- Too bad it's dubbed. This interview is from the 1977 BBC documentary "The Man with No Name" about Clint Eastwood.
I don't speak Italian, but Leone is supposedly quoted as follows:
"Talmente poveri."
"Io penso che la caratteristica dei miei film sia che soprattutto sono dei film muti; il dialogo ha solamente un valore ed un senso aforistico."
"My films are basically silent films. The dialogs just add some wit."
That statement is so true!
Wit*
The translation is very loose. He basically said "The dialogs simply have an aphoristic value".
@@Anastasieleod Could you write down in Italian what he said, please?
@@DryNox No, I can't. I don't speak Italian, simply understand 70% of it.
@@DryNox
"io penso che la caratteristica dei miei film sia che soprattutto sono dei film muti; il dialogo ha solamente un valore ed un senso aforistico"
The one Italian director who understood westerns better than the Americans themselves.
spot on!
This guy is the Italian version of Orson Wells...
A big fat genius
Sergio isn't the version of nobody, Sergio is unic.
@@DonnieDuck02
True that!
Yes
sergio is a legend.....
I agree Sergio is a legend, but I have to respectfully disagree with him. I definitely liked "High Plains Drifter".
Leone: The dialogues only have an aphoristic sense and value

I think 'The Good the Bad ad the Ugly' is the best western ever made. I would also put it in the top 20 movies ever made. And I've seen thousands and thousands of movies in my life....
that movie is my favorite movie of all times.
Top 1!
greg Newsom i think once upon time in west is the best western ever made.
I agree. I have seen a huge number of movies from across the world and the good bad and the ugly is possibly one of the greatest i have ever seen. The music is also right up there with the best movie sound tracks ever made.
It is in my top five, but behind once upon a time in america which is his absolute masterpiece imo
Clint Eastwood is such a better choice than ANYONE else. No need to even bring up a name, there's no comparison
That's usually what you think when an actor fits a role perfectly.
Lynn Turman
yeah I know maybe others could of done it well and we would never have known but I'm happy that wasn't the case
Fabian Ahmad Me too!
Lynn Turman
I also think that Lee Van Cleef was a perfect sidekick or enemy for Clint. They were both just so badass haha
Fabian Ahmad Yep. Leone knew what he was doing.
This is the man that made Clint Eastwood a super star
He put him on the map
Maestro we're missing you, we need you, the cinema world is going to trash without people like you Sergio Leone
Him, Kubrick, and Hitchcock are the only directors who’s films I could watch over and over. I respect many other filmmakers, but the primes of these men are unmatched. Sergio is by far the most artistically gifted director i’ve ever seen, his casting choices were unmatched as well in my humble opinion.
Kubrick and Leone didn't have primes spent both their entire lives making masterpieces they are also deeply similar in that they put such emphasis on image that their films probably could work with no dialogue whatsoever just image and sound something they both got from Kurosawa.
@@realhillkell I see what you mean, but Kubrick released his biggest movies (aside from The Shining) in the 60s, and Leone as well in that decade with the Spaghetti westerns. Of course these gentlemen were making amazing films throughout their whole career, but my implication of “prime” is when they were most commercially successful in the states and over the pond.
Leone made Eastwood. There would be no Clint Eastwood without Sergio Leone.
Exactly!
Interesting. James Coburn was excellently suited for Italian Westerns, and did later star in "A Fistful of Dynamite" (made in the 1970's, Leone's last Western).
However, Clint did end up doing an unforgettably 'Good' job...
Did you mean "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", or a "Fistful of Dynamite", the latter with James Coburn....? Both are directed by Sergio Leone.
Michael: Sure I can do it this weekend.
CBS Radio Mystery "The Judges House" ...!
Sure, I'll be pleased, and report back.

@@JohnGLewis1964 And he wanted Henry Fonda but couldn't get him either but later he managed to get him for Once Upon a Time in the West, at end everything worked out for the best and he managed to work with his favorite american actors.
