Dual-cab utes are HUGELY popular in Australia and the question on many buyer's lips is whether the can get away with buying an LDV T60 on the more budget end of the market, or are still better off spending a bit extra cash and sticking to the mainstream options like a Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger or Mitsubishi Triton.

Timothy Rigby's experience with LDV has put me off them for life. Even after forking out for the "rust protection" his repair quote for the rust was more than the cost of the car.
I'd rather get an old petrol Holden Rodeo & spend the difference restoring it than risking my money on an LDV.

@@cm-pk4kq I think you mean "Surf Club", because that's where he worked & the carpark he drove into. And if you actually read the judgment you'd understand how appalling the quality of the metal used in the construction was. Wheel studs made of cheese are a big red flag. Quality of critical components like wheel studs, bearings, clutches and so on are absolutely clear indications of overall quality and suitability for heavy work and long term ownership. I bet their used value reflects this. Great Wall sold their pickup in the UK for a while but sales ground to a halt from a slow start. Some vet practices bought a few locally but soon got rid of them. Now you just can’t give the ones that have survived away for toffee.

From a repairers point of view, avoid them like covid. Replacement panel/parts are hard to get for repairs. They are so hard to get that we won't repair them. Also rust is a big issue. Even newer ones have rust where they shouldn't. If you do have one, when you're cleaning it, clean the underside of the vehicle or you'll get rust in the chassis.

I looked at buying one these back in 2018 but was put off by the choice of engine and low power output. Instead of the LDV T60 I bought a Foton Tunland. I still have the vehicle and it's currently only done 45,000Ks. The Fotons are butt ugly but suffer far less problems than the LDV's. Mine has done quite a bit of 4wd work as I live quite close to Vic High Country. So far I've seen no rust issues that seem common on some of the other Chinese utes. I don't regret buying it as it's been quite reliable but they're now somewhat orphans as Foton seems to have abandoned our market with diesel 4wd utes. Only time will tell if ultimately something serious breaks and I have difficulty getting parts for it.

  • @kurtchapman7242
    @kurtchapman7242 7 місяців тому +5

Redriven is on the money with most points, the T60 is actually very capable off road, the "fuel flap opening when opening the drivers door" is caused by the drivers door wiring shorting out. It gets caught on the door catch and can short out any wire in that harness, totally random which wire it shorts. the intake hose split is typical like many diesel utes. Only other thing not mentioned was drive belt tentioner bracket prone to snap, Other then that he is bang on.

Great vid. I owned one of the first LDV t60s in Australia. Was looking for new 4wd ute that wouldn't break the bank. It was a leased vehicle so wasn't concerned about having it for more than 5 years. Firstly... not sure you mentioned this in your video (I may have missed it) but the very first T60's in Australia do not have the all round view camera. Only reverse. So if you want/need the all round view camera, make sure it has one. Additionally, you may be able to use the lack of all round view camera as a bargaining chip to bring down the price. Mine was a 2017, if that helps. Secondly, get someone to check the BCM! Make sure it is mapped correctly. I found the dealers who sold these were generally selling LDV's as a second brand and their mechanics new *&^% all. I returned mine five, yes FIVE times to fix a relatively minor BCM issue (power windows wouldn't work) and they totally screwed up the BCM because my LDV was the earliest model (i.e. no all round camera, no bonnet latch alarm and probably other things). They just could not get it right. Even at the end the wing mirrors wouldn't fold in but i could live with that. Thirdly make sure you have a mechanic who knows LDV's back to front. As stated in this video, they are a bit of a Frankenstein when it comes to parts. Lastly, just before i traded it in, some component I think it was a 4wd selection motor, you will probably know what it's really called, totally failed. It resulted in the 4WD warning light coming on... sometimes. Ended up costing about $800 to get fixed. Just would not go into 4WD at all. I wasn't a big 4wder so doubt it was wear and tear... probably just forget what it was due to lack of use. Maybe make sure that is ok before you buy. I did like the car but the lack of experience from mechanics and accessories just made it a poor experience overall. That is nothing to do with being a Chinese built car, moreso the lack of effort to support the brand by Ateco. Consequently, I now drive a BT50.

Been using this for the past year or so. 2022 model 2.7D. Company car. Primarily used the ute for long commutes (1000km+) weekly. Full load 200kg of stuff.
Has no power to cut through traffic (takes a hot minute before able to pass even with no load) infotainment is finicky at best. Android auto doesn’t work since it needs its own app to work. Apple car play works well enough. Surprisingly comfortable. Fuel for long commutes is manageable. City driving just outright sucks. Only issues that popped up was the tire pressure sensors bugging out and slightly noisier engine after 45k km.
surprised to see people complaining about rust since the one i used was exposed to very wet climate (malaysia raining season) had no rust so far.

