@@ThistlesForEyesI’m so glad to hear it!
Rachel, you have to read Razorblade Tears now. It's by the same author and it's about the fathers of two men who were in a relationship and killed in a hate crime coming together to hunt down their sons' killers because the justice system is failing them. And they have to deal with their own homophobia and racism along the way because it was an interracial queer relationship.
Sounds like I have a new author to fixate on! Thanks for the rec, hope Rachel reads it and likes it too!
SA COSBY IS A GENIUS like I think he is the best current working writer. Something I value about him was using this book as a jumping off point to talk about racism with my grandfather. He is about to have a half black grandson and my mom, sister and I have been trying to help the older more bigoted family members learn so my brother in law doesn't have to be the one to shoulder that burden from my sister's white family. And SA Cosby's book is blatantly about race and religion and police brutality. But is an incredible thriller. So my grandfather who adores thrillers got into this book and this opened his eyes in a way that bigoted news sources fed to 80 year old white men never will. Him realizing that his great grandson will have a very different experience and it was something he was ignorant to really got him emotional. And that wasn't something I expected. It's not shy about its message at ALL but it's still brilliantly accessable even to old bigoted men.
I don't think I've ever heard a worse author name than SA Cosby oml
When you said “nobody warned me🥺🥺” I was so worried! I’m so glad you liked it!
Babe, you said 5 stars. I was sat. I'll circle back when I've read it
Wooooooo!!!
I always hated seeing that dang flag every time I’d be driving back to college after spending time back home
It's especially frustrating to me seeing confederate flags up north in places they have no business being (not that they have business being anywhere), in states that were never in the damn confederacy (cough*Pennsylvania*cough). The idiocy of bigots is astounding.
Me discovering this book: All the Sinners Bleed? Thats a good name! Lets check this out AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH
I saw you give this five stars on Goodreads and immediately put it on hold at the library. It also got five stars from me.
How you found her on Goodreads?
🧡 I know that flag! I hated driving past it when i still lived in Florida
I read this last year and rated it 5 stars even though it didn't leave me feeling "good" because as you say, it's heavy and brutal and dark but also beautiful and the first of books like it that I've read. Thanks for letting me relive it again with this review!
Ayo! Thanks for being my background at work today!
Yo let's go more reads with Rachel 🎉😮 perfect timing too because I was about to draw 😅
1 min gang ❤ much love Rachel, as a librarian I appreciate your coverage and activism against book bans. Thank you for being so amazing!
Edit: Coming back to this because this sounds right ip my alley, see you at the end!
🧡 tempted to risk my mental wellbeing on this one lol
I definitely couldn't handle actually reading this right now, so it was really nice to be able to hear you talk about it instead. The book sounds incredible and I definitely relate to losing faith from tragedy. Though for me it was more questioning if I even HAD faith to begin with since I was so young during the loss that it felt more like I was a kid doing what they were told because the adults said so. I want to try out some S.A. Crosby books when I'm in a better place for sure! He apparently also has some fantasy out there, though I'm not sure what kind and for what age range, so maybe I could do some more research and see if that's an option for me. Thanks for the video! 🧡
This was such a good read- his voice in text is so immersive. I read a couple of his other works but this one is his best work imo!!
Thank you for reviewing this one, I don't think I can handle this one, which is a shame because I've loved everything you've loved so far ❤
I never heard of S A Cosby but your review was a rollercoaster! Might look more into this book! 🧡
A five star review is all I need from Rachel! I've already borrowed the audiobook from the library; now I'll finish the video on mute so I won't get spoiled but you can still have my view 🤣
Thanks friend 🥹❤️❤️❤️
I JUST got this book off of libro fm. glad to see it gets a rec, but i'll have to come back and watch this video after i finish it!
I haven’t read any SA Cosby books but he’s definitely on my list I’ve got two of his books on my shelf waiting to be read!
Like and commenting 50% through because I'm definitely reading this book. It sounds absolutely incredible and I CANNOT WAIT to grab this from the local horror bookstore.
new Rachel video!!!!
