I don’t see why people insist on “dining” on what is clearly the sewing-and-homework-and-also-some-paperwork-I-will-totally-put-away-later table.

I got rid of my dining room table awhile ago, and changed it into a simple beautiful lounge off my open kitchen area. I moved my storage couch from the living room into the lounge area. People love it when they see it. It opened up the space, and now I can chat with my husband while he is sitting in the lounge, and cook at the same time. No television in the area, just a beautiful view of the back patio and trees. Dining table wasn’t used much. Children grown, one out of the house, so I had a floating table made that seats two; attached it to the other side of my half wall that looks into the kitchen. If any one cared to eat on it, they could. Space more functional now, and the lounge is used more often than when the dining room was there. It’s a hotspot now, but no social media is allowed.
The living room was changed into an enclosed open air Be-living room, a bed and breakfast with living space for guest. The whole concept done within 435 sq ft.

I eat at my kitchen table breakfast /brunch and dinner daily. On weekends, I force myself to eat in our dining room.... It's literally 10 more steps away.... I feel super lazy , but it's totally worth the effort. I refuse to eat on a couch!!! This discipline, actually allows my meal to be a meal vs a non stop nosh session!!

I'm not sure why anyone would think that people no longer have sideboards/buffets in their dining rooms. When they don't, it's usually a decision made because of a lack of square footage. Sideboards/buffets have been around all the decades of my life, my mother's and grandmother's lives, and all the generations before us.

I don't have plates that match the table, I also don't a matching bedroom set, (no thank you, A$#!:*/ Furniture store) I have similar colors yes! Mostly because I don't want everything that everyone else might have.

I totally agree about the lack of proper storage in the dining room. I've been looking for a sideboard with drawers to store flatware and other pieces such as napkins and candles. All I can find are sideboards with shelves which are good too but should not limited to shelves only. Drawers in sideboards used to be standard but not anymore, sadly.

I moved 6 months ago to a smaller home. I bought the oval expandable Mid Century Modern dining table. Also wanted the chairs to be mid century so I bought the Zola chairs. Therefore they do match (supposed a faux paw) but putting another that wasn’t modern would look out of place. These chairs are also low profile and tuck right in which is good for my smaller dining area

    Hi Kiva!
We eat in the kitchen at a side desk like niche with two swivel counter chairs and in front of the kitchen tv. As children eating in any room other than a kitchen was taboo. But as a mother I let my kids eat in the den while watching the big tv. They still do that. Works for us as a family. The dr table is large and mostly used for family gatherings. But not everyday even though it’s in an accessible part of the house. We have to pass through the dining room to get to the den. But that doesn’t stop us from eating in the den. I have a matching table and chairs in the den and it matches the sideboard the china cabinet the curio cabinet and the secretary desk and a little triangle table!😂 I like the set. But I have a huge custom mirror and a nice chandelier and a big enough rug for it all! 😉❤️🥰 I liked that sideboard from Walmart! Good work !

I keep my table pretty cleared off with a single faux cherry blossom bonsai type plant. This way it becomes easy for my grandchildren to use for art activities plus I have a sideboard next to it which I use for a Iight and a few photos. This way it doesn’t become overly crowded in that space. My sideboard is has 3 drawers across the top and 2 shelves which I have matching baskets that hold various necessities. Some for the grandkids. Also, I definitely eat on the sofa. So cozy 😊😊. I rarely eat at the table. I wouldn’t have one if I didn’t need one for the kids and company.

Thanks for the video! You've given me stuff to think about! Having just moved into a place with an actual dining room after almost a decade of living in tiny apartments with microscopic kitchens that couldn't practically fit even a small table and two chairs, I am so damn excited that I am eating almost every meal that I can in the thing. Relaxed breakfast and coffee in the morning! A weekend lunch with the sun streaming in! Dinner in the evenings catching up on the day with my husband! It feels like the biggest goddamn luxury just to have the space to begin with that the urge to rush off to the TV or computer with my meal is considerably diminished. I definitely want to make it look as nice as I possibly can, while keeping it functional.

I don’t have the luxury of having a separate dining room (one day I will) but I do have a decent eat-in kitchen. I love styling my table. Yes I have 2 candles but I enjoy lighting them for dinner sometimes and use them. And yes everything on a tray or lazy Susan in the center so it’s pretty but functional and can be easily moved for food and playing games after dinner. I think runners are much more practical than a whole table cloth but I love a layered table for a special occasion. I am one of those people I do not enjoy eating on the couch. One rule for me, my table is not a drop zone or junk piling spot this way it’s always nice to sit and enjoy your meal.

Choose a complimentary but Not matching sideboard or China cabinet. Add a large rug, Reupholster your chairs in something bold or in two or more fabrics that go well together and a third fabric on the windows. Add two captains chairs or upholstered chairs at the two ends of the table to brake up the matching look of the chairs. These other items add interest and you really don't notice the matching chairs and table.

We always eat at the dining room table. It is just my husband an I now but, even when our 3 sons lived at home, we ate at the table 90 % of the time.

Any advice for installing a wet bar in the dining room? I feel like it would tackle two issues, the enclave of wasted space and adding storage

That’s definitely possible you can DIY it or pay a contractor/designer to do it

I have an issue since my living room & dining room are combined. Its relatively difficult to keep things cohesive but also defined. Everything is currently blank like the freshly painted walls.

I actually do eat at my dinning room table for almost every meal. Otherwise its usually at my desk in my design studio. I HATE trying to balance plate and all on couch arm and folding tv tables......of course, I also don't own a tv and am by nature quite formal, so I am an oddity

We used to eat in the kitchen at our dining table. But since we moved to our new house that has an open concept, my husband and I sit on the couch most of the time, while our three, messy kids are relgated to sit at the dining table. 😆 We can all still see the tv though and that is basically the big shift that happened when we moved - tv at dinner time has indeed become accepted/the norm. Honestly I can't say I think it's a good thing. But it's so nice... 🙈

The hubs and I are 50/50. We eat on tv trays in front of the tv a few times a week. The rest of the time and/or if the meal has the potential to be messy (marinara sauce, tacos, etc) we sit at the dining room table. Our living room rug is white so we don’t take chances, and our dining space was just redone so we like the space

My big issue with styling my dining table is thenheight of the decor. And that is because I want to see my family members when we eat, and pretty much everything is just in the way. Right now I have a plant in the middle of the table (it's a large, round table) and even that is too obstructing of the view, in my opinion. Anyone have any tips for this? Having nothing on the table makes it look SO bare and boring.

Maybe a smaller plant or like someone here mentioned a tray with salt and pepper or pretty decanters, or a tray with fruit

I am using my dining table as a storage because I don't have any other space to put my stuff. It's filled with boxes of storage freezer bags, large pots, a large air fryer. I have no pantry so I had to get a shelf display for pantry foods, my kitchen is tiny. I think maybe I should move to a bigger place...

Please someone explain the rug under the dining table? That is where food and crumbs fall. I want to be able to get all that swept up and mopped for cleanliness, not a haven for wet food morsels. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I actually use my dining table daily and am a sucker for a tablecloth. If I’m alone I have those cotton treated ones that can be wiped off but for Sundays and guests it is a nice tablecloth although not crazy about ironing it later. 😆

we sit are our kitchen table to eat most frequently. We can watch our tv from this space. I have an almost 100+ year old plus harvest table. It expands to allow up to 15 people at it. We keep it plain because we have Sunday night dinners at my house with about 10+ plus people every week. Our biggest problem is finding chairs.
