How retailers quietly track your return behavior

- The latest crackdown on returns is only that latest effort by retailers to tamp down on return losses. Many major U.S. retailers have implemented third-party tracking software to track and block behavior that 'mimics' return fraud, unbeknownst to most shoppers.
If you deny my legitimate return, good luck with ever having me return to your store as a customer ever again.
Exactly!! No fancy science behind it. Just don't shop there anymore.
Girl you think they care 😭
They don't care. Recently one of the online websites that I use to buy items denied my return even if I have only returned 4 items out of 75 items I have purchased from them.
The only time I return items is when I buy the wrong size
If you ever have a return refused by a store, I don’t think they are making money off of you. Getting a return refused means you’ve returned things so frequently that the store is actually losing money doing business with you. Your statement is the action they want you to take. Most items that get returned aren’t put back on the shelf but rather damaged out.
I dont buy from companies that CHARGE me to return, charge restocking fees, dont give a 100%return no begging required. I refuse.
Just like every other policy, this too will impact only the genuine customer.. fraudsters will always find another way to trick the system
Thank you this is soo true
Heres a good way to circumvent this. Call the credit card company and dispute the charge, as they often have consumer protections that will cover you in the event that something like this happens to you.
I never returned anything for years ..not until I finally got sick of feeling ripped off..but until I literally just couldn’t afford to give my money away. Now, I return anything anytime it’s not worth the money I spent or unusable. It adds up and adds up and it is by billion dollar companies. It’s not like I in person purchased something and returned it.
I am honest about every single return. I notified Walmart that I didn’t receive a 6 pack of dog food then found it and contacted them to give the refund back..they didn’t take the refund back and told me to keep the product
Stop buying a bunch of crap you don't actually need lmao... that's how you save money. Crack down on your own impulsiveness. 😂
Walmart did this to me, and I find it wasn't based on my purchases vs returns and didn't look at why. There is ONE walmart in my town. It's awful, but I ordered from them several times a week. I work 6 days a week, have a family of 5 here, and am Mom taxi nights and weekends. I have very little time, so used their grocery delivery. With almost EVERY order, I got something expired, (liquid eggs once 6 weeks out of date) chicken, sausage, moldy (strawberries, tomatoes, beans) salsa so fermented it was bubbling, in addition to missing items. They refused to send out a fresh item and each time told me my only option was to open a return. This also meant I then had to make a trip to the store if it was something I needed ASAP. So after abut 6 months of this, they told me I may no longer order online due to return violations. I contacted them multiple times trying to explain why I had almost one return a week and that maybe they should talk to the store manager and not continually sell expired products. They didn't care. They had the nerve to tell me to pay another 100 membership under a different email! I spend at least 350/week on groceries and now just order elsewhere.
Stop being so lazy and go buy your own groceries.
@@millll111lllI You d** I'm not lazy. I work 6 days a week, 10 hours a day, have 3 kids, one with a disability which makes the shopping trips MUCH more time consuming, and I have kid activities multiple nights a week. It's not LAZY, it's called BUSY.
I recently moved. There were a lot of household items I needed to buy. Before heading out I made sure to measure certain areas so I stood a better chance at buying the right items for certain rooms. I still found myself having to do a lot of returns to Walmart, TJ Maxx, Target and Marshall's. Only once was I denied a return. This item wasn't "needed" but I wanted it. I bought the same movie from Walmart during 2 different trips. The reason given as to why I couldn't return the movie? She said the electronics area has a different return policy. This was the first time I'd learned of that because there's no signs stating such. I always pay with cash. 9 times out of 10 I'll let them give me the money back on one of their store cards, especially Walmart because I do my reg household shopping there anyway. I don't know. Maybe that's why I haven't been flagged 🤷♀️

Is this service available on eBay?? As a seller I want a blacklist of known bad actors so they are banned before they can cause problems.
As a Costco HQ Corp employee, it's my understanding Costco does not plan to modify their Double Guarantee; 100% refund on your membership or products you purchase. This comment is my own and not of Costco Corporation.
Dare a company refuse my return for no reason. Call my bank and request a charge back!
Story done .
Retailers do everything but provide a friendly and efficient customer service experience.
