Bench seats feel roomy and practical. I'd love to see them make a comeback, at least as an option.
An2nio Productions
Ford Taurus had it up to 2007. Chevry impala had it up to 2013 as the last sedan with one...
Also you can cuddle when you or your bf is driving 😍
Than I suggest you don’t have a tall person in your front seat
My friend 5.1 me 5.11 Torino gets into a accident she’s driving guess who’s gas neck pain 40 years late
I remember several bench seats that had a fold-down armrest that also doubled as a center console since they often opened up and sometimes included cup holders
I want them to come back! I like Column Shifters. Also it’s nice being able to exit from either door in front.
My fondest memory of long distance driving was when a cute girl sat right next to me on the front bench seat of a van, and we had full body contact on one side. When I took over driving, she switched to the middle seat to be right next to me again. I really enjoyed that trip, and the bench seat made it that much more enjoyable.
I LOVE bench seats!
Who doesn't!
Honestly I love bench seats wish they were more common. So much more space with them. A good compromise would be making a flip up center console I know a lot of trucks have those.
Garrett Smith
I wish the split bench seat was still an option! Like the impalas of the 2000s or ford taurus.
Chicks love bench seats.
haha
I do too
try going to a drive in theater on a date without a bench seat
I Wish cars still use column shifters and have split bench seats like the 1996 ford taurus for example
Legend has it, Brian Cooley rises from the dead once every 3 months to answer an email
I do love a good bench seat
Bench seats are super comfortable. Very roomy, and a fold up console could be an option to have the best of both worlds. And I gotta disagree. A plush leather bench seat is not dorky.
I certainly hope so 👍🏻
He is alive!
He certainly is!
Roadshow I will admit I was worried for a while, he had just suddenly disappeared and for someone who tweets, writes, and vlogs as much as he does it had me worried.
I dont think benches are dorky! Im in my mid 30's and with autonomous driving on the horizon I think the bench has room for a come back. I dont believe my gen or younger has the negative stigma you refer to. The safety issue would be the only hurtle there. Otherwise i think its a great idea! Obviously you need to have the right application lets not put this in a Miata.
Right I’m only 30 and I’m trying to figure out how I can put a bench seat in my Ford F-150. I love the bench seat it’s more pleasing to me
Autonomous driving is a bad idea but no gear lever is stupid. But bench seats need a come back
Hate bench seats? I can confirm you never had a girlfriend and a car in the 70s, or had to sleep in your car. Bench seats should be an option. Just make a full front airbag and more door or glove box storage.
acchaladka
Like the 1996-2007 ford taurus split benchh seats or even the impalas of the 2000’s
What good are modern saftey features when they add a hundred other features that detract from the that?
Aww man :/ I love bench seats. The reason I like them is that we used to have a grand marquis that could fit the whole 6 of the family! After Bench seats disappeared we had to use all these big vans just to fit us instead a mid size sedan :/ . I think mainly I like them cuz of memories and family, and less how useful they are.
Abd Jr.
talk about environmental factors. Imagine the CAFE standards force cars to do that to try and get people buying sedans instead of minivans by bringing back split bench seats.
Bring back bench seats and drive in movies!!!
They could make it like a truck and have 3 seats in the front, not necessarily a bench.
Then the car would have to be as wide as a truck.
More likely you'd immitate the centre rear seat in most cars.
i.e. Make it an uncomfortable hump. You could even keep the storage under it.
Oosh21 it doesn't need to be bigger
crazy wheel Three bucket seats suitable for 95th percentile American arses takes up a lot of space. Unless you centre console is as wide as your seats you're gonna need more space.
Have you seen to Toyota Hiace, or the Ford Transit front middle?
Not the best seat in the world. Hiace is pretty narrow too!
Oosh21 i think I understand your point, my point is not about that, i have a 2014 accord and a 2002 grand Cherokee, the accord is okay but the jeep cause it has the shifter on the floor it takes too much room and I get tired on my right leg on long trips, I also have a 2011 f150 crew cab with a bench seat, I love the truck cause I have lot more room for my right leg
I want bench seat!
I got into a 2020 ram at this year's car show...my girlfriend got into the passanger seat...when i put the center console up she immediate slid over closer to me and sat close...she very much liked the bench seat..as did i. I miss bench seats a lot...she also hinted to the one extracurricular activity that rhymes with "load ted"
I hate bucket seats + automatic floor shifter being the only option available on cars. It's boring and another thing that turns me off from ever wanting a new car.