@@farben_ He wanted Henry Fonda for Lee Van Cleef's part in For A Few Dollars More. Clint talks about that on the extended DVD. But Fonda turned him down. The next year he tired to get Fonda again for The Bad then Charles Bronson but both turned Leone down. Clint suggested Leone give the part to Van Cleef and Leone said after some thought the idea of having Van Cleef in a completely different role began to appeal to Leone. Leone used Gian Maria Volonte in different roles in the first two westerns he did.
@@boblackey1 Interesting information. In my opinion that was Lee Van Cleef's best performance of all time. Tuko was great too.
The Shakespeare of the western.
I don’t think he was capable of making a bad film let alone an uninteresting one. Amazing filmmaker
the tension in his movies are super rare no one can wait for action with cool score than mr. sergio leone
I was brought up watching Clint eastwood westerns my dad who passed away a while back loved all of clints films more so the westerns. The good the bad and the ugly is in my eyes one of the best movies ever made. Brings back memories of watching it over and over again with dad and i never got bored of it Clint eastwood was my hero as a kid and he always will be
A truly great film maker, one who is greatly missed.
Greatest westerns of all time.
Sergio Leone made films that became my absolute favorites. There has never been another director as far as I'm concerned that ever captured the Old West like he did. People complained about the violence when these films came out, but in reality, the Old West WAS violent. I could never get tired of watching these films. I myself loved High Plains Drifter, but the man is entitled to his opinion as we all are.
+Stephen Jackson I just finished "Once upon a Time in the West." (for probably the 12th time). That movie is #2 for me. The Good, Bad, & Ugly" remains #1. I really focused this time on just WHY I love Once-Upon-A-Time. Obviously the cast has a lot to do with it, but Ennio Morricone fully deserves half the credit for these movies. The marriage of Leone & Morricone is not unlike Lennon & McCartney. These teams complement each other so well - words are not enough. The key is to let Morricone tell the story with music. I like what Leone says here. "My films are silent." That is true. He provides very little narrative. He just lets the story unfold visually while Morricone works his magic.
I heard Quentin Tarantino is very, very unhappy with EM's score for the hateful Eight. This doesn't surprise me at all. QT is a dialogue kind of guy....this is NOT what EM wants. EM wants room for his stuff and QT simply doesn't give him any room. EM hurt QT's feelings in 2013 when he said QT was not "cohesive." I know what he means and he's right. QT will probably scrap EM's score (My prediction). The two will probably never work again together. QT is good, but he's not as good as Leone was.
I wanted to hear exactly WHY Leone didn't like High Plains Drifter...
Lynn Turman because it SUCKED?
***** Nah, good western IMO. More realistic version of High Noon.
Did Q.T. say he was unhappy, were did you hear this. EM won an award for his score in Hateful Eight.
Clint Eastwood has been the best in any western.
thank god he didn't get james Coburn!
HAHAHA
@Nex Wex 2 :: agreed
Maybe James Coburn would have been even better. We will never know.
@Truthfears Guilty Yes, those movies would be meaningless with Colburn staring in them. Their success is because of Clint for the reason Leone stated - they are basically silent movies, and no one does silent better than Clint.
@Truthfears Guilty I am sure Colburn had his fans but for me I always viewed Colburn's acting as a kind comedy even when he was doing a serious part. I always viewed him as acting. I never was able to get lost in his character.
I always liken the Clint/Sergio dynamic to the Kurasowa/Mifune partnership.
And this made me like it all the more, Kurasowa also described Mifune “Like a cat” and a massive physical presence.
Fantastic film makers and actors the lot of them
What a brilliant man, such a shame he never made more movies.taken away before his time.
"I saw highplanes drifter, I didn't like it much"
Sergio how could you say that 😢
It was clints first movie , there was alota criticism
Quite the genius, you dont have characters like him anymore.
Imagine these movies without Clint Eastwood. He had such a characteristic face, so perfect for the roles he played. For me he is the exact personification of a cowboy.
Thanks Leone for you meeting Clint in your life, otherwise the world of films would not have been the same.
