There's a term that kept popping up in my head: glass cliff. Currently it refers to women of color (WOC), but initially was coined for women in general or other minorities, when they are placed in a leadership position, but the corporation provides no support for them. It tends to happen when there is a crisis, so typical candidates do not want to take the leadership position because they are concerned it is doomed to fail, but the minority candidate goes for it because they assume it's their one opportunity to reach for the position. The corporation is more willing to take this minority candidate, because their usual candidates don't want it, it grabs them publicity/diversity points, and if the minority candidate fails, they can allow folks to blame the 'diversity hire'.
That's really awful man it's all just for publicity really they don't actually believe in the diversity it's just because they are being pressured into it
I think that's exactly what happened to Theresa May and Liz Truss, as Prime Ministers and Conservative Party leaders in the UK. And now the Party is trying to rack up more "diversity points" by backing Rishi Sunak. (The crisis began with the Brexit referendum, well before Theresa May became PM.)
Thank you for getting these experts--the quality of the producing team for The Daily Show Team is that they find experts who are not only well, expert, but also engaging and able to connect with humanity and humor. Tons of props goes to Roy Wood, Jr. for studying up and asking the right questions. Praise, praise, praise!
I get your enthusiasm but ... How hard is it to find someone like Burleson? He's everywhere. He's managed to get his face in everybody's living rooms practically round the clock. And as far as Colette Smith, she was the first black women! and probably only one of three. She was game to go, free to speak and of course she's going to have a personality that's engaging and fiery. That was part of her job. That's built in. Roy Wood is a celebrity. Celebrities have it that way. I doubt its not that hard once you've carved out a niche for yourself. They're no rocket scientists.
This is one of the most enlightening and extremely needed interviews I’ve seen in a very long spell. The Q&A was literally a Wimbledon Classic on the 8!!!! Much appreciated!!!!
Nate...thanks for the info on Frederick Douglass "Fritz" Pollard. The rabbit hole you sent me down was AWESOME!! I learned a great deal about "Negros" in the APFA. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!!! Great podcast gentlemen!!
5:35 I have a predominantly auditory recall. I remember hearing Rush Limbaugh give a reserved and "sober" answer as a TV commentator in the '80s. He said Randall Cunningham was a player that was being reported as better than he was by a left-wing conspiracy running the media because of the desire to promote the idea that a Black player might master the intricacies of quarterbacking in NFL football.
Great interview! The irony is that the inclusion and equity issues are there outside of football. I'm in business and I'm a black woman. Same issue with BS diversity pools and all- white hiring.
#RoyWoodJr, I love these Behind the Scene Episodes! I really thought you were going to be the new host! I've started watching more of your stand up comedy! Stay Hilarious!!! I'm a true fan😊🙏
That would be a huge waste of time for black candidates. The NFL coaching realm is small, but it isn't that small. How would any black candidate know that an organization were serious about having them as a head coach if they were being interviewed for every open job?
I'm am was a BIG time Giant fan, I'm 60 but I never realized how racist the team I loved for 2 thirds of my life is and was! The Giants don't ever select and ride with any Black Quarterback!
Dont even get me started on my Giants. They are like the pre 60's RedSox not hiring black players when it comes to Quarterbacks. I'll be shocked if they ever do it in my life time.
Roy is hilarious and EXCELLENT at this shi. He has to be next in line at TDS. And about the ep great interviews but you can def tell coach didn't wanna say too much since she's in the shi
It's not just about checking the box. Black coaches are often set up to fail. Flores. Lovie Smith this year. Lovie Smith was fired because the Texans don't have the #1 pick. #nocap
To Roy's point about recent coaches getting a quick hook, as a long time Steeler fan it crossed my mind that IF Mike Tomlin had gone1-13 in his first season, as Chuck Noll in fact did in his first year in 1969, the Rooneys would NOT have gotten rid of him - because: they did their homework on Tomiin, as they did with Cowher and Noll, AND they placed faith and trust in them to do things the right way, through highs and lows.
Hats off to the late Dan Rooney who created the Rooney rule and lived it. Mike Tomlin was a young Black defensive coordinator in his first season with the Vikings and the 2nd minority candidate that was interviewed. He blew them away in the in interview and even though everyone knew it was Russ Grimm or Ken Whisenhunt, coaches on Bill Cowher's staff, who where going to be the hires, Rooney picked Tomlin. This hire was based on the interview and not the color of his skin, which Dan Rooney hoped others would do.
I agree with her. yeah the Rooney rule does kind of have it's place even though they'll find loopholes in it but at least it is a start to say well we're now considering coaches of color for different positions whereas if they didn't have it at all you wouldn't have that that she wouldn't be the first black female NFL coach or maybe she still would either way but you wouldn't see as many coaches that are black in those assistant head coaches positions or any head coaches really who are that diverse. So it does have its place it just needs some major tweaking

