What is the history of Hollywood reanimating deceased actors in films, from Bruce Lee, Brandon Lee, Paul Walker, Carrie Fisher, Peter Cushing, Harold Ramis, and now Christopher Reeve and George Reeve in The Flash (2023)? Erik Voss breaks down what laws are on the books to govern this process, the technology used to do this, and whether we've crossed an ethnical line with titles like Rogue One, Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker, Ghostbuters Afterlife, and The Flash.
Welcome to The Deep Dive, a new channel in the New Rockstars Digital Network. Hosted by Erik Voss, The Deep Dive is the destination for more pointed media investigations. From full seasons of Marvel streaming shows to cult classic films, Erik will dig to the roots of the hidden agendas beneath every title.

I think, like Erik said, it depends on the context and the reasoning. Ramis in Ghostbusters: Afterlife is one where, for me, the technology was used in a positive and moral manner, giving the character of Egon a proper send-off while also giving Harold a chance to be honoured too.
The Flash cameos on the other hand were superfluous from the get go, adding nothing to the movie. And even though he's not dead, the apparent use of Teddy Sears' face without his knowledge is another low blow.

@@pst5345 Agreed: we can all have subjective takes on what WE think is respectful use or not - I agree with TheThird on (subjective opinion) the use of Harold Ramis in GB: Afterlife. It came over respectful and looked good. A nice goodbye... but that is what I think, and what TheThird thinks... it's not close to what Harold himself thought as we don't know: he's dead. There needs to be cut and dried law made regarding this, especially since VFX and AI generated imagery is coming on so far and so fast.

Here’s the connection between this topic and Spielberg. It’s like in Jurassic Park when Ian Malcolm says, “your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should” which is appropriate for this topic given that visual effects artists sometimes are so fixated on the idea of improving their craft that they don’t really stop to think about whether it’s appropriate to do some of the things they have done.

I wonder what Carrie Fisher would have made of Leia's digital resurrection. She always had a love/hate relationship with the whole thing and the fame and attention it brought her, seemingly often feeling like she didn't own herself; "I'm not famous, Princess Leia is famous; I just happen to look like her", and her oft-repeated "We had to sign away our likeness so now, every time I look in the mirror, I owe George Lucas a couple of bucks."

I think the two major components that make it acceptable are; “Was the actor alive for part of production?” and second “Are they a critical character that can’t be written out in any way?”
Examples like Paul Walker fall into this because it would’ve been super weird if either Brian was in like half the movie, or wasn’t in it at all with no real explanation.
There are a couple times where it’s done properly and outside the two things I mentioned, like Egon in Ghostbusters, where they don’t make it necessarily a big deal, and it ends up looking good/believable.

Paul Walker is the perfect example, as you highlighted and I agree as a huge fan of Mr. Walker that was handled incredibly respectfully and beautifully. It also had the full support of his brothers and family ... so much so that his brothers jumped in to help bridge the gaps in performance. -- It is wrong to create new performances for new projects that the actor never had the possibility of having intent. -- Thank you Erik!! I think some actors have already started thinking about and making these decisions, so that this exact argument isn't brought up later. James Earl Jones recently signed the rights to his voice as Darth Vader over to Lucasfilm/Disney, so that they can digitally generate it in future projects if needed. He's clearly given consent, and whether or not we like the idea it's his right to do so. I'm sure other actors are weighing the pros and cons too. I feel like the studios and filmmakers should have the respect to not do a cameo like in the The Flash if they can't get the actors' consent. They apparently created a wholly digital likeness of golden age Flash that 'just happened' to look like Teddy Sears, so I don't see why they couldn't have done something similar for the Superman cameos. The obvious assumption is that they wanted to cash in on that nostalgia, and that's the bigger problem for me. They're monetizing these actors after their death, and I have to assume that minimal money would go back to the actor's estate or family. In George Reeves' case there isn't even anyone to give that money to, as far as I know. So this is studios looking at easy profit with as little investment as possible, not having to pay actors so they can save a few bucks.

Watching this, and seeing the footage of "Game of Death", made me remember something. Not that long ago, I was discussing Fake Shemp with someone. Shemp Howard of The Three Stooges died on November 22 1955. The Three Stooges were still contractually obligated to complete four more shorts to fulfill the contract. To complete these shorts, new footage of Moe and Larry were shot, and prior footage from shorts starring Shemp were recycled. All new footage of Fake Shemp, played by stand-in/body double Joe Palma, was either shot from behind so you can't see his face, or had Joe moving quickly to also obscure his face. "Game of Death" uses the idea of a Fake Shemp, with two stand-ins, played by Kim Tai-jong and Yuen Biao. That cardboard cutout, they didn't even try to hide that it wasn't Bruce. Fast forward to today with the CGI examples like you've shown, and it's essentially the modern day Fake Shemp.
When I first saw "Game of Death", the two body doubles and the cardboard cutout face wasn't what angered me. It was the fact they used actual newsreel footage from Bruce Lee's funeral procession to cobble together a scene where Bruce's character fakes his death. Regarding ethics, I can go with Paul Walker and Harold Ramis being done in CGI. Their absences should be acknowledged and get a respectful sendoff. I like that they put Christpher Reeve and George Reeves into "The Flash" with the multiverse scene, but it was made so poorly that I'd say it's disrespectful. Carrie Fisher and Peter Cushing was simply a cash grab with nostalgia glasses. But using Bruce's funeral footage the way they did I'd say is definitely unethical.

This is one of those tricky topics. I personally think it's okay when it's done in a small capacity and it lends itself to an overall story. I don't think it's exploitive because they are thinking about the character first. Much like Tarkin playing a major role in Rogue One, and at the end of RO they had to bridge the gap between that story and A New Hope. Again, it's primarily about the characters rather than exploiting likeness.

    • @BoneAnubis
      @BoneAnubis 11 місяців тому +2

I agree, I think Tarkin is the perfect example of where it being a major role within the universe makes sense but the sequel trilogy Carrie Fisher one I saw as a way to say goodbye to the actress & her most famous role, though there would have been the option for them to write in the story that Leia died from the grieving over the loss of her brother between the two films. I think when it’s done in a small capacity as you say & it’s done with respect then it’s a good thing but if it’s done for the sake of a cameo for no logical reason then it becomes an issue such as the Christopher Reeves example as that could be seen as “exploiting” the dead actor for a “wow” moment

I'm actually quite excited to see Christopher Reeve appear as Superman again. Ok so it's not really him, but if it's done sensitively with a real effort to capture the soul he brought to the character, like they did in Ghostbusters Afterlife, I think it will be quite an emotional moment for me.
Since I'm of a certain age, for my money, no one has ever played Superman better than Christopher Reeve. He really brought that pure of heart, overgrown boyscout soul to the character. He was heroic but humble and gentle. I think this was Christopher Reeve's personality shining through, and was perfect for the character. No one else has managed to play him this way as successfully.
I had always hoped to see him play Superman again and I remember being devastated when he was injured and paralysed. Such a shocking thing to happen to basically the person who, to me, when I was a kid, WAS Superman as far as I was concerned.

If this is to happen, the deceased actors should have been enthusiastic about their character, get full permission from the families of the dead, pay the families well, and make sure the cgi isn’t shitty. Imagine the outrage of when Shuri took the Heart Shaped Herb, Chadwick Boseman showed up in a poor cgi model, smiled at her, and she went back to real world. People would be pissed. Cgi cameos of dead actors I feel like will only lead to a more dangerous era of cinema, where actors who are dead are completely brought back for roles after death with cgi and ai. I hope these cameos stay as camoes, and are done with respect and care for the family of the dead.
