I know exactly how this comes to be. I lost my husband of 23 years 6 months ago I never had children of my own he had 2 when we married. The things we built and collected over the years don't matter anymore. We were so proud to build our own house ourselves, and now I am surrounded with his image in every corner. It is so hard to care about something when the best part of you is gone. It feels like I'm just awaiting my turn. So sorry to be such a sad sack, but the first ten minutes brought me to tears.

Oh Becky, your post made me so sad. I know exactly how you feel. Losing the love of your life is horrible. Your not being a”sad sack” your just being human, hopefully you have people around you who can soften your loss just a tiny bit. These videos are always so enlightening into how as human beings we collect material things and gladly surround ourselves with them but at the end of the day it is the story of the people that is most important. Take care sweetheart. Surround yourself with the friends and family who can help you rejoice in your late husband’s life after all he must have done much much more in life than pass away !

I've held back until now. I've watched hundreds of explore videos and it is true...the children grow up move away and then a spouse passes and you have a shell you call home. Nothing prepares you for the feelings of having your memories of them stare you in the face day after day. You end up in a dark place if you have no one who cares. So the dishes don't get done dusting neglected and then you too pass. Go out and live life ...don't collects things just memories.

The bowl and jug in the rooms were for "washing" before bed and in the morning, the jug would have warm water in it and you would pour it into the dish and use a washcloth to wipe over your hands, face, neck, armpits and feet when showers weren't a thing, and people would bathe only once a week because there wasn't running hot water they'd have to boil water on the fire to fill a bath then usually the whole family would take turns in the same bath water (yuck) sooo the jug and bowl were essentially for washing in between baths that's why each room had one cause you'd just do it in your room not the bathroom... weird and gross but that's what they had to do back in that era. I hope this helps answer that for you 😉

I can remember the year of my first bathroom , and even an indoor toilet, maybe 1968/9. Previously the toilet was a shed down the road over a hole in the ground. Some kind soul ripped up squares of newspaper to use as loo paper and stuck them on a nail. If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown nip into town.

The evolution of aging and loneliness. You can tell it like many you show were once immaculate. Im watching my parent go thru this exact thing. The house was always spotless and immaculate ant as we all moved away they slowly start hoarding things and stop cleaning from old and tired and a bit sad and lonely. It slowly everyday looks like this and they don't want help they don't like feeling a burden. Or their lifelong mate passes away and they slowly give up and stop cleaning and they start compiling everything

This is exactly what I have seen in the elderly . I am now having health problems and there are days I am unable to do my daily work on keeping my house spotless. I also inherited many things from my parents and in- laws that I didn’t need but it hurt to let them go. I am now in the process of letting things go so my children don’t end up having to be overcrowded in their homes. I’ve realized we can’t always keep things but I will sell or donate the things . This is so sad to let all the beautiful furniture and collectibles just rot or be broken. Someone could love and enjoy having them. Also does the son live on this acreage? If he does looks like he would hire someone to auction off the valuables.

What a once fantastic home. And the story of the son living in a caravan on the lawn, that is just macabre. What could have happened that the situation came to this? It must’ve been something really dreadfully catastrophic for so much wealth to be seemingly abandoned. Maybe someday we’ll get an update from you Jess and Sam - with some sort of resolution we can live with - for now it’s like we’re all upset for the man and what ever went so horribly tragically wrong.
By the way I live in a beautiful place in a city. I have family and things went wrong. I live alone and this scares me. I won’t be hanging pigs and meat from the walls but I can’t care for myself. I hope/dream to be rescued by kind souls like you some day soon. It would be so nice to get the place, and myself returned to its original happy pleasant disposition. The shame and blame from others has left me in a state of protracted grieving and I’ve not fared well these past few years.
Something about this video has opened me up to writing it down here. That is good. I really think you two are very sweet kind souls and I wish you much happiness. I wonder how your exploration experiences inform your daily lives and thoughts of your own futures. Be well kids! XO