You're right about that because black owners would only hire black coaches and as racist as that is no one would be allowed to say anything about it, yet there are many black coaches in the NFL many I listed above where the owner of the team is white and yet they hired a black coach, funny how that works.
If anyone has put something together on the lack of black quarterbacks in the NFL i will gladly watch that. does anyone have a link? Hope that question doesn't hurt anyone woke people's feellings. My favorite black quarterbacks of all time are , Daunte Cullpeper, Waren Moon, Randall Cunningham. Any one care to venture a guess what my NFL team is?
This was so well done, and I'm not even a big football fan. Thanks Roy. (As a baseball fan, I loved your exposé of the liberal racists at Fenway Park several years ago.) "I was close, so Imma keep pounding..." when Coach Smith said that I couldn't help but think of Mandela Barnes, who got closer than Russ Feingold to beating Ron Johnson for US Senate in Wisconsin. I have no idea what he's doing now for income. Barnes is qualified to serve our country at a very high level, more qualified than several of the white people in Biden's Cabinet if you ask me. Why do we need white folks at all? Their population in less then 20 years will be sinking into minority status and their a global minority with Europe being the highest aging population with low birth rates . Literally going into extinction. With this rate they are enviably headed into -they should be excluded as they won’t represent anywhere NEAR the masses
Yeah Nate, you were just as clutch as Carter and Moss! Just saying! Take the reigns, like you are fighting for a half/half ball. You highlight the potential coaches. You have the platform!!! Yeah Ni**as!
Instead of Social Media being so focused on why coaches aren’t reflective of the players’ racial makeup (70%), the question could be flipped: “Why are 70% of players black, when only 12% of the US population is black ?” If anything, blacks are •over• represented in the NFL (& the NBA) Any reply that suggests that black players comprise 70% of the teams because blacks work harder, are superior athletes, or are funneled through an “athletic track”, then that •exact• same logic could be twisted to say that “non-Black coaches work harder, or are of superior intellect, or are funneled through a “coaching track”. So….instead of black coaches suing to be reflective of the racial makeup of players, then perhaps non-black PLAYERS should sue to be reflective of the US population: teams should have non-black players comprise 88% of the teams🤔
"How are you supposed to turn around the franchise in a year???" Coming in: Brian Daboll (2022), Sean McVay (2017), Kevin Stefanski (2020), etc... You know you have the right coach on year #1, regardless of race
Quit your Crying ! All team owners are Billionaires , all team players are Millionaires . The Poor Taxpayers ( suckers ) pay for your Playground ! 2/23
Black owner? Yeah yeah ok... but you know its gonna be a hood team. It NOT gonna be KC or Dallas... its gonna be a team no one wants like cleveland. LOL
You mean to tell me that the teams are 70% black already and that's not enough representation? You already have almost every position locked down and now you want the coach spot too. Leave us something....
