I personally think this straddled the line between darkness and comedy perfectly. Better than any film I've seen in years, even. Laughed out loud more than 6 times in the 1st act alone. Felt seriously unnerved when it took a dark turn in the last act. The last shot of the film genuinely struck a chord with me. Super tight script. I'm actually astounded by how good this film was. Best of the year so far.
I gotta hard disagree with Mark here. I thought the film balanced things excellently. When the movie shifts into the disturbing bits, it hits suddenly, but never felt abrasive or out of left field to me. In fact, it was right there all along and we just didn't know it yet.
I can never work out why Adam Brody never became a bigger star. Post The OC he did Mr & Mrs Smith, and then... not much really other than the occasional, albeit often good, bit part
Yeah, he definitely has the movie star factor. He commands the screen without trying hard but still can act. I never watched the OC but the show was so popular that I knew who he was. I think he picked the wrong roles. The roles were all saturated in cuteness and little substance. I know he was cast as the Flash in George Miller's failed Justice League but it was perfect casting. The kind of baggage he carries in The Kid Detective would be accurate to what Barry Allen carries after destroying timeline s. Brody is a good actor and hopefully this movie will put him in a better position in Hollywood.
I was initially tune this on on Netflix as a white noise while I was playing my Switch game. But it hooked me by the end of first act (kid's background) and got me stop playing the game. And the ending had me crying. I don't even know why I cry, but feel sad with him. Great movie. I need more movies like this one.
i have to disagree with mark i loved this film a true gem from last year that was one of my best of it had a tricky balance between comedy and really dark thriller and never made a step wrong. that rare film where at the end i sat back in my chair stunned by where this flick went. terrific film
Mark’s criticisms are fair from a technical/analytical perspective but I didn’t find that they stopped the film from being immensely enjoyable and moving. Great performances.
just saw it. love the soundtrack. like how the movie kinda got the retro feel to it. nice little mystery movie...a fun watch. hope they're doing a sequel.
When I first heard this title, I immediately thought of Donald Glover’s Mystery Team from 2010. That was an indie R-rated comedy about a group of Encyclopedia Brown-esque teens trying to solve a double homicide. Haven’t seen it in years, couldn’t say if it holds up.
@@flyboymike111357 yelling at the nearly dead old man was uncomfortable from the start (for some), but it’s just really really broad in between those moments.
really great movie, communicates a truly unique sentiment at the final scene, something I've never felt from a film before but that I know intimately. an ironic satire that's elevated at the closing credits, better than it has any right to be.
The identity of the killer was very obvious, but other than that, I thought it was a very enjoyable film. Adam Brody is very charismatic and should really be a bigger star than he is. Solid B- for me.
Your reviews are slipping. It seems that you dislike every solid dark horse movie that's come out recently, even though the actual consumers regularly find them excellent. Shape up, Mark.
He’s doing just fine. The movie isn’t bad but Mark touches on the films primary weaknesses as it does feel unbalanced and unsure at times. It’s also an overstatement to say he’s disliked a particular realm of movie as it’s been scattershot at best. Keep up the good work, Mark.
It was fine at most. The mystery element never feels as anything interesting enough to fully dive into and the comedy elements were only occasionally funny. Also, I felt like Sophie Nélisse was completely wasted in it. Her character never plays any significant part in the movie apart from being used as a plot device.
Disagree also with Mark. This was brilliant from start to finish, back and forth from light to dark, didn't overplay or ham-it-up. 😭 at the ending, emotionally under played, so good.
Big disagree on this one Mark. This is a better movie than Brick. Humour and darkness alongside great cinematography and timing. Case I point the final frame of the movie.

Same here. I loved it's sly humour mixed with it's pathos
credits are still rolling... what an absolutly fantastic watch. ignore mr kermodes sentiments on this one and enjoy
Yeah, I think he really missed the mark on this one. I thought this movie handled tonal shift really well. A really fantastic neo-noir dark comedy.
@@curtisbowman6199 or he just didn't like it
Maybe my favorite film this year, I was smiling from beginning to end. An amazing dark comedy.

A classic hidden gem. Absolutely great. I guess everyone has is own opinion.

He killed it in this movie. Amazing.
It’s not too late for him
He was going to be the flash in George millers JLA. You feel that could have been the big moment. Great actor
He was one of the best parts of Ready or Not. Even then, that's a recent release. Can't say what he was up to for so many years inbetween
Just saw it, it is fantastic.

This movie captured me from the beginning and the score was perfection. Mark! Give it another shot. I think you missed a gem 💎
This was a great film. I think the tone was great to be honest. A hidden gem for me
Mark’s criticisms are fair from a technical/analytical perspective but I didn’t find that they stopped the film from being immensely enjoyable and moving. Great performances.
Where can it be seen?
Big disagree with Kermode here. I loved it. An instant classic for me
Watched this blind, without knowing anything about the film. Enjoyed it and would recommend a watch.
just saw it.
love the soundtrack.
like how the movie kinda got the retro feel to it.
nice little mystery movie...a fun watch.
hope they're doing a sequel.
Strongly disagree I think the tone is perfect. I've never laughed so hard at a closing shot in my life. Fantastic film. Darkly witty.

Sounds awesome. I might check that one out.
@@flyboymike111357 it’s incredibly broad even for Glover back in the day when he was just on CollegeHumor with a sketch troupe.
It made me think of that ace ventura movie where ace was a kid. If not for RLM I wouldn't have ever watched this. Loved it tho.
@@DrkChocoKnight Watched the first 30 or so minutes, but that strip club scene made me feel super uncomfortable.

Have to completly disagree with you on this. I thought the handling of the darkness and the comedy was brilliant.

Enjoyed it but I felt they could have gone harder on the comedy. That would have made the dark twist more impactful also.
Couldn’t disagree more. This movie is a real gem. Fabulous in fact for all kinds of reasons.
Thought this was way better than Brick
I LOVE this film
I feel like this film hits different if you're a millennial.
I really enjoyed it, think mark missed it this time
This movie is amazing. Your nuts. Great film.
You bungled this one, Kermode.
Completely disagree with Mr. Kermode on this one, I loved the film

Idk man I thought it was alright
Your review is spot on! Couldn’t have said it better. Having said that I still loved it.
This wasn’t a review of Kid Detective. It was a useless comparison. Talk about the movie.
Brilliant little movie.
Disagree Mr Kermode. Can't win them all
Yeah I disagree. Just saw this and I thought the comedy and tragedy were very well-balanced. Give it a go.
I loved it.
You're wrong.
You can't be wrong here. It is his opinion
I thought it was great
Does anyone else feel Mark has just completely given up?
