I loved this movie from the moment I saw it, even though I don't like reading subtitles ... I later saw "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou", and realized "Knockout Ned" (Seu Jorge) was in it, playing the guitar, and singing. Did some research, and found out this dude is a dope-ass artist. Went to Strawberries, and bought his cd, "Cru"... Fell in love with the music, and the language... After a while, a whole crew of Brazilians came to work where I worked, and that's where I met my wife... I live with her, in Brasil now, and I love it here, and still love this movie... And now I watch it, and don't have to read the subtitles.

Yeah, but the story was a bit fabricated in the movie. There was actually a war in the street between Lil Ze (Jose Eduardo Barreto Conceicao) & Knockout Ned(Mané Galinha
) , but the real story is that Knockout Ned was actually killed by Lil Ze's gang in the same way as Knockout Ned's brother was killed in a fury of bullets after they found out where he lived and caught him slipping coming out of the house. In the movie, his brother was killed but it was actually Knockout Ned that was killed in front of his family. Can read more here

There is indeed a little of that essence in the production of the film, but what enriches this film was the methodology and all the care to work with such a young cast and the responsibility not to produce something cliché but with a message that marks the viewer for a good documentary research on social inequality in Brazil and in the world.

there's also a documentary about City of God which shows how all these great artits remained poor even though the film was a sucess (except for the white girl - who is a talent artist aswell - but that's obviously not the point)

It is interesting that this movie's story happens in the context of our military dictatorship, at the end of it, in the late 70's and during the 80's. So, the favelas and the organized crime were formed during this period. The city of god, the region, was founded by a public program by the government that send poor people away from urbanized area, with no social protection. Like they needed to "sanitize" the urban rich areas from the poor just expelling them. Also, during this period (dictatorship, 1964-1985) brazilians had no political rights (right to vote) and many civil rights were extinct, like habeas corpus. At the same time, we didn't have a legal and formal justice system (because it was suspended) fully funcioning, so both police and common crime were normalized. Crime paid off. And only a few people knew abou it because we had censorship on media. Only people that lived in the favelas at that time knew this was happening.
That was one of the causes of the raise of organized crime and militia in Brazil, but no one talks about it today. This is the same organized crime that lives today all over our contry. On that time, we had this paramilitary police ("death squads") that persecuted the poor and black people, comunists, leftists and university students whith leftist "tendencies" and armed guerrillas. Tortured them, killed them and hide. And with censured media the brazilians from that time didn't knew about those things. Also, the military coup happened because the USA government made pressure on our army. In 1964 the USA army had a maritime military fleet on our coast, in case the coup did not work out.
I am only talking abou this stuff because we need to contextualize historically and socially this movie to fully understand it. This movie is a story about how organized crime raised in our country.
Para os brasileiros que querem entender melhor do que eu estou falando. A ditadura militar gestou o crime organizado.

I know a lot of people probably told you to react to this movie already but I will ask too because its one of the best brazilian movies. The name is Elite Squad (Tropa de Elite), this movie shows the favela reality from different perspectives (both cops and people that live there), it also represents better the reality of the current times because City of God is showing the favelas of the 60's ~ 80's.
