Sanskrit is an Indo-Aryan language, whereas Tamil is a Dravidian language. They're not related in any way. They both co-existed for a really really long time and kind of influenced each other, which is why there still are some words common in both.

Thank you! I was also a bit bummed about bawa saying this. Thamizh and Sanskrit are certainly ancient languages but thamizh is not derived from sanskrit. But again one cannot deny the influence that sanskrit has had on thamizh. There are so many sanskrit words that are used in thamizh every day. Also thamizh and sanskrit have contributed to a lot to many English words we use today, eg the English word rice comes from the latin word or oryza which in turn comes from the thamizh word arisi

In fact my photography company’s name is also an untranslatable word in English... it’s called ‘Meraki pictures’. Meraki is a Greek word that is used to describe doing something with soul, creativity, or love -- when you put "something of yourself" into what you're doing, whatever it may be! I think this word works best for people in the creative fields 😊

Tamil is not a derivative of Sanskrit. From Sanskrit to English including all other major European and middle eastern languages are Indo-European languages. Tamil Telugu Kannada Malayalam and other derivatives in south India are Dravidian languages, with varying levels of influence from Sanskrit and English words in the currently spoken form.

I agree. Earliest evidence of tamil from Anuradhapuram, Sri Lanka has no Sanskrit influence. Wayanad too has petroglyphs showing independent origins of South indian tongues. Finally latest evidence suggests Sangam and Harappan link to show antiquity of Dravidian languages, especially with Mahadevan, Asko Parpola suggest even Harappan script was part of larger world of proto dravidan scripts.
Having said that there is no doubt with greater interactions with vedic aryans, Sanskrit did have an influence on Tamil

@Lost Soul and @Jyoti Iyer don't bother fighting which one came first and which one is the parent of the other. This fight leads to no place of resolution.
Both languages have no common origin both are from different language families.
@Veena there is enough influence of Sanskrit and English on the current spoken form of Dravidian languages. And this does not prove the common origin for these languages. The influence is basically because of the co-existence of people speaking these languages in the same geographical area and trade between them.

Only Aadar can say ‘Polysyllabic Sign Language’, which is an oxymoron because syllable has to do with breath.

Correction: Tamil is not a derivative of Sanskrit. However in India there are 3 main language groups, the Indo-European languages which include Sanskrit and Persian and currently is North Indian Hindustani, the Dravidian group of languages including Tamil, Telgu and a few others and which are spoken surprisingly enough in Pakistan and some other countries of South East Asia. The third and most underrated and under-reasearched language group is that of the Aadivasis/ Tribals which is known as the Munda language group found in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa etc.and is suppose to be a relative of the language spoken by indigenous Australians and according to recent findings is nearly as old as Sanskrit or Tamil if not more.

Great episode as usual guys! If you’re reading this, just one small thing, Varun if you could lower your mic volume or make it similar to Bawa’s that would be fantastic. I keep having to control my volume whenever you talk because it gets so loud 😅
