I was thinking the same, literally all of what people considered the WEST and more specifically the South West were all MEXICAN territories until 1948 that means more than 70% of what we call Texas today, all of NM, AZ, CA, portions of CO and UT. Remember the title says immigrants and this country is built by immigrants, it doesn't matter what country they come from eventually everyone that came here in the 1800s, their descendants in the 2020s are already Americans so yes it makes sense to include Puerto Ricans.

You don’t have to be a state to be party of this country, hence why the citizens of the territories and DC also have US citizenship, except American Samoa, they are US nationals but can easily become citizens.
