I went to the Dan Gabel wrestling camp at Marquette University between my eighth and ninth grade, in the summer of 1975. He was in his prime. I won the shuttle run. They didn't have a wrestling tournament because there was too many people to manage it.
@Baldgol4 Cael sanderson. Just coached penn state to their second national title in a row. I don't know how similar cael's mindset is to gables, but he's turned the penn state wrestlers that were already there into monster wrestlers.
David W Cael...Okay...was going to say Cael seems to have been born blessed physically...but I am going to do more research...Wished he could have coached Cyclones to heights Nittany Lions reached!
@Thedarksecret1 Probably Sanderson, but mostly because Sanderson is easily Gable's peer but also outweighs him by 50 lbs. I'd be far more interested in seeing Dan Gable wrestle John Smith who I think would beat Gable.
You know the quote in this video "Russia tried to find someone who could beat Gable but they just couldn't." That reminds me of a pretty current USA Wrestler who is an Olympic Gold Medalist 3x World Champion and currently 58-0 Jordan Burroughs, and even Jordan Burroughs can't compare to Gable because Burroughs gets scored on.
@ah93704 @sugarlanskee8 Gable was/is incredible and I feel pathetic making any judgement regarding his wrestling ability because of how sad my own ability is. Although I "think" Smith would win, I can't know for certain. The question of "the best" is so hard to answer. It's like saying who is better Stanford, Oxford or Yale. They're so exceptional that even if you could find out the best, #2 is not noticeably far off. Regardless of who wins, it would still be a fucking incredible match.
@Kruezoraxe No, Dan Gable is the best college wrestler ever. Larry Owings psyched him out but was not "the greatest." Dan Hodge is second, then Cael and the Smiths. Wade Schalles is a tiny fraction from them as is Yojiro Uetake. Heavyweights are a different breed--will always favor Chris Taylor as the best of them
@twopoint Takedown. if you believe that jordan burroughs is champion so you wait for rio olympics. where sushil will show his strength and will defeat to jordan burroughs

Cael was blessed w/talent Gable "made himself" attain.

@ah93704
3 time NCAA champ, 2-time Olympic champ. Brother Pat Smith won 4 NCAA titles.
@GasparoContarini Who do you think would win in a match between Dan Gable v. Cael Sanderson.
