      OMG yes he needs a knighthood. If it wasn't for this guy I wouldn't have got the grades I needed to do a-levels at my dream college doing my dream course. I was on the edge of failing physics and I needed 7's in all 3 sciences to do the course and after watching this guy for a week I got 2 7's and a 9!! Literal life saver!!!

    I’m not sure but I think they could ask you to use a circuit with an ammeter and a voltmeter instead of a joulemeter. And so you would have to find the energy by using the equation energy = current x time x pot.difference.

    Why did you use a beaker contained with oil instead of a block like other websites and videos use?

      Because you could be asked to determined the SHC of any material, for example a metal block or oil. So I decided to show oil.

    Sir I have a question, Instead of a joulemeter my teacher tells us that we use an ammeter, a voltmeter and a stopwatch.
    Then combine to formulas
    E = P x t, P = I x V
    therefore
    E = I x V x t
    then we do all the other normal calculations in the experiment (e.g find temperature of the liquid)
    Which way is better for the exam?

      In the exam, they might simply ask you to describe a method to measure the SHC for a material. Either approach is equally acceptable (the joule meter is easier to describe though). The idea behind required practicals is that any valid method is accepted as an answer.

      It's a joulemeter which measure the energy passing into the immersion heater.

      My textbook is the same haha but both methods are accepted on the markscheme (i usually use this method as it's easier for me to remember and it's the way i was taught in class)

    good day sir for this practical would you have to measure the weight of the beaker beforehand?

      No because you would normally place the beaker on the balance and press "zero" or "tare". That would then compensate for the mass of the beaker.

    In the CPG revision guide, they find the SHC by using the P=VI equation and then E=Pt and then plotting a graph and doing 1 divided by gradient x mass - which is a better method to use?

      If you get given the energy and time and mass, use the SHC equation; I think CGP only did that because the energy value was not given in the question or because the question required you to draw a graph

    When doing this experiment at school, we used a 1kg aluminium block. When doing an exam, should we use oil when describing the method, or the aluminium version if the experiment?

      In the exam, it will tell you exactly what you are using so you should just use that.

    Hi sir, in my physics lessons (I do triple) we use a aluminium cylinder with a weight if 1 kg and do loads of other steps, in the exam will it use this process with the oil?
