Prepare to be amazed by this historic Heritage Malta site, Saint Paul Catacombs in Rabat Malta. Most thing that surprised me was a stone hinged door.
Serving as a burial ground from Punic, Roman and Byzantine times the St Paul’s Catacombs represent the earliest and largest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta. It’s association to the saint derives from the myth that this cluster of catacombs was once connected with St Paul’s Grotto. Although this remains a myth, recent research shows that the two, originally formed part of a considerably large cemetery just outside of the ancient city of Melite. Indeed, it is now known that the hypogea were located in a cemetery with a very long history of use starting in, at least, the 3rd or 4th c. BC.
The catacombs form a typical complex of interconnected underground Roman cemeteries that were in use up to the 7th, and possibly the 8th centuries AD. They are located at Ħal Bajjada area, which is also known as Tad-Dlam. The area has more than 30 hypogea, of which the main complex, situated within the St Paul’s cluster, comprises a system of interconnected passages and tombs that cover an area over 2000 m2.
The entrance to the main complex leads to two large halls, adorned with pillars made to resemble Doric columns, and painted plasters most of which have now disappeared. These main halls are equipped with two circular tables set in a low platform with which resemble the reclining couch in the triclinium present in Roman houses. Hewn out in one piece from the living rock these triclinia were probably used to host commemorative meals during the annual festival of the dead.
Part of the catacombs were reutilised during the re-Christianisation of the Island, around the 13th century, when an open space was re-cut and used as a Christian shrine decorated with murals. The site was cleared and investigated in 1894 by Dr A.A. Caruana, the pioneer of Christian era archaeology in Malta.

My nephew favourite thing to see in Malta were St Paul's catacombs. He was very excited to be there when my brothers family were visiting Malta in June this year.

I have lived in Malta over 30 years & my eldest son attended St Paul's Missionary College but I never visited this amazing historical site. Am astounded by how massive it is, looks well worth a visit. Thanks for the interesting video.

I thought I had been to St Paul’s Catacombs but watching this, apparently not - it seems that went to St Paul’s Grotto and ‘underground area’ which also includes catacombs (they’re very similar, maybe they were connected at one point, I’m not sure!) as well as underground air raid shelters, plus entry to the Wignacourt Museum - I really recommend it! Maybe next time I’m in Malta I’ll visit these ones.

I was not aware of this very interesting place in Rabat. The entrance is very well set out and I love old pottery. I cannot believe the depth of this place. You can see on and on and on. I don't think I would like it with bodies in. It must have smelt bad. I do not think I would want to eat there either. The shapes are very interesting too. The price is very reasonable. Where are all the bodies now? Anyway your video is appreciated from here in England. 🙏👍

@PierreFarrugia Thank you ..I have watch a few of your videos..I was raised in Malta from 1 year old till 9 year old I left to go to America I have family on my father side..I have been back.I explored all the well know sites with family ..I plan to revisit with trekking some of your sites in mind ...I have listened to Paul Cook for years never knew he was Malteser..I enjoy and fascinated with ancient history of Malta..The Starfort of Valleta is incredible..Hopefully you can provide a guide or direction when I visit thank you for your time ..Keep up the great VIDS

To me it does not seem very logical to burry people in carved out caves and carved out walls in a very haphazard way. Seem like a lot of work for dead bodies.
I lost loved ones and it’s a big deal. I think it’s done all over the world, like egypt , what are your views then ?
@@PierreFarrugia I would think it is easer to burry the bodies at sea. imagine dragging a dead body way to the back of one those low arched compartments .
