Whoa whoa whoa, so even the huge one you are tapping with your hand at the beginning of this video will die back and go dormant every year but then come back during the next growing season AND grow to be even larger than the year before? Fascinating!! Video Suggestion: This specimen would make for an epic compilation video. It would be SO COOL to see a one year time lapse compilation video where you have a camera and tripod setup and programmed to take a video every day at the same time for whatever duration (ie: 30 seconds per day) and then after collecting one years worth of video clips, edit them into a compilation video so viewers can watch it go through such a crazy growth cycle! Could also accomplish something similar by doing it as a photo series where instead of a video, you take one photo per day (again, from same spot/angle) and then make a video of the compiled images. Either way, I think it would be such a fun way for viewers to see the crazy growth cycle of this specimen! Especially if the video or photos were started at the peak of its growing season and then continue through the next 365 days so viewers can watch it go from starting out at its peak height -> dying back -> dormant -> waking up -> growing like crazy -> peak height for second time and then after that you could show a side-by-side comparison of photos and measurements from peak height at start vs end, it would be so neat to see how much larger it grew that year versus the year before! Now I feel inspired to see if I can find one of the houseplant friendly varieties of this plant, thank you!
Yes that is exactly right! It grows this big (or bigger) again every year until it’s mature enough to flower. That then takes so much energy out of the bulb that it shrinks again and needs several years of a leaf to get big enough again for a flower
Oh and a very cool idea for the timelapse, but they often move the plants and when they’re dormant they are moved out of the way to show other, not dormant plants (as it’s literally just a bucket of soil for like 4 months) So not really easy to do unfortunately!
How quickly does it replicate? Many plants grow extra stems/bulbs that can be separated & grown elsewhere. However, producing fruit & a new genetic line seems to take an extra-long time than other edible tubers, doesn't this make it less likely to survive?
This can be propagated from a piece of leaf, from what I know it doesn't grow side shoots like that. The seeds or leaf cuttings are the way to go. And yes, it's highly endangered in nature from what I understand
oh we call it chena in Malayalam. it is a sort of yam here. we boil it, roast it, make curry with prawns, it's allergic to some causing itching and redness.
@@justaguy7131 The bulbs are treated like any other tuber. It's peeled and cooked- boiled and eaten as is or with sauces or chutneys, added to soups, sautéed veggies.
