- The Story of New Netherland: Dutch Colony 1624 - 1644 via Zoom by historian and former teacher Thomas Riley of New Jersey. This presentation traces the history of the Dutch Colony from the early explorations of Henry Hudson in 1609 to the Village of New Amsterdam (New York City) governed by Peter Stuyvesant, to the spread of settlers throughout the colony into the Hudson Valley and beyond. Local Sullivan and Ulster County Dutch history will also be explored.
The Dutch of that 17th Century period came up with a Document that we here in The Netherlands call the 'Plakkaat van Verlatinghe;' it was the first ever 'Declaration of Independence' the world had ever seen. This Plakkaat van Verlatinghe was the inspiration for the American Founding Fathers to write their Declaration of Independence.
,wish audio was better. Interesting what I could hear. TY for your facts.
I have researched my family back to 1600's and I found some interesting facts. I need to look into this a little better, they're some questions I have. This was my grandfather:
Paulus Leenderts Vandergrift, baptized on 20 October 1613, Nieuwe Kerk, Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands, buried on 10 October 1679, Oude Zijds Kapel, Amsterdam
leaves Amsterdam
Paulus immigrated to America in 1644, settling at New Amsterdam (Manhattan), NY.
Paulus L. Van Der Grift
An an employee of the West India Company, he was Captain of the ship 'Neptune' until 1645 and then the 'Grest Garritt' until 1646.
Paulus accompanied Peter STUYVESANT on a journey to the West Indies in 1654. He served in a number of New Amsterdam offices (including Burgermaster 1657-1658 and 1661-1664).
A large land owner in New Amsterdam, he was a member of the Council in 1647-1648 337and Burgermaster (Mayor of New Amsterdam (now New York)) in 1657-1658 and 1661-1664; Orphan Master in 1656-1660 and member of Convention, 1653-1663.
He was a signer of the Ratification of the Articles of Capitualtion in 1664 which transferred New Netherland to the English.
Married on Feb. 13, 1641 in Amsterdam, Holland to Jannetje GERRETSD. In 1671, Paulus sold his property and returned to Holland with his family.
Children of Paulus and Gerretsd VANDERGIFT: Grietje; Leendert; Margariet married Jacob MAURITZ; Gerrit; Marritie married Gerrit VanTRICHT; Johannes died as infant; and Johannes.
Interesting stuff! Some aspects were too simply put, but interesting anyway! Unfortunately this story isn't too wellknown to Americans and the rest of the world nowadays. American history is written by the English, and they totally ignore the role The Netherlands played in American history...
Where is info on actual Hudson Valley? Just I. The last two minutes. Very disappointing.