In addition, instead of Social Media being so focused on why coaches aren’t reflective of the players’ racial makeup (70%), the question could be flipped: “Why are 70% of players black, when only 12% of the US population is black ?” If anything, blacks are •over• represented in the NFL (& the NBA) Any reply that suggests that black players comprise 70% of the teams because blacks work harder, are superior athletes, or are funneled through an “athletic track”, then that •exact• same logic could be twisted to say that “non-Black coaches work harder, or are of superior intellect, or are funneled through a “coaching track”. No it’s actually vice versa. A white mans on tv said the white owners of these teams hire his own as coaches even if they are mediocre soley based on feeling more connection with his own(you can even UA-cam it). That’s racism and exclusion. I never heard of a black coach who I’m sure was a excellent player himself turn down the job. It’s not obvious exclusion that’s taking place here as well as many other jobs black folks are excluded from. Black players are the reason why any of this can happen. It’s time for these men to boycott this slavery system redressed up as the NFL and start their own leagues. Whitney needs them not vice versa
@@agua9999 did you even read the statement it said black men don’t want the headache of being HEAD COACH. We already know they hire black players because frankly that’s where all the talent and skills they exploite come from. The racism is they EXCLUDE BLACK COACHES and NO BLACK equity or ownership of a league that wouldn’t exist without the black players.. the very exact people they depend everything on. NO PLAYERS NO GAME
You guys are great and so understandable in explaining this issue and I am a 70 year old white woman who doesn't follow much professional or college football. Is the problem that a high percentage of black fathers tend to not participate much in the upbringing of their children?
Lack of diversity in NFL coaching...wow what a big problem in a league where some 70-75% or whatever of the players are black. Do you whine about the lack of diversity on the field as well?
Just make the money and get out. Buy your own business and hire who you want. Start at the high school level, progress to the college level, defensive, offensive, special teams coach, offensive line coach, defensive line coach. Everyone won’t be a CEO or even a department head.
66 comments, Comedy Central is shattering it’s get woke go broke glass ceiling. Look how unhappy this guy looks and sounds while recording this content..
What about the lack of white players? Should we make the playing roster 50/50 like coaches? There's a shockingly low number of white running backs and that's very veery concerning
1, there is no historical ban on white players playing anywhere, 2. high violence sport positions, RB, BOXING, are usually populated by lower income levels willing to endure the associated Risk and pain, 3 I can make a scientific bone density argument, (Nordic vs Savannah, ) which is why We Blacks struggle swimming, Making light of this REALITY, in light of history, is frankly insulting,
Sure. If they are just as talented as the players of color. But if 70% of players are black; and 100% of coaches are ex players; then 70% of coaches should be black. But I’m all for making it 50:50 players if you agree that team owners can be 50:50 also
Black owner? Yeah yeah ok... but you know its gonna be a hood team. Its NOT gonna be KC or Dallas... its gonna be a team no one wants like cleveland. LOL