SA Cosby is actually from my town and you can see that sadly a lot is based of yhe town
There is actually a confederate flag with Jesus under it next to the middle that has an African American named after it
Rachel we need a video of horror recomendations from you
Hey! I have a queer horror recs video here: ua-cam.com/video/pclCFkDH-rI/v-deo.htmlsi=jwhYlsALvMIqqSwD
This book sounds really good. The serial unaliver is reminding me of John Doe from the movie Se7en (which I still haven’t recovered from) and I always found horror to be a metaphor on what can happen if certain issues or ideologies are left unchecked and end up taking over a mundane society.
🧡 Always enjoy your book reviews because of how considerate you are when giving warnings on content. I'll check this book out. Cheers!
If I may ask what is a snake preacher?
Snake handling churches are a small denomination of Southern Pentecostal Christianity. The belief is based on a couple passages in Bible about the Might of God protecting you from the venom of serpents and they kind of took that and ran. Pentecostals are also the ones who speak in Tongues, so the while experience is pretty intense and can be a bit traumatic. They're also typical secluded and insular, which is why "snake handling church" or "snake preacher" is used derisively.
Omg, I know that flag, I can almost see it from my house and have to pass it all the time to get to work. I wanna burn it every time I see it, and anytime I have people visit from out of state I feel like I have to, like, disclaimer it whenever we see it. 😢
Also, I'm not a horror girlie (with books), but just knowing you scored it so high makes me want to read this one.
I have this author on my radar. Will give his works a shot when I'm in the mood for thrillers. 🧡
🧡 I’m def gonna read this book
🧡 I am intrigued, I love thrillers and this definetly seems like something I'd enjoy! Thanks for sharing this one!
Definitely gonna keep an eye on this author's works now! 🧡
I tried to read Razorblade Tears - it was too gory for me but I appreciate what S.A. Cosby is doing. Also I saw his panel at the National Book Festival last year and he is a big muscular man so maybe thats why they used muscular to describe his work??? Idk, its still kinda weird even if that is the case.
Thank you for reading and reviewing these adult books!! I’m transitioning from YA to New Adult to Adult books so you’re being very helpful!
🧡 This sounds so intriguing. Will give the book and audiobook a try. Thank you for your review, Rachel!
Hope you like it!
You convinced me to read this 😅😊
I Love S.A. Cosby!!! I've read all his books and agree with others who suggested reading Razorblade Tears. It's one of my favorite books of all time. The depth of his characters really make you care about them as if they were real people. You feel what theyre feeling.
Based on your thoughts on this book I think you'd like The Reformatory by Tananarive Due. It is set in Jim Crow era Florida about a haunted "boy's school." It is based on a real school and inspired by one of the author's family members. So so good.
I paused the video before the spoiler section, checked Libby and yay the audiobook was available! Within the first chapter I was HOOKED. Never read anything by Cosby before, but I already love his writing style and the narrator is 😘👌 The synopsis reminds me a bit of a book I read a long time ago, A Land More Kind Than Home by Wiley Cash. Another Southern crime book with religious trauma at the center of it. Probably not as good as this (it was the author's debut, and I read it years ago) but maybe worth checking out if you want something similar
I know, the exact flag you're talking about. My husband and I roll our eyes every time we see it 😮💨
Ok sold, I need to read this
This just skyrocketed to the top of my TBR list. It sounds like exactly the book I need to break my reading slump. If my local library doesn't have it I may have to break my self-imposed book-buying ban.
I really don’t like horror but I am so going to read this. I grew up in small town Ohio (in the 60s and 70s) very near where Jeffery Dahmer grew up. I muted the spoiler part of your review, but I’ll be back to listen after reading this book
I don't have much stamina for reading books but you're really convincing me to read this one.
Yayyyy I did my job ❤️
@@ReadswithRachel added it to my wishlist and everything
I read this and it was a five star read!
I loved this book so much!
I still think about this book and it has been months since I read this!
I’ll be thinking about it for a long time to come as well
Amazing review! You are such an insightful, informed, and eloquent reviewer
Yay! Thank you!
Razorblade Tears is amazing. He uses the same talented narrator for all his audiobooks. 🧡
That’s great news for me!
This one is going right into the tbr 🧡
You read the synopsis and I pulled up my phone and searched for the book on Libby. It was available! I borrowed it immediately. ❤ I read so many of your recommendations, and even so many of the books you DON'T like when I feel like I might like them even if you didn't. Love your channel. 💕
Thank you so much 🥹❤️
Just added to me TBR. Gonna save it for October 😊
Perfect October book!
