I recently watched the Korean supernatural romantic drama "Tail of the Nine Tailed"... One of the things that struck me about is is that the show depicts the heroine as smart, observant, and resourceful by having her make insightful conclusions about situations based on her established knowledge. Notably, it's not a superpower; in one notable case she makes such a conclusion that turns out to be incorrect. But I compare this to something like Atlas, or recent Marvel movies, that thinks "smart" is "everyone says this character is smart, they have 'smart' toys, everyone defers to them as if their opinion is extra-valuable"... While having said character behave every bit as stupidly as everyone else. When did so much of Hollywood forget how to write "smart"?

My favorite part was when JLo's character switched the mech to manual mode and she has to exert all her sweaty energy to physically run 😂. Clearly the people in charge of this movie have never seen a sci fi show or know how robotics work. One of the things that bothers me most are when the story takes us to another galaxy. Even if you allow the conceit of faster than light travel, filmmakers seem to have no grasp of just how far any other galaxy is - even Andromeda, which is closest. What, the Milky Way, with it's ~100 billion stars is not large enough for you? I know it seems a silly thing when compared to the many other instances of bad science (not to mention bad decisions... and bad dialogue), but it always seemed to me that writers just want to make it sound cool by going extragalactic rather than MERELY extrasolar.

@@davidgantenbein9362Same with German writers/editors. When they did the dubbing for Kirk‘s introductory words of the original Star Trek series, they not only took an unnamed narrator, but he also tells: “…boldly goes to galaxies which no human has seen before.“

Psst, you know what tipped me off about Atlas being a “genius girl boss”? Her hideous, out-of-place glasses. No, I’m just kidding, even a female-presenting auto-correct AI would toss that pair in the incinerator. (Why do people always assume that no one uses contact lenses in the future?) Ok, I made a post about “Atlas” and its crappy writing? Check. Chato reignited my faith in humanity during this modern bonfire of the vanities era? Check. Told Chato he’s great and send him warm and fuzzies?? ❤💜💙💛🖤 Great video, no one makes me laugh and relish critically dissecting stuff like you! After academia crushed my artistic spirit, you have nursed me back to witty health again! Seriously, please get a cable or streaming show, it could be my birthday AND Christmas present! Or just make more videos, I’d love to learn some advice on how to be a better critic/comedian. Anyway, this writing in “Atlas” is so bad….(how bad was it?) It’s so bad that I want to copyright MY idea to reboot “West Side Story” but make it about an AI and a marginalized person of color (to be specified later) so it can be shot down after 23 months stalled in production because it’s too heteronormative! …Is this thing on? Tough crowd, this is actually my iPad writing this, not a human, so y’all are just tech phobic racists! 🤣

I thought the film was meh (about a 2.5 out of 5), but it did have it's fun moments. Smith was really the best part, and the film would've gotten a lower rating if he wasn't in it. However, the main problem for me was that the film was rushed. As you stated, there was too much exposition at the beginning. In the first 5 minutes, we get all this news information about the rise of Harlan (which I believe was supposed to be a nod to Harlan Ellison. Heck, Asimov gets a mention in the film) and Mark Strong's character explaining some of Atlas' backstory. The writers could've had it that we see visual glimpses into her past and the audience would've understood it without all the unnecessary exposition.
They really should've made this as a mini-series (about 4 to 6 hours) and not an under 2-hour movie. If they had done that, they could've given Atlas (and even Harlan) more character development and we could've gotten more into her mind and backstory. This could've also helped to give Smith more character development, as we can learn more about how his programming functions and the relationship between he and Atlas would've felt more genuine.
Netflix also needed to pull back on some of the imagery and scenes they ripped off from other movies. For example, the scene where Atlas is briefing the soldiers felt like it was ripped straight off of "Aliens." I even expected one of the soldiers to say "How do I get out of this chicken-shit outfit?" Another example was when Atlas and Smith walked through the alien jungle. The whole time I was wondering if James Cameron was gonna sue the crew, because it looked ripped straight out of Pandora.
Overall, it had its entertaining moments, but it needed to be extended to a mini-series, and cut down on the exposition.
P.S. I still enjoyed Evangelion. No hard feelings.

As a mecha nerd you're probably already aware of it, but on the off-chance you're not, I can highly recommended Full Metal Panic. It's a somewhat strange blend of high school rom-com mixed with military mecha action. The rom-com aspect didn't do that much for me, but the action-adventure part of it is some of the most well-done, brutal, mecha vs. mecha action you're ever gonna see.

Reminds me of the movie Basic. Samuel Jackson was supposed to be this hard Ranger Special Forces instructor and in one scene you see him walking around with specialist rank(E-4) on his collar. I'd expect him to be at least a sergeant first class(E-7). You would think that at least one person on that set would have served in the military or been familiar with enough with military operations that they would have caught it.

My favorites are Macross Plus, Gundam Origin, and Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team. Just to give you my unsolicited list. Anyway I agree, the feel of realism in Atlas requires a different approach and logic than an animated film. It could have been interesting if they had leaned into the exaggerated feel of an anime. The mechs would have looked better and I would have found J.Lo's perfect hair on brand for the genre.