I’m grateful for the eye opening explanation, and appalled that it’s a situation common enough to have its own term ..ugh

Love you Roy! REALLY love Coach Smith...especially her comments about the cheerleaders. She needs to "say it LOUD!"
Not a traditional sports fan, but what a powerful conversation. Lots of great discussion about what it really means to have fairness in sports.
I don’t even like football, but this show is so stinking important!
Great Show! Hey Roy, Nate, and Soror Smith❤️🐘!!
Enjoyed this show with my Soror Colette V. Smith and Nate Burleson. The questions and answers were thoughtful and insightful.
Well Collette is on the ball! Dayum! No nonsense, insightful and beautiful! Tell her a Comptonian approves!
Great post. ✌
For the first time ever, I was able to listen to two grown men talking about ... SPORTS! Thank you for finally making the topic of football palatable!

What would have happened, if the Rooney rule had asked to interview all eligible black candidates rather than one?
That would be a huge waste of time for black candidates. The NFL coaching realm is small, but it isn't that small. How would any black candidate know that an organization were serious about having them as a head coach if they were being interviewed for every open job?

As long as nobody gets the idea of hiring H. Walker, I am ok ....
H Walker will never be hired for a coaching job in the NFL because NFL teams are more demanding about competence than the RNC.

Ever since the Rooney Rule, the number of black head coaches has DECREASED. It’s only backfiring.

Nothing was worse than firing Jim Caldwell from the lions after 3 years- 11-5. 7-9, and 9-7, for Matt Patricia, who absolutely destroyed the lions.
Great enter view l Gain a lot of knowledge

How come No one dares to talk about how sports is predominatly dominated by black men?
And don't forget to add black owners!
Now do we just give the black guy millions of dollars to buy the team or how does that work in your fantasy exactly?
There would be more black coaches if there were more black owners.
You're right about that because black owners would only hire black coaches and as racist as that is no one would be allowed to say anything about it, yet there are many black coaches in the NFL many I listed above where the owner of the team is white and yet they hired a black coach, funny how that works.
Steve Wilkes! Shout-out App State baby!
As a white adult male. Black/colored people (I hate the term) this is just upsetting.

3) We can get named head coach
4) Offensive geniuses (QB Whisperers) coveted by ownership (coached 6 AA, been one twice
5) we demonstrate cutting edge offensive theory, It was WACKY when I led the US with it (2009),
Now McVay and Shanahan are GENIUSES for running similar system less well
Bienemy is successful in a pass offense, WAITING
6 ) waiting to be allowed to participate in pass offense,
7 ) we were allowed to be in charge of offense (intelligence, reliability, the teams (JOHN WAYNE) Hero
8) we were allowed to be in charge of defense ( effort, discipline)
9) We were allowed to lead the team MLB,
10) We were allowed to be the majority of the team
11) we were accumulated to neutralize the effect of the OTHER teams black player
12) we EXCELLED

The racism is they EXCLUDE BLACK COACHES and NO BLACK equity or ownership of a league that wouldn’t exist without the black players.. the very exact people they depend everything on. NO PLAYERS NO GAME
You guys are great and so understandable in explaining this issue and I am a 70 year old white woman who doesn't follow much professional or college football. Is the problem that a high percentage of black fathers tend to not participate much in the upbringing of their children?
@Mary the lack of fathers raising their children is a false narrative and it has nothing to do with this conversation.
Mary, do some research before you let your racist bigot flag fly
Imagine being a millionaire and still crying racism lol I wish I was that oppressed
you can still be a billionaire and be oppressed. oppression isnt always about money. it is about respect or lack thereof.
Lack of diversity in NFL coaching...wow what a big problem in a league where some 70-75% or whatever of the players are black. Do you whine about the lack of diversity on the field as well?
Do you require someone to explain this issue to you?
@@eme.261 Please blackwoman-splain it

Shout out @85southshow!
Just make the money and get out. Buy your own business and hire who you want. Start at the high school level, progress to the college level, defensive, offensive, special teams coach, offensive line coach, defensive line coach. Everyone won’t be a CEO or even a department head.

Ron u are better than this. It’s disappointing
What about the lack of white players? Should we make the playing roster 50/50 like coaches? There's a shockingly low number of white running backs and that's very veery concerning
You kind of missing the point sir. It’s not about making things equal, it is about making things fair.
@@vlpmontyyay9488 what an incredible response to someone who was trying to troll
@@vlpmontyyay9488 do you think teams pick coaches and spend tens of millions of dollars on them based on the color of their skin?
1, there is no historical ban on white players playing anywhere,
2. high violence sport positions, RB, BOXING, are usually populated by lower income levels willing to endure the associated Risk and pain,
3 I can make a scientific bone density argument, (Nordic vs Savannah, ) which is why We Blacks struggle swimming,
Making light of this REALITY, in light of history, is frankly insulting,
LOL
