  • Had 3 bad lower units for the 66 cubic inch blocks. Took the best parts from all 3 to make 1 strong fully operational one. I used a lot of basic tools to get the job done as seen in the videos. Some techniques orthodox and some not so much. Enjoy.

    I’ll tell you what sticks out to me the most is dad and daughter working on the boat motors! That is awesome man! A lot of fathers don’t spend time doing things with their kids and they grow up resenting one another. Better believe my two & threeyear olds are already trying to stay in the garage with dad doing any kind of “work”!

    Great video and so glad I found your channel. I'm somewhat new to outboarding and I just purchased my first "project boat" with a 1975 Mercury 850 outboard. When I took possession, the prop and the prop shaft and carrier (as well as the clutch dog and reverse gear ) were totally separated from the lower unit (in one piece) and lying in the hull of the boat. Upon examining it, I noticed that there were cracks in both the carrier and the carrier retaining nut as well as a large chunk missing from one of the prop blades. I don't know what happened here, but at least I'm hoping that I might be able to fix it myself after watching your video. Thank you so much for uploading it!

I already installed it but I’m sure the cam is upside down because I’m struggling to get it to work. I looked into a fix but haven't found one so now I'm looking into a replacement lower unit. My question is what lower units will interchange with mine ie years, 650,750,850? all the parts are fine so I should be able to swap them over to the new used lower unit. so does shaft length, and gearing matter?

      1. Take the lower completely apart to properly diagnose the issue and rebuild it.

      3. Replace the entire motor

    Awesome Video! Thank you!! Ive got my 1500 150hp taken apart. Starting to put it back together. The Cam Lobe and Pin were worn down so I replaced them. I have all the parts in correct but there is 12mm of movement on the Prop Shaft going in and out. The bearing carrier looks like its all the way in. But maybe not. The key appears to be at the bottom of the cutout, odd. The Retainer isn't on yet - need to but a new one. Im getting worried something is wrong. Bought the motor recently, Runs good. But I never checked FWD/NTL/RVS on it. GRRRR. Any ideas" or is this normal without the retainer in yet? Bearing Carrier doesn't move.

      Thank you sir. The retaining nut is what pushes the carrier into the correct position. Their should be not be any play on the propshaft. Install the retainer incrementally and check the functionality of forward, neutral, and reverse. Hope this helps. Let me know.

      Thank you Sir Doc!! You were correct (as if I questioned it) lol. My next issue is on the shift shaft parts. Three plastic parts on the shift shaft to (I guess) prevent the reverse from either over driving the reverse pin? Or keeping the reverse gear engaged. The parts list manual I have doesnt even show them from what I can see but every video I've researched doesnt explain their orientation or describe the correct installation of them. I have all 3 plastic parts and tried many different ways of putting them in and i cant seem to figure it out. Lol. These go on top of the shift shaft seal. Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED :)

      Your shift cam is likely out of alignment. There should only be 3 turns: Forward, Neutral, and Reverse. Each turn you should hear the cam follower/clutch dog pop into place if it is doing what its supposed to do. Only way to truly verify is to disassemble. Son

    • @MerCSonL6
      @MerCSonL6  5 років тому

      Bind up as in the crankshaft doesn't rotate? Check to make sure the gears are lined up. Also, there's 2 types of gears for these lowers. One for the preloaded pin at the top of the crankshaft and one without. They are not interchangeable. Also check to make sure the shift cam is in the correct position. Let me know. Son.

    I am not sure if it’s L3 or not how can I find out. And yes it engages in forward and in neutral

    • @MerCSonL6
      @MerCSonL6  5 років тому +1

      I'm pretty sure it's an inline 3 cylinder. It should have the "clamshell" cowling. It has the smaller gearcase when compared to l4, l6, and v6's. If its shifting from forward to neutral then the shift cam is likely doing what it is supposed to be doing which is good. The clutch dog could be worn, reverse gear worn, or bearing Carrier is off by a fraction. I suggest loosening the tab washer that holds crown nut in place and tightening (clockwise when looking into the gearcase) an 1/8 of an inch at time checking incrementally if/when the reverse gear engages (be sure shift cam is in reverse position). Use a wrench to shift the shift shaft. Note: it only turns about and 1/8 inch and should "pop" when the shift cam goes from Forward, neutral, to reverse. Hope this helps. Let me know.....

    • @MerCSonL6
      @MerCSonL6  5 років тому +1

      @@homarkbeer absolutely. I would try that first before taking the whole lower apart. If you take it apart you would have to try to locate a clutch dog and/or reverse gear which can be pricey new or difficult to find used. You would also have to potentially replace the crown nut, prop shaft seals, and carrier seal as well. It's hard to diagnose without seeing/hearing exactly what your lower unit is doing while shifting. It is common for the reverse gear and clutch dogs to wear from slow shifting. Hopefully in your case the Carrier is just off by a few thousandths of an inch. Ideally, that would be the best case scenario. Good luck and let me know. Son
