I learned a very simplified version of this in elementary school. My music teacher taught us that "dayo " song from the Beetlejuice movie. (This was the year the movie came out) She then proceeded to put on an old vinal of the song and explain what the song was about. "Come Mr tally man, tally me bananas. Day lights come and me wanna go home "
Yup it was about the plight of the banana plantation workers.
She goes on to explain that the poor workers were slaves just like the people in the sugar plantations we had sung about the week before when we sang "old spirituals".

If I'm not mistaken the government is the one that mandates what topics to cover in history class. I doubt they'll want teachers to talk about horrible crimes their ancestors did. Most of the time they'll probably want you to hear one sided accounts of how great they are.
Vietnam for example would only talk about the evil communists but not talk about the My Lai Massacre where American veterans m*rdered a whole village along with their kids.

I work in the produce department of a major supermarket chain and Chiquita bananas are one of our main products (i.e. top priority). We are instructed by guidelines to remove any bananas that are "too yellow" or have brown spots , or single bananas that customers have pulled apart from a bunch. For some reason, these sell less quickly and ripen faster when broken from the bunch.. Hearing this story of all the blood sweat and tears that go into producing the Cavendish banana really puts into perspective the cushy 1st world lives we do lead. "Aaw, this banana is yellowish and has brown spots.. time to throw it away!" Such waste..

Yes we have no bananas, we have no bananas today. The shtick where someone slips on a banana peel was something that was happening for real. People were eating so many bananas and throwing the peels on the sidewalks and streets. The banana we eat today is the cavendish that was propagated in the late 1880’s because it lasted longer in shipping. The original banana was shorter and very sweet with a beautiful real banana flavor but it spoiled faster than being ideal.

As a Latin American growing up in the U.S., NO one knows about this, but its a part of my history. They never teach things like this in American schools, but my dad's side worked for the United Fruit company, so I personally heard about the horrors. I really feel so seen. I learned some extra things too during this episode. The U.S. did despicable things to our countries. Thank you for using your platform to tell this story and educating the public. You are such a brilliant and engaging storyteller! I did know the mid-20th Century association with dictators, coups and other misdeeds, but the earlier history was a revelation.

Love your series, great job! But have you ever noticed how banana flavored things don't really taste like banana? It's because the bananas we eat now are a different species than the ones from the 1950s. Remember that fungus you mentioned? It wiped out so much of the banana plants that they had to change the type of banana.

Reading the Fish that Ate the Whale: The life and times of America's Banana King: Rich Cohen doesn't seem nearly as entertaining as listening to Bailey discuss this entire narrative. But, for anyone interested in the history she is discussing the book is a through dive into the topic.

Bailey, your episodes are super interesting and educational and delivered in such a great way! But also, your voice is like ASMR, it's so calming and that gives me a bit of a dilemma because the content is soooo interesting, but your voice makes me so relaxed that i start feeling sleepy :D

When I saw the title of this video I screamed, finally someone not from Guatemala is talking about the messed up United Fruit Company.
I am from Guatemala and I can say that the United Fruit Company messed up so much for everyone that this is taught at school. Up to this day, we make memes about this. Yes, it was tragic but that is how we cope with all the misery we have to live in here.

Has anyone ever noticed the "Face under the Lamp"? The scallops of the lampshade are the eyes, the candle and skull make the nose ridge, I believe "Joan's" tail makes the mouth and the table is the chin... 🤭 if it was intentional, that makes it even better 😊 Bananas!! 😉

Hi Bailey, I really like your dark history podcast, and the fact you laugh at the really wrong moments. You know, like when someone gets hurt or killed... I seem to be afflicted with the same disorder. I wonder what we could call it...hmmm? Anyways, the only bad thing is that there's too many "commercials" . I was thinking that I was watching cable TV ! I certainly hope they're paying you well. Thanks for the history lessons. Lydia Ambriz

I haven't eaten a banana in almost 32 years! The ones we get here in New Zealand are fibrous, tasteless and just gross. I miss how they use to taste and how mushy hey were. It's sad that ultimately they will become extinct. Love ya Bailey, keep the stories coming.