Thanks Adam - Chinese utes come with in-built factory rust throughout the vehicle so in less than three or four years it’s going to be a drama for these utes and MG SUVs etc. I’m happy with my Hilux but totally understand budget constrained buyers but that rust will kill the initial cheaper purchase - Chinese tech is not tech but random eccentricity.

The hilux North American cousin Tacoma is notorious about frame rust. And there was a class action law suit against Toyota to force the replace the frame. I think the affect years ranging from 2000 all the way to 201x. I remeber the dealer was done replacing a frame( practically rebuild the whole truck) when I pick up my 2016 highlander hybrid back In 2016. After a premature caliper failure and need to fight to put the replacement work under warenty when the highlander was just 30k km on the clock. I no longer consider new model Toyota has much to do with reliable. Despite I went back to them for a mini van to replace thr highlander. But I already put aside some fund just in case something on the van go. I wish you best luck on living in the bubble and swallow the greif your hilux throw at you.

The Bluetooth issues are a pain trying to get CarPlay to reliably work. The seatbelt sensor beeping. The blind spot monitor gets dirt on the sensor so they think there’s something there. The backup sensors are a pain. Remove the tech it’s a good ute. Reminds me of my old 90s ute.

Rust seems to occur in door welds, chassis rails, around /under windscreen seals , etc, etc . Electrical issues & sometimes failures are due to sensors, wiring, power spikes etc , then there appears to be some relay issues , then the infotainment system has a habit of failures , odd ECU glitches, transmission issues ,occasional power steering glitches, the list goes on. Not every vehicle appears to get a problem but there are a lot that do. I've got a colleague who's still got his at a dealers now & its been there 4 months. Its got a major electrical issue which is shutting the vehicle down, but when a GDU is plugged into the vehicle its not showing anything. Fault codes are reset which seems to temporarily alleviate the issue & days later its stuffed again . Anyone still wanna buy 1 ??

Like my mechanic said 'if a company can afford to sell a new car for as cheap as they do the what's wrong with them?' which I completely agree with plus I'd rather a ute that has a decent support network over something like the T60.
To be completely honest if I had to get a cheap runabout ute I'd consider a Ssangyong Musso over the T60 even if it has the same sort of support network as the T60.
I dread too read that report about the rust to do with the T60 but I might read it later to see just how bad it is lol.
Honestly suprised by the T60 being today's review car and definitely an eye opener.

My neigbour had one, it drove ok but the rust stains were an eye sore. He sold it with a 6k loss, the car was a 2021 unit with only 8K on the clock. The ones I see all have hatch, hood or fender from other viechle with rear wheel well rust to hell. Being near the coastline is just as corrosivse as in Canada. Claim it rust free for a 23 years old viechle is more likely a big fat lie or it is a grade Queen. Heck, my 2008 wrangler has been rust proof every year with fluid film or krown. A couple of years ago I grabbed a GWM dual-cab ute with ~75,000 kms on the clock for only $7000. It has been brilliant. Most of the essential electronics works, but there is nothing fancy. I fitted an after market dash cam and reverse cam to it for peanuts. No rust. But the paint job was not good, so I sanded it down and re-did it myself. It is what it is, it is not a "penis car" but a work vehicle. The power is OK, even towing a trailer, and the 5-spd manual trans is great. It even handles and brakes OK.
The previous driver must have stood on the brakes all day, so I replaced the front pads and rotors and the rear shoes, and replaced and bled the clutch and brake fluids.
There is a special tool necessary to remove the front rotors from the hubs, and you can't buy one unless you are an authorized dealer, so independent mechanics-watch out. However, I reasoned that many components were knock offs or licensed from other vehicle makers, so I grabbed a Bluepac NPRS-12, and with a little filing down in a couple of spots it worked a treat. The power plant for example, is a copy of the Mitsubishi 2 liter petrol. The hubs are a Triton or Ranger copy, I forget which.
Everything is fairly rugged and basic, which I like. The tub has a thick tough plastic cover which is only mildly scratched and I have put everything in there, tools, rubbish building materials, sand mulch, old scrap metal with sharp edges.
The wheel arches have shitty plastic though, which degrades and falls off. No bid deal, at least for me.
The battery was a cheap after-market affair, so I replaced that. Manual windscreen wipers, so I get to control them when it rains. Some chrome bits had some mild surface rust. The wheel nuts and studs are not cheese, and tolerate the half-inch impact drill very well. As with most cars, the jack was average, but I always get I high spec jack and chuck it in the back anyway, when I get a vehicle.
Anyway, the GWM dual cab ute is a much better second-hand buy that this LDV model, but if you are going for a 4WD version, I have heard that GWM had some transfer-case issues in some of their earlier models.
My old rig does not overheat even under heavy load on a really hot day, so no worries there either. It is just one vehicle though. I can't speak for all the models of GWM out there. I could not even buy a HiLux or ranger or whatever, even with a odometer reading of 400,000 for anywhere near the price and condition of the GWM, so I am ahead there too.