Great director
HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER IS AN AMERICAN CLASSIC. THE GOOD, BAD, UGLY TRIOLOGY IS UNIVERSALLY CLASSIC CINEMA
if a director looks like this i will trust any film he makes
He is the F**king Legend director of All Time.
This director is a genius full stop
Fist full of dollars is such a joy to watch
I love the way he speaks the Italian, with substance. Not like these pretty boy Italians trying to hit on tourists.
Funny! Was there w/ my blonde girlfriend 25 yrs ago. Italian boys tried to distract me w/ niceties while they flooded her with complements, trying like hell to steal her away. She and I laughed about it later over dinner. She's my wife now, and mother of seven boys. (I've taught them not to be deceptive, lascivious slime balls. Lol)
Gr8Layks what a story lol. God bless your large family.
Anonymous I apologize, my friend. We love nice pussy too much here and blonde girls are a dream for us. We just can not resist :-) Buona giornata, amico.
Anonymous 7 boys you can make your own outlaw gang if it was the 1800s lol
John Elmot cringe. You sound creepy as fuck.
That explosion is real, real danger, real effect, not a bunch of fake CGI pasted on blue screen.
It’s the nuances, the humor and timing of Sergio’s films...the pauses of tension between the action that make his films masterpieces... modern filmmaking has no clue about this, modern films have way too much junk involved.. too much dialogue and non necessities..
They are true Kitsch, but it is great kitsch. There was never anything quite so bad before.
The Good, The Bad, The Ugly was the BEST soundtrack, ever💕🌸
Clint Eastwood is a legend an amazing actor and producer, so talented, look from when he started to today
Sergio Leone was a real man. He is right. Commedia del arte was about caracters more than plot.
Thanks for sharing about this talented movie maker.
The best 10,000 dollars never spent
A true genius. I've been watching all sorts of movies the last few months, all good ones -- Amadeus, Citizen Kane, Edward Scissorhands, The Lion in Winter, And so on, but there's just something about his films that I always love and prefer to most movies. That thing he said about Homer blew my mind.
Thank you. Sergio Leone is my favourite director with the french Jean-Pierre Melville and others like Akira Kurosawa...Critics hated Leone and considered him as a master only after his death. Anyway, Critics and columnists never know anything about Sergio Leone's style and work.
Parabéns pelos ótimos filmes, um dos melhores que tenho, era uma vez no oeste, uma relíquia.
I wonder why he didn’t like High Plains Drifter.
I think it’s a good solid film.
He make best 4 western movie of all time!!! And he make one of the best gangster movie of all time! He make one of the best political movie of all time! He is one of the best 15 director of all time!!! Respect from Türkiye to LEONE!!!
"My films are basically silent films, the dialogue just adds some weight." - Leone. The fact there's no dialogue until the 12th minute, over 1/3rd the way thru, of episode 2 of the Mandalorian, is a great tribute to the man who clearly massively inspired the way the new series is made.
"My films are basically silent films." *Shows explosion from film*
Clint Eastwood was the right guy. Most intelligent guy who wrote the good the bad and the ugly. Cause we're truly seeing these 3 types of people in the world 🌎🌍 today
Genius Film Maker ❤❤❤
Sergio Leone knew his Greeks and Romans.
MR SERGIO LEONE's masterpiece greatest western film ever made in IMO!
Coburn would have actually been very good if I'm being honest. But Clint obviously did a great job and made it more iconic.
Sergio leone the father of western flim
Sergio said, he saw a western movie which he didn’t like much, he didn’t say which movie but here the English interpreter says otherwise High Plains drifter, which Leone never said that.
I guess it fair to say some actors are born for the part they play, as with Clint as the man with no name, Charlton Heston as Ben Hur, alan ladd Shane, perfect casting, as a point of interest Lee van cleef told the story on a American chat show of how he couldnt pay the rent and was wondering what to do when he got a call that very week from his agent saying would he be prepaired to go to spain to be in a western (for A FEW DOLLARS MORE) he said what have i got to loose!!! The rest is history. RIP LVC x
Homer's the Iliad...if you haven't read it (at least some of it...lol, I don't think anyone has read the entire "poem"), it should be on your bucket list.
there is a certain indolence in the way Sergio Leone talks, he reminds me of a cat. no wait, he reminds me of Clint Eastwood!