This book was one of my top reads from last year. S. A .Cosby is a master.
I also tandem listened and read, just so so good! The narrator does all of Cosby’s books.
I haven’t yet read Razorblade Tears, but I did read Blacktop Wasteland. I highly recommend.
🧡
The narrator does all his books?!? Ahhh that’s great news for me
I got Razor Blade Tears a bit ago, I plan on reading it soon. I don't read a lot of horror/thriller books so even though I've only heard good things about it, I'm hesitant to start it. Horror often bores me, and I want to love that book so I'm waiting to be in the mood to read horror.
I plan to read that one soon too!
🍊 Blacktop Wasteland and Razorblade Tears are both also incredible. I work at a library and someone who reads so differently from I do and I kept just gushing over SA Cosby’s protagonists.
I loved this book and also razorblade tears. Such emotion in both and you are really drawn in to the story.
YES
🧡
Your review makes me want to read this, even if it would be triggering as all hell, damn.
i have nothing to add that you didnt already say, but ill leave a comment anyway so the dreaded algorythm doesnt bury this one!
hoping you read razorblade tears as well!!! one of my absolute favorite books & a great read for pride month 🧡
❤❤❤
All the Sinners Bleed was my forst SA Cosby book and I was pleasantly surprised! I gave it 4 stars but after hearing you reiterate everything, I’m bumping my rating 😁 also read Razorblade Tears and liked it as well
I haven't read a S A Cosby book yet, but I do own My Darkest Prayer. I keep putting it off, but maybe I'll wait for October when I like to read horror books.
the line about hell hit HARD.... dude that was absolutely raw, and i think it further solidified that i NEED to get this book
Right?!?
As a Central Floridian myself, I had no idea about that giant flag. The worst thing on my side of I4 is the eyesore, may it stand ever unfinished
🧡 I really want to read Razorblade Tears by this same author, I hear nothing but good things. I'm definitely putting this book on my list. 🧡
Hope you enjoy it!
Weee new vídeo 🎉🎉🎉🎉
🧡 I wish I could read this but it has strong triggers for me
Totally understand!
Damn, idk if I can read this but I really want to.
I read this a bit worried about the violence and while there are some descriptions that are graphic it did not feel gratuitous. I read "pretty girls" by Karen Slaughter and the graphic descriptions of violence in that book put me off that author for life. I can't forgive her for what she exposed my mind to. It also felt like unessessary whereas in this book nothing is described unessessarily and there's nothing graphic just for shock value.
🧡 ooooo I wish I could read this but I think I would perish xD it sounds so good!
I'm glad you're having fun with all these 5 star reviews, but I come here for the misery! 😡
The misery returns next month! Back to back rants coming
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
🧡 it's a different book for you!
I love S.A. Cosby’s books! I love how his characters are so complex and seem so real. Razorblade Tears and Blacktop Wasteland are both incredible books. Check the trigger warnings, though. I recall RT being especially gory. Plus TW for homophobia and racism.
I love the chapter where SPOILERRRRSSSSSSS
Titus confronts the snake preacher. Masterfully written.
MASTERFUL!!!
🧡🧡🧡
I was really irritated about Darlene until the end where she leaves. I just felt she was written with no personality and stereotyped the "good woman" by the writer. Then after she left it was clear she was written that way because that's how Titus saw her. He didn't see her personality, he just gave her this "good woman" status and used that as a reason to stay in the relationship.
From the comments I've seen, I'm starting to think this author's work is described as "muscular" because the author apparently is able to even convince deeply bigoted idiots to get empathy for people who are "different" (other faiths or no faith, black, queer, whatever). Which sounds pretty "muscular".
Ooooo this is gonna be GOOD! I love religious trauma!!!!! 🤩🥳
Honest question: what are snake priests? Like is it a USA thing or specific to this book?
Southern Baptist or Penacostal Christians who will sometimes "prove" their faith by big acts--like getting into a pit a snakes. If you make it unscathed, this is seen as a miracle.
Edit: this is not the majority or Southern Baptist or Pentacost. It is a small offshoot or sect.
