which shows some lag but at least it will be reliable and i don't have to bother about stopping car and other restrictions.
This why the rav 4 dont have this.
With DCT the mileage will be little better than AMT
AMTs have the same issue. They just don't tell you about it. DCT is refines AMT. CVT is the best option.
Sounds like the perfect worry free way to drive!

Used to own a 2017 Kia Optima with a Dual Clutch. It was straight up garbage! Slipped when taking off, etc. Got rid of it around 30,000 miles.
take note
not the transmission overheat warning
its the Dual clutch working hard and creates heat because of slow traffic and you keep chasing the car in front of you (bumper to bumper chase)
that dct is shifting early to 2nd gear to keep the car smooth but sacrificing the entire clutch system by slipping its clutch abd then they create heat okay.
better use sports mode and allow them to use manually
in bumper to bumper situation shift to 1st gear only so if you are running at 5kph the clutch stays fully engage
so it will not heat up
not halfway
i am using verna and it last long 208K kms before pulling it down and replacing the following
dct clutch sets
dct flywheel
dct fork
dct fork bearing 2 in 1
oil seals
Thank you so much for this tip. I live a densely populated area with bumper to bumper traffic going to work all the time, was constantly getting this message. Now I throw it into manual when I hit traffic and keep it in first gear. Never got this message again.
Dct are reliable just have to know how to use them regular oil change is a must when in traffic let the vehicles in front of you distance you about a car length then move forward u don't overheat the clutches let it warm up before aggressive driving and don't matter what the manual says change oil regularly change oil the first five thousand kilometers and then every twenty thousand kilometers after when climbing steep hill use sport mode and when overtakeing
I don't think everyone can afford $600 for the oil change bud.
@@anthonydavidson1637 oil changes are only 60-80$

Never a hiccup with the dct in my Elantra Sport, it can get jerky during stop n go situations but the Sport button fixes that.
Good tips.
If you have to drive In a certain way not destroy the transmission it's a manually controlled transmission not an automatic.
Keeping the vehicle in neutral is the optimal solution to prevent overheating, similar to the practice employed with manual transmissions.

#Hyundai If you are so confident of #DCT; then why not make a 1 to 1.5 hrs live stream of driving in bumper to bumper traffic in any major city of India in summer at peak hrs
After reading about DCT issues over different forums on internet; I dropped the plan of owning Hyundai vehicle with DCT. Now I need to look for different brand
@Sandeep Sarkar nothing wrong with the dct, cvt is just not fun to drive
It is not problem with Hyundai or Mercedes or any brand, problem is design. DCT is just not build for bumper for bumper traffic, it is build for continous drive with dynamic speeds. For slow traffic, and slow traffic uphil for example, avoid it at any cost and go with manual transmission or classic automatic with torque converter.
Suitability of CVT is well proven in India driving conditions. CVT will be better choice than DCT for city traffic driving.
@@Gr3eGo How is this specific to DCT. shouldn't this be same for all transmissions having gear. I mean DCT is have two manual transmission controlled by ECU but it is still manual transmission at it's core. I can understand this won't be a problem with CVT and TC since they work differently.
What did you end up buying instead for the last 3 years?
Hyundai, the problem with any DCT transmission is the people who don't know how to drive it. I am a mechanic engineer, I know how machines work. Average people are not like us to learn what a car can do. This is why most of the brand new tech goes to waste. My DCT in my Elantra is totally fine. I haven't had jerky feeling yet. I am at the mileage where I will be replacing the trans fluids so I can have smooth shifts as you said between the odds and evens. Good video but bad for consumer consumption. There is some care involved from the rest of us.

One doubt,do we have to take off the gas pedal while upshifting in DCT automatic mode ?
no
The TCU takes care of it automatically, just drive on.
If u took off the pedal from gas it will not upshift. Based on the speed and %of gas pedal pressed dct will decide to move up the shift or down.
No don't upshift no need only problem is people riding the clutch(in this case also at idle) at 0-10kmph that causes damage

Hello, may I please have a question: If I want to move from "D" to, for example, "R" or "N", do I need to press break all the time to do so? Talking about new Hyundai Tucson DCT.
Not needed. But you need to press the button in the Gear knob to shift between the driving modes.
But its always a good practice to do shift modes while pressing the brakes so that the car doesn't move around.

I've had three DCT's. The Carens I have now has ISG, this will stop the engine every time you pull up, which obviously saves the clutches, but hammers the battery and starter motor. I always turn the damned thing off and just shift to neutral to spare the battery and the starter-motor. Information Really worth

In reality... If you ever seen the Dx7 Prime it's also a DCT.. the systems mounted on it was for in the twenthy century era...
Dual clutch transmissions aren't successful in Indian conditions. Heavy traffic, high ambient temperatures are all vices for DCTs. VW's DSG had its own issues, then Ford, now Hyundai and Kia.
If you must buy an automatic, go for AMTs if you're in the economy segment or your rugged, plain old Torque Converters in the upper segments. CVTs are reliable too, but not 'fun'.
Useless comment, KIA 7DCT rocks!!
There's one big problem in your comment. AMT is exactly the same. It is a dry clutch automated manual just like dual clutch. Just that it doesn't have 2 clutches and 2 shafts for odd and even gears.
@@operatora588 Agreed. Much, MUCH simpler mechanism though and much easier and cheaper to replace.
Even when highly stressed, an AMT will heat up only as much as your simple manual transmission does in dense traffic. Even if it does 'break', it won't be some incomprehensible, complex issue that leaves the workshop staff scratching their heads as it does with these under-developed and untested DCTs.
No one better than VW when it comes to dual clutches. Their DQ200 AND 250s are plagued with issues in India. I personally won't trust a dual clutch transmission unless it's a PDK.
@@sarthaksingh5237 I think AMT should heat up as much as a DCT under traffic conditions. When crawling in traffic, what happens with the clutch in a DCT and AMT is exactly the same and both are dry clutch. Just that the warning system is absent. The clutch is engaged with electric/hydraulic actuators. The problem is what those actuators do cannot be as efficient and quick as the manual clutch operation done by a driver. So there will be unnecessary half clutch driving. When we drive manual, we know what's gonna happen next looking at the traffic in front of us and we engage the clutch only when needed and fully disengage it in advance before fully stopping. But DCT/AMT know to fully disengage the clutch only when the brakes are fully pressed and the car comes to a stop.
@@sarthaksingh5237 There is a solution to this problem and Acura has launched it's 8 speed DCT with this solution. The Acura's DCT has a torque converter just for launching the car. The launch and creep function works with a torque converter in 1st gear and as accelerator is given and speed increases, torque converter is mechanically locked and it works just like any other DCT. It'll also give extra torque at launch. It's a brilliant idea.
How to try to avoid overheating - don't buy DCT
Just buy a normal torque converter and be happy

Recall #149 took care of the heat problem.
Cz AMT and CVT have poor pickup from idle condition.
DCT offers faster and most accurate gear shifts. Among its major limitations, DCT vehicles offer low fuel economy than manual. Shifting to the higher and lower gears in this technology is seamless but can become noisy and sometimes rough for the gear-shift. If you feel the loss of power while driving in hills or critical overtakes in a highway, you can just downshift in a wink of an eye. It gives you quick acceleration power than AMT or CVT.
You should explain with so practicals and examples....
If DCT has so many known issues, why Tata is bringing DCT in Altroz?
Tata DCT is wet type.
How you are saying bringing to N in idle as a tip to prevent overheating of DCT!? DCT is supposed to disengage once the vehicle comes to halt with the computer controlled mechanism. Then what way bringing DCT to N position prevents overheating!?
Damn good point.
