Hi Mona 👋🏼 my blood type is O- and my husband is A+, and I would love more info on ABO incompatibility, Rhogam, etc. 😊 my first baby needed phototherapy, and my second baby’s levels were juuuust under the threshold so he ended up not needing phototherapy. So this topic is very much on my radar for any future babies! Thank you!!
I had to stop breast milk all together. Once I stopped it took about a week for it to disappear. She also picked up her weight. We were two points from having to go back to the hospital for another light therapy treatment. I was told to supplement feed and increase feeding while in the hospital when she was born. The jaundice It got worst! My pedi told me to stop breast milk and put her in light for 30 mins a day and give vitamin d drops in breast milk if I did use it. She is now healthy after a week. My girl was so bad her eyes were so yellow and she was loosing so much weight. I had jaundice when I was a baby and sunlight worked for me. Many drs and hospitals don’t support it anymore because they want you to use the equipment.
Dr Mona, thank u for this video! 2 out of 3 of my kids were diagnosed with breastmilk jaundice. I had to formula feed for 1-2 weeks each time and it was hard because I was so looking forward to a "normal" breastfeeding journey. My 3rd kid lasted about 3 months with jaundice because the peds office and specialist took sooo long to diagnose her.
Dra. mona my baby was diagnosed of jaundice, when she was feeding a milk she vomit it she is now in the hospital and already have IVIG FLUID AND phototherapy, any advice? Suggestions?
After women started getting sent home on the same day of delivery or only 3 days after sometimes the signs and symptoms of newborn jaundice got misseed which could help explain why for awhile infant mortality in the U.K. rose for awhile.
Hi doctor, my wife is 5 months pregnant and our local clinic gave her durobac tablets and we only found out now that durobac should not be used by pregnant women. Can it lead to jaundice and what are the early signs
When i gave birth last year, my baby had jaundice and they found out the first night. He was in the NICU for 20 days, longest 20 days of my life going back and forth to the hospital. It was blood incompatibly, is there a way to avoid from this happening on the next child?
So it depends on the type of blood incompatibility you had. If you have Rh negative blood, typically you will be given an injection called Rhogam during pregnancy to prevent your body from making antibodies against a babies red blood cells (if they are Rh positive). They will monitor your labs during pregnancy to assess risk. Here's a good site with more info: www.goodrx.com/conditions/pregnancy/abo-incompatibility#
That's not typical, check out this chart for more info! www.oneblood.org/blog/how-do-blood-types-work.html#:~:text=Just%20like%20eye%20color%2C%20your,type%20A%20or%20O%20blood.
So there's no one number that's considered normal. The total bilirubin level that is considered low risk will vary depending on the age of the baby (we expect bilirubin level to be higher the few days after birth and then to gradually decrease) and there are other factors that go into determining risk, like blood incompatibilities or prematurity so providers usually use a chart to plot bilirubin trends/assess an individual babies risk
Nope the majority can be treated with phototherapy that can usually be done at home or in a non-icu hospital setting like the newborn nursery. Only severe cases that need more complex interventions would need to go to the icu
Hi dr, My baby girl is 5 days old and she got jaundice and the level is 15 i went to the hospital they did blood work which was very painful now they want me to come back in 2 days but I didn’t want my baby to go through the blood work pain again i am currently breastfeeding her by pumping what can i eat which go through my milk to her and her jaundice get cured
Unfortunately checking levels through a blood draw is the most accurate way to make sure it is dropping into the normal range. There’s nothing you can eat to speed up the resolution of your baby’s jaundice, time is usually the best remedy but I’d follow the guidance of your clinician. Best of luck ❤️❤️
My baby is having jaundice since birth now he is 4 weeks old still he has jaundice doctors say breastfeed it will go it’s already 4 weeks I don’t see improvement and why blood group is O+ve and baby blood group is A+ve Iam really worried about his no recovery can you tell me what could be the reason it’s not reducing
There is such a thing as breast milk jaundice which typically starts after 4-7 days of life and is believed to be caused by factors in the mother's milk helping to reabsorb bilirubin in the gut. This kind of jaundice rarely needs treatment but does sometime take weeks to months to resolve and usually a provider monitors the bilirubin levels during that time to make sure they're not too high

This is true! Also why it's important to get into the pediatrician once you're home with your baby after delivery as they can check too