The old binoculars are opera or theater binoculars, they would be used when ladies went to a show, often used from the balcony of a theater. Some are made with ivory or shell. Creepy old place, weird where they hung the meat to age, possibly going a bit insane in old age. The rotating barrel was a butter churn, my Grandmother used to use one to make butter. The box with mesh on it is called a meat safe. They were placed somewhere cool to keep the meat fresh and fly free and were the forerunner of fridges. I remember Gran and our neighbour keeping stuff in them even after fridges became quite common. The Pfaff sewing machine would have been top of the range, my wife is a costumier and still buys Pfaff sewing machines. Where you get the marble topped table with the jug and bowl, this was called a wash stand and the jug was filled with water, hot or cold so you could have a wash in your room. This originated pre-bathroom. My Grandparents had them and we used them as they didn't have a bathroom and the bog was in a shed in the garden, merely a bucket with a seat on it and you chucked cold ash on top. Bath night was in a tin bath in front of the fire. They got their first inside toilet in about 1979. The strange little heater under the wash stand was a paraffin heater, it was lit and the dome glowed orange and it made a bubbling noise as the paraffin went down, they smelled lovely. Well done Sam and Jess, loving your explores, the old man will keep telling you what the old things were!!

You say Jess found a rotting sheep in the shed so they probably had sheep on the farm and they may have been selling the wool. I found this article that might explain the urine in the bottles: "During my research I discovered that in the 17th and 18th century, urine was valued for its cleansing power by the wool industry. Human urine was used for its bleaching and degreasing effect to wash wool. It was also used during dye processes. After using the urine as a scouring solvent for wool, it can easily be recycled as fertilizer for plants and algae." It's so sad that the son didn't sell some of the beautiful belongings of his parents before they rotted.

Great explore Sam and Jess, the roller thing for getting water out of your laundry is a “ mangle” my Grandad had a big one outside the backdoor and was still using it up until the early eighties , also the cupboard that you mentioned might be for chickens, I think might be a “ meat safe” again my Nan and Grandad had one. Your braver than I could ever be, escpecially with all the cob webs, it’s those that terrify me ( I’m literally terrified of spiders) I think hanging meat is some sort of means of preservation, it may have been “ salted” , be safe you two 🐾🥰🐾🥰🐾🥰🐾🥰🐾🥰

FYI: houses before mid 1900's had summer kitchens, used during hot months to keep the house cooler when cooking, some were connected to the house and some stood alone (to insure no threat of fire). also pay attention to photo's. it was a practice to take death photos of the deceased before burial. some were of the whole family with the deceased posed in a photo. they are interesting but creepy

The marble top tables are wash stands the jug would be full of clean water you poured in the bowl to have a nice wash after a long day as there would of been no bathrooms. The bathroom that was there was an old bedroom that got converted. The meat is all part of running a farm lol I love how you cringe at it lol. I'm sure it would of been sold or eaten by the farming family. Clearly the owner passed away before that could happen. 19:00 A pig’s head? Things just got very weird!
32:30 Pfaff is a German brand. I have one that the family bought in 1960.
What’s with the hanging meat? Are they air-drying it for preservation? I think it hasn’t worked!
34:20 No, not a piss-pot, but a wash bowl. You pour water into it from the jug and wash away!
34:37 Another wash bowl. The wash stands have a marble top because of the splashing when you wash.
34:42 That old b&w photo has been hand-tinted. I have several in the family photo collection.
What’s with the translucent skins hanging in that window? Are they making leather? Maybe that’s why they collected all those awful milk cartons - urine can be used to tan leather, apparently.

The urine (mixed with water) could also have been used to wash laundry if they didn't have soap or couldn't afford it. The pitcher and basin on the dressing table was used to wash the face, neck, and hands before bed and upon rising before getting dressed for the day. There would be a bar of soap and hand towel next to it. The chamber pot would be stored under the bed and emptied every morning. Other than the butcher shop and meat hanging everywhere, the house is beautiful!

The pitcher and bowl set you come across in a lot of these old homes are wash basins. They would have water in the pitcher, pour some into the basin. They would spot clean the face, neck, pits, and privates. Baths weren't used on a daily basis.

How Bazaar, strangest abandoned place to see in my mind to be sure! Loaded with so many priceless treasures and some of the weirdest rotting heads/carcasses hanging around. Your troopers to say the least, to stay and show us this unusual home!

The bed downstairs is an old hospital bed with what is called a trapeze to assist the person in moving independently as possible. The pink room had a heater on the floor and the wooden piece was to hang blankets on when not in use, sad the history that will die with this house as it falls in what a waste. I wonder if the son is still alive or his own family? Be safe, Vermont USA!