I installed bench seat on my great wall deer 4х4 last autumn and i'm so pleased. It's practically and pretty (as for me)
Where are the full episodes???
Many passenger airbags deploy from on top of the dash anyways. Just have it extend to the middle.
I mean it’s definitely possible to any extent. You could get a Ford Taurus Police interceptor sedan and put a front bench seat there (split bench seat).
"Looks like a mattress" ... exactly, and with the price of housing and hotels we will need them back asap.
Would love to see bench seats come back
bench seats are still around in trucks, they have just evolved to be a bench seat\fold down arm rest\center console now.
You can still have a center console and a bench seat. My trucks center console folds up to reveal another seat. Bench seats are just so much more comfortable for cruising and I definitely prefer them. But then again I like older cars.
Daniel Dia same
96-99 Ford Taurus had them too.
Ironinquisitor
Ford Taurus had it up to 2007 which in my opinion was the best split bench seat design.
I hope so! 3 person benches with column shifters are the best!
I don't care about bench seats, just get rid of the stupid center console divider. It is offensive to one's intelligence that carrying empty air in a blob of gray plastic is more important than a proper driving position (and if you're tall, and your knee has nowhere to go on the right side because of the moronic center console, you understand). BTW, as long as the bench seat is reasonably profiled and cushioned, I am fine with it.
I miss split bench seats : (
The airbag argument is bogus, the original vehicles with bench seats didn't even have seat belts until 1967, lol ! Airbags could easily encompass the entire dash as one single rectangular piece. Bench seats are the best, especially when you're young and homeless and or want to get laid. No Generation X without them' there bench seats boy !
I wish the impala still offered that option! Now when I’m old I got to get an old car : (
I hope they are. Modern cars are not big enough for my shoulders.
would be awesome to see it come back
I intentionally seek out pickup trucks with bench seats. I wish the bench seat would make a comeback.
Be a front seat passenger when some goes unconsious and you'll wish you had a bench seat to get to the brake fast instead of grabbing the oh shit bar.
What happened to CNET on Cars?
These short sections are so dumb! I want the full show!!!
It was broken up into video fragments & extra channels in a shameless attempt at more UA-cam views. The question has yet to be properly answered. We're asking for full new episodes!
But UA-cam ad revenue is a function of playtime as well as view count. Plus quality counts! We want the full show!!
Where is CNET on Cars?
I mean you could do what GM did with the b body in the 90`s (or at least the ones I've seen from Cadillac, Chevrolet, and Buick I.E Fleetwood Brougham, Caprice and, Roadmaster ) where they integrated the middle console in the bench seat in well the middle.
Fine, not a bench seat then, but can we all agree that centre consoles are completely fucking useless? Just a waste of space that's reworded into a lame sense of security, aka ''cockpit seating''.
Centre consoles screws over the knees of tall people and hardened city parkers in general. With intact knees, if I find myself a space that has the my side up against a wall, I need to slide across to the other seat with ease without the gear stick making a move on me.
The 04-09 Prius, the Nissan Cube and few others only offer such a luxury.
"can we all agree that centre consoles are completely fucking useless?" -- Amen, I just posted on the same very points, then I found your earlier post.
toyotaprius79 I'm glad I drive a 1993 Ford Taurus GL with a front split bench seat have had to park in busy town's like Gettysburg Pennsylvania along the street parallel parked the small narrow road I was parked on is very busy during the day and had to slide across the passenger side of the front seat to get out of my car to go do what I had to do in town I actually don't mind the bench seat though it's kinda annoying getting a medium size soda while driving and have no cup holders that fits the giant cup they call medium really the cup should be called a large cup not medium damn fast food chains have changed the sizes of there cups in 24 year's I'm a year older than my car I'm 25 years old Born in 1992
That uncle reference was gold. SLIDE ON OVER little guy.
Slide over boy
Super Smelly Bob OH MY GOD I REMEMBER THAT FROM BEING 5😂😂😂😂😂😂
Absolutely awful take on bench seats. Nothing better than a roadtrip with your girl right next to you
Honestly who doesn’t like an old bench seat? They’re more comfy than most modern seats in my opinion and double as a bed for long road trips where you need a break😉
When people have democracy, people know how to rig seats. Step-one, finish-off the nanny-state and chase-away the insurers. Whoever tries to certify parts or engineering-standards, gets trouble. Targetting IEEE, ISO, Ansi, TUV, CE, ... Their standards are proven crap and their hypocrisy is obvious. These have to be contained and restricted to the-west.