Now that everything is locked up at Walmart it can make getting exact items more difficult. I had a helpful employee track down what we thought was the correct phone charger I needed only for it to be wrong. I live over an hour away and wasn’t aware it was wrong until I got home. Upon trying to exchange it for the correct charger they told me since it was an electronic related item they could not exchange it. I didn’t have my receipt which left me feeling pretty stupid. However, I did remember the exact date and time I had purchased the item(with cash). I’m sure I was watched on surveillance the day I bought it.
If I ever see this when I need to return something I will never buy from them again
I honestly hate returning things, I just gift the items away if I have no use for them. If it’s expensive, I purchase warranties/ insurance or simply exchange.
What’s wrong with returning if you just tried it on? Half the time clothing is low quality and doesn’t fit the same as other items. Especially for us customers who shop primarily online. They let people try on clothes in the store, so online stores why is it wrong for us to return things that simply don’t fit or look like the pictures?
I was flagged when I would return baby shower items. I wanted store credit back but I was still flagged cause it could have been stolen they say.
me too. at target and it was purchased off my registry!
I exchanged something at Home Depot. The prices weren’t ringing up properly and the cashier had to do 3 returns on the same day. I got banned for a year for having too many returns.
Meanwhile at Costco...
What’s that joke about. We don’t have one where I live
@@johnc1280We do. I'm curious to know the answer to their comment...
@johnc1280 @tammiemartinez6485
Costco will accept any and all returns no questions ask
Costco currently takes things back even if you use them for years, with the exception of electronics. Not sure if and when they will change their policy. @@tammiemartinez6485

So my question for everybody is is online shopping really the future if this is the kind of experience, the end consumer is going to get third-party company should be nowhere near involved in any of this because it’s the consumer at the end of the day who absorbs the cost of these third-party companies and will eventually hurt the intended companies future by practically eliminating repeat business
Whose daughter did they let narrate this video seriously 🤨
My thoughts exactly
Returns have gotten out of control. You used to need a legitimate reason to return things ..now, people return things just for fun. It’s insane..
don’t make bad quality products and inaccurate descriptions or pictures
Retailers Stopped doing "EXCHANGES", so even people who just want to 'exchange' are forced to RETURN it.
girls love to return all their used dresses after the weekend is over 😂😂😂
If they do then we will just go somewhere else. That will just decrease customer moral.
I shop online. I end up having to return things: wrong size, looks used, some other issue. but especially for clothing, I am most likely returning because it didn't look good on me (either fit or look). so no more online shopping for me if the return policy is difficult.
BEST BUY uses a 3rd Party to TRACK ALL your returns.
Very interesting. If knowing all this makes consumers think twice before buying, then they could just figure not to, and just make do with whatever they have at home of the same thing that still probably works just fine. It's all the buy the bright and shiny thinking that is causing most of these returns anyway. Simply because they get home and realize I can not afford this after going over their credit card balances. Try minimalism. You buy little. And at the end of the day you add up everything you normally would have bought, then add that amount to what you saved in just one day! Do this every day and at the end of the week, the month, you'll be amazed the ability to conserve spending really does pay off✅️.
Drop the companies doing this
More "AI Algorithm" nonsense. Welcome to the future.
Way back in the day, in my 20’s, my friend at the time experienced this. She was a shopoholic in college. Always charging many items from Macys and Victoria’s Secret. She would buy multiple items in different colors, only to return most of them over and over again (she was using shopping to cope w/things in her life). It got to the point where she would ask me to return her items in store for her. I didn’t know why until after. She was banned b/c her name was flagged for returning too many items. So this practice has been around for a long time. If it wasn’t for this friend of mine, I wouldn’t know this was a thing back then.
And this doesent work online you can always just get around it
I’m definitely on a list lol
Narration is so bad, what is wrong with her voice? Very irritating to listen
It's painful to listen to.
I think it is cute
And Im sure there are things people hate about you. Be kinder.
The statement at the end is misleading. You can CANNOT GET a copy of your Retail Activity Report on request. You can only get it after there is an adverse action against you AND you supply the transaction number.
It is not like a Credit Report where you just get one on request for your own review.