I mean be honest. What western film even comes close to the ones he did. Maybe I would put Josey Wales on par with for a few dollars more but the Good, the bad and the Ugly simply can't be approached, maybe Once upon a time in the West. Amazing films.
In terms of style and cenimatography nothing comes close. However I find that Unforgiven has the best story and character arcs of any Western to date.
Just imagine if Clint Eastwood wasn't cast in the Dollars trilogy...I wouldn't have watched it.
I LOVE Coburn, but if he were in this movie, nobody would know about it, nothing to the degree the movies are now known.
Eastwood basically owes this man his entire career
Clint's "indolent way of moving" is what makes him so damn sexy.
🎵 He move in space with minimum waste and maximum joy 🎶

It would’ve been really interesting to see what Clint could’ve done in Charles Bronson’s place of Once Upon A Time In The West. Nothing against Charles, he did a wonderful job. Also how does this guy not like High Plains Drifter? That movie was solid!
It wouldn't have been as good without Clint.
The video was interrupted just when he was about to say that there was a western movie that wasn't his own that he didn't like at all ... probably an American western. I am aware of censorship.
He names it: and you didn't hear "High Plains Drifter", a film directed by Clint Eastwood himself, heavily influenced by Sergio Leone.
Sergio didn't like High Plains Drifter because Clint said "NO" to his Once Upon a Time. Although I would LOVE to have seen more Sergio and Clint movies, Clint Eastwood made the right choice for his career... and he has 2 Oscars to prove it.
I bet James Coburn regrets not taking the offer
I wonder if he regretted doing those two campy films..."Our Man Flint" or "In Like Flint"?
He did get James Cobern later on in his 1971 film "A Fistfull of Dynomite" later re-released as 'Duck You Sucker"It was quite good actually. However...Cobern would have been awfull in Good-Bad-Ugly.But that's my opinion.Knowing the success of Sergio's magic..im sure Cobern would have done well. (Im glad I never spent 3 hours finding out though)
But not as Clint Eastwood
He didn't like High Plains Drifter because Clint Eastwood declined his offer to star in Once Upon a Time in the West. Clint started his own production company and went on to become larger than life.
Where is the rest of the interview?
The Italian Hitchcock
James Coburn would have been ideal if there were no Clint Eastwood.
lol at the end.
more actions less words, nice
You didn't like High Plain's Drifter? Are you crazy?
matthewakian2 remember he wanted Clint, Eli and lee to reprise their characters in "Once a upon a time in the West". where Charles Bronson kills them at the railway station. Lee and Eli where onboard with the Idea, Clint said No , he felt the characters were done. Leone was angry He felt that Eastwood owe him, and in many ways Clint did.
Wow. Never heard that story before.
matthewakian2 its in this cinema retro, Leone was angry for years.www.amazon.com/Cinema-Retro-Eastwood-Special-Tribute/dp/B00S3CY3G4
I always thought the Charles Bronson character was a role Clint turned down. Too similar to the man with no name...
Lynn Turman yeah in many ways it was, only difference, it gave a origin to Bronson character.
Wow! Sergio didn't like " High Plains Drifter "
In the end, he hated making westerns. He didn't like working with horses.
James Coburn as "The Man with no name"? Probably would have worked reasonably well, although Coburns's acting style was more similar to that of Lee Van Cleef, rather than Clint Eastwood, so he could have been effectively played either part.
I think Cleef had a similar acting style to Eastwood. Very understated, very filmic, conveyed more with a look than with dialogue...
He had a lot of experience playing western baddies by the time Sergio Leone hired him, and had perfected an excellent ironic smirk. It can be seen to best effect in "For a Few Dollars More" when he psyches out and disposes of Klaus Kinski's "Hunchback" in classic style.
We dodged a bullet with Coburn...