Who are the 4 guys who disliked the Video ?
The other presenters ?
As for storage it’s not that hard to make storage space under the seat. Since bench seats, if they’re gonna be one piece, they’re gonna be adjusted to the driver anyways.
Citroën C4 catus. cool car, bench seat, airbag in roof. 5 star encap.
Ok I have 2 girlfriends who love each other and me. Who do I make into a second class citizen and force her to sit in the back seat? Have all auto manufacturers completely lost the sense of the actual human and their needs surpassed by their own egos?
6 years on and car design has only gotten worse.
Automatic gear lever should go back to where God intended it and Big Three used to put it -- on the steering wheel column. Putting it on the floor where stick goes is pointless and pretentious.
“Bench seats are dorky”
This guy must have never sat with his girl next to him as you cruised PCH
Nothing beats a bench seat on a date lol can't tell her, hey climb over the center console and get closer lmao
Bench seats are cool
are the longer Cnet/Cooley on Cars episodes no longer going to be made/published?
Electric vehicles don’t have a transmission or transaxle, how about adding a front bench seat, so I can cuddle up close with my lady while we’re out and about? 🧐. Also, many pickup trucks still offer front bench seats.
He is back !!!! Where have you been ?
Did CNET throw you in a different dimension ?
He's still here, just a busy fella.
hope so!
Wheres cnet on cars
these are all prerecorded a while ago and they just release them periodically to satisfy people. Cooley either left or is om vacation.
We release them shortly after recording them, actually. Thanks for watching!
Roadshow well then where's the full episode! ahahah other presenters are great but new vids are short and not as in depth as onCars
Bench seats are genius. Airbags just need to cover the entire row. Personally I hate bucket and power seats. Store stuff under the seats and in the doors. A manual split bench front seat with high back that reclines flat into a bed would be genius in a two door EV muscle pickup.
Also make then flip to face back in vans!
I hope so
1:16 - Look at that. plain-jane Caprice right there, maybe even a late-'70s Bel-Air. IT'S GOT RADIO DELETE!
not dorky, sleepy. Can stretch out and nap while waiting for wife to finish shopping. I want a couch, not a bucket seat made for someone smaller than me.
Where is CNET on Cars? I miss it
Hello CNET.Can you tell us where is CNET on car?wait two weeks and two weeks and two weeks.still no CNET on car.the show move to other platform or CNET on car is dead..??
CNET & Brian Cooley, are you all DEAF ? Please listen to your diehard fans and let us know if we'll ever see another episode of On Cars so I can decide whether to unsubscribe or not .This answer one email every month crap is not cutting it
You sent almost 2 mins. talking about bench seats..WOW..I would just have answered no & moved on...thumbs up for you
EVs for Donkeys 2018
Why didn’t he talk about split bench seats!
You might lose one place to put your junk but with how far down that fold your gf will give you another place to put it
Regarding video title... tl;dw: no
Reference: Betteridge's Law of Headlines.
;)
I like bench seats more
Snuck in a dam Toyota ad.
At least for trucks.
bucket seats and center consoles are terrible.
Bench seats ARE dorky, and I would hate to cause safety concerns.
FastLikeUNO Just make it an option, if you want to sit in the middle of the bench, that's your risk.
I Sell Air
I wish Chevy Impala and Ford Taurus still offered that option!
the seat is place to put junk...and the uncle thing was weird
Dalton v I'll probably be the creepy Uncle someday I have a sister and brother and one already has a kid I drive a 1993 Ford Taurus GL with the front bench seat
I hope the fuck not! I got so irritated sitting in my parents middle seat in our old truck.
bench seats are dorky. They were perfect for takig girls out. But this guy's never been with a women.
two thumbs down aaaayyy
Lol
OMG hahaha
No, you're dorky!
this is clearly cgi
I assure you, Cooley is a real person.
The front bench seat is dead and I hope it stays dead.
Landon Thomas Why, you poem being squashed into one small section of your car?
Why? You are lame.
Really you don't know anything do you
no
There are bench seats where the middle seat folds over and becomes a center console with an arm rest, cup holders and in some cases storage like in a normal center console :)
That's the best of both worlds imo
I think cars are unnecessarily narrow widthwise. Mostly because cars from Europe and Japan became the dominant form factor, and in there roads are narrow cause the land is small. But I would prefer a larger wider car with 6 seats, like in the 70s and 80s Chevy trucks
Lol
