  • Welcome to another edition of The Pace Report featuring vibraphonist Simon Moullier.
French-born and New York City based vibraphonist Simon Moullier recently released his forth album "Isla" at the famed Jazz Gallery in New York City featuring Lex Korten on piano, Alex Claffey on bass, and Jongkuk Kim on drums.
Simon grew up playing drums in his native France but came to the US to study at the famed Berklee College of Music in Boston where he studied with the great Terri Lyn Carrington where she convinced him to play the vibraphones. Upon graduation he attended the Thelonious Monk Institute where he studied with the late Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Heath, and Herbie Hancock.
I sat down with Simon to discuss his latest CD and reflect on the life of the great Wayne Shorter. For more info on his upcoming tour dates or to order his new CD please visit him online at www.SimonMoullier.com or Facebook.com/SimonMoullier

Simon is one of my heroes on the instrument - thanks for asking the right questions, Brian. I can't thank you enough for your work!

The album is Isla, the name of the tune is “Empress of the Sea.”

8:12 I have frequently heard this sentiment from top-level vibraphone players (Gary Burton, Stefon Harris): they are acutely aware of the limitations of the instrument, especially when compared to other instruments. I once had a prof tell me that the vibes are a "super horn" - they can play lines like a horn, but also chords like a piano. I've always felt like it is more of a stunted piano - fewer phrasing options than a horn and much more harmonically limited than the piano. But there is still something enchanting about its timbre that draws me to it.