Gelmiş geçmiş en iyi yönetmen
cüneyt arkın western?
Bruh no way James Coburn could pull off that role
Coburn would have also been a topnotch casting.
Duck you sucker also like the man with no name character
agreed, Coburn was a damn good actor and he did Westerns and was great in them.
I didn't like High plains drifter either. Clint was best in Sergio Leones movies without a doubt.
That just tells u Leones one of the best
Agree but Unforgiven is one of the greatest films ever. Directed by Clint
he just said the amount for hiring in public that tells everything
Silent movies. Comedia d el arte. Ajax the greeks. It all makes sens
Clint is living proof of the power of positive feedback. He has received so much positive support for his roles, so many compliments on his portrayals of the harbinger of all that's good, who has the answer to all that is bad but is not bothered with the details of a survivable society. The proof of his success is in the speeches of bravado, lack of honest criticism and absolute right-on-the-money (he4's paid) moralizing about those whom he believes aren't the 'man' he is.
The problem is, he's a man with power because he has mi\oney and influence. But he is not a man for any other reason than he can effectively pretend to be one for a few dollars more -or less. But, when he stood -and apparently still stands with the party of Russia, all bets on deserved respect even for pretend patriotism (his best performance to date, we now know, is off.
inkblot131 Clint Eastwood has never been a commie you slanderous fool.
Nonsense. Clint Eastwood is oft-criticized by Hollywood elitists. He can withstand their ideological nepotism because he achieved stardom.
It is ridiculous to insinuate that the Republican Party is the "party of Russia" when it was the Republicans who labeled Russia and Putin as "geopolitical foes" (to which Obama publicly laughed and mocked). In fact, Democrats were cozy with Russia....until Russia passed what they deemed to be anti-LGBT legislation.
Suddenly, the same media that laughed alongside Obama about Russia being a "geopolitical foe" were suddenly accusing Russia of being what Republicans said they were all along. The irony, though, is that Democrats suddenly tried to "control the narrative" via their brand of fake news and claim that Republicans were "cozy" with Russia.
a fistfull of dynamite was sergio lemon.
I can't see anyone else as Blondie other than Eastwood, but I think Coburn would of still worked...such was Leones genius...
Duck you sucker is also the same type of character
Corburn is great as Pat Garrett but I can’t see anyone else as Blondie

james coburn to expensive!! these days all actors won't to play in a leone movie for free..he is a legend!
Average person got a fistful of intelligence, Sergio got a few intelligence more.
The translation sucks!
He is really more articulated than it seems by the english speaker!
O bir dahi
I can't imagine James Coburn to do Clint role or job ! Clint was perfect for this role , Cobourn is good actor but his face doesn't suit for a man with no name.
'funny'
After Eastwood turned down Once Upon A Time In The West, Leone turned on him. But Eastwood was smart. He had plans and needed to establish himself with American studios. That's where the money was.
Eastwood brought more to his role than Leone could have imagined. If not for Eastwood, Leone's Fistful Of Dollars would've been garbage and done very little money. And the studio would not have forced Leone to do a sequel. He never would've gained the respect he did and Fonda wouldn't have worked for him nor would he have gotten big budgets for his other movies.
I beg to differ. If it wasn't for Leone, Clint Eastwood would have been a television actor starring in low budget serial television shows. Leone would have made it with any actor that he'd choose. Personally I think Clint Eastwood it was a very good choice and he fitted the role perfectly.
I beg to differ. If it wasn't for Leone, Clint Eastwood would not have made it big and would have been just a low- budget television shows. Leone made him a big star and I strongly belive that Leone would have succeeded all the same had he chosen another actor. Personally I think that Clint Eastwood was the perfect choice as he fitted the role perfectly.
Oh pls. Nobody wanted Eastwood. He couldn't get past tv appearances. Sergio Leone made him. All Eastwood did was demand more and more money. The good, the bad and the ugly almost didn't happen bc Eastwood demanded 20 times the original pay. Eastwood is only cool bc Leone made him cool. The reality is far from it.
Clint could have kicked Coburns ass all over the place.