It doesent work like this
The vocal fry on the narrator is so irritating!!! Stop this ladies… god has given u an amazing voice which is supposed to be incredibly sweet to the ears.. don’t destroy the gift!
Yes 💯
Can they still track you if you pay with cash or giftcards ?
1, and what % of the fraudulant marketed stuff should be returned but not? 2, they want to ban frequent good/legit returners too 3, most of the staff if any lack knowledge to inspect returns ( legit or not, it costs)
I return unworn items when they go on sale. it drives me crazy
Can’t you ask for a price adjustment?
Good knowledge but a bottom lines retailer are losing money.
People take advantage of the reurn policies. I've seen people return items they have had for years with faded receipts. Then they want to act out if you tell them that you can't take it back. I've even seen people use their receipts to try and return items that don't even match the receipt. They also buy new items and then use the receipt to return an old matched item. There are so many scammers out there. They ruin it for us all.
pay cash, dont give no reward membership or ID no tracking !
They've found a way to track purchases even when you pay cash. I intentionally made a cash purchase recently and had all kinds of advertisements for the item I purchased (which I never buy) when I got home. Facial recognition is bigger than most suspect.
@@abbyc.4215 they cant prove it tho
@@abbyc.4215you probably googled it before hand
A friend of mine would go to a clothing store and rather than trying things on he'd just buy a whole bunch and return the ones he doesn't want. Seems like a waste of time and effort to me.
Because why would one need a million years to return an item? lol!
I’d rather watch this video with the volume down and just read the captions…. The voice is irritating me!
Paying with cash is not a solution. When returning product, paid by cash, the sales clerk is required to ask for an ID and they scan that info into their system. And don’t get smart saying you don’t have one (ID) because then the business/clerk can deny any refund right there. I know….not cool (so don’t shoot the messenger)
Is this at specific stores? I always pay in cash but the only time I've been asked for ID is when I go to do a return without a receipt...
Not the way it works. If you have a reciept you are never asked for an ID. Only time they request that is on a no reciept return
This is meaningless if the buyer buys way more than the average customer. Retailers couldn't care less if the buyers spend 100k annually, and only returns 1k of that.
Sounds like lawsuits to me
Pay with cash.
i paid in cash
i have the receipt.
why do i have to show id?
Rejecting returns is illegal in America. It is actually against the law. That is why in America refunds are extremely common, but if you go somewhere else like Europe most companies don't actually offer a refund. In America you have to specifically state "All sales are final," Otherwise you are governed by the laws that require you to issue a refund.
I believe the statue states something like...
The item you purchased is valued at its purchased price, and if the purchaser decides they no longer want the item within a certain period of time, (I don't remember what the period of time is) then the item still carries its original value (the value you paid), and the purchaser is allowed to undo the transaction.
Terms and Conditions do not supersede the United States statues... 🤷🏾♀
It’s 3 days everywhere.
Made a lot of money from returning
I agree to much money being lost also cost of inflation I will just have stricter guidelines for full refund returns only like for detective items or charge a stocking/return fee to be put it back in shelves .
This is why people use cash!
Places who use agencies like the one mentioned require a customer’s personal information in order to make a return, regardless of how it was purchased.
I think the speaker's voice is very pleasant. I don't understand why there are so many comments. I've heard far more irritating voices
Other people have different opinions than you. Simple.
I generally dont return items
Years ago 2015-2017 I worked at TJmaxx and home goods in high school. This lady on drugs used to come in and return items like every once a week. We all knew she was untrustworthy.
I went to that website and I have to enter an order number to even get my information
Only scammers will get mad at them tracking returns lol 🤣
To those who are blacklisted..... maybe put more effort into what you buy instead of thinking everything is returnable just because you can. Then you won't be blacklisted lol. Everyone can't be a victim in life.
...but retailers can play the victim card?
@@danieldreyer2 They could, but the issue is not retailers. As they stated, it's people returning numerous items each year - somethings after using 1x (e.g. dress).
What if something is damaged or defective and you only find this out when you open it?
Smokscreenreport, when we are losing money is the out of control theft
I did all that before surveillance state. Lol. Now I just buy a few items once in awhile and exchange friends and jobs all the time.
