Rustival broke 2 of my cars! Mini ABS sensor & Alfa 145 thermostat (again)

  • I took 4 cars to Rustival last month, thats a total of over 1200 miles driven so no surprise there were casualties...the R50 Mini has more lights than Vegas on the dash and one was real (ABS warning) and the Alfa nearly dodnt make it home when the recently changed thermostat started coming apart...

    RE ABS, as with most cars its generally the wiring in the arch area. Particularly if there is a section of wire which moves up and down with the suspension. Eventually the copper snaps internally. Even though the wire may visibly look ok. So check wiring back using a multimeter on continuity. Cut out wire section and replace as needed.

    Hey Matt, the reason you had a new tire pressure warning light on the Mini is it uses the ABS wheel speed sensor to measure if one wheel is spinning too fast, as low tire pressure will cause the wheel to be slightly smaller in circumference. So it’s basically two separate symptoms of the same problem 😅

  • @supervitz7178
    @supervitz7178 Місяць тому +3

    Could be the tone ring as you say or a wheel bearing. If the bearing has play, then the assembly could be spinning with a wobble on it and thus digging a groove into the ABS sensor.

    It's another one of those 5 minute job thingies that just blow up into a whole 'right I need to get some new parts things rendering the car undrivable in some cases. I remember changing an 'A' series thermostat that the housing just would not budge in the late 80's that ended up with the housing needing to be replaced following eventual removal. The next time I had to replace a thermostat on a different 'A' series engine having bought a new housing at the same time as the thermostat (expecting a re-run of the previous fun) it took five minutes and I need not have got a new housing as it all came apart brilliantly. Anyway great progress on the Alfa. I've yet to experience the old Mini circus of doom fault light syndrome so I might just leave these to one side on possible future classic purchases. I'd like another classic Mini but my current want is a 2CV at some point. Many thanks for sharing.

    Replacing the abs sensor was an easy job like you said! 😂😂😂 but sadly it wasn’t the problem! Probably the reading ring is corroded and damaged the old sensor as you noticed ! I don’t know if you can replace it separate from the wheel bearing!? Most of the time they are integrated in the wheel bearing! You can test the reading ring with a simple tool! It’s a little transparant card with metal dust in it ! When you lay the card on the ring you can see if the 0:20 tiny magnets are intact! You can see the magnets then because the metal dust collects itself above the magnets! Good luck Matt and 👍🏻👍🏻 🆙 like allways!

    I changed the thermostat on my 147 1.6 and I'm sure there was a bleed screw even if it was 8 years ago.
    Yours may have gone pop because you didn't bleed it properly 3 years ago and only doing short journeys didn't bring the problem to the surface until now.
    Also run your heater on hot when doing the bleed , just open the screw on the radiator to bleed .

    What a good idea to have a aluminum housing with a plastic hose connection swaged into the end. What could possibly go wrong? I haven't done much work on Mini's but if the old sensor has that wear, then something is loose on the hub sensor ring and that's why the light is remaining on. Hopefully it hasn't damaged the new part.

    Have a look at the wiring loom up by the ABS pump - it has a habit of chaffing through and losing comms to the wheel sensors.
    Cheap ABS sensors are a false economy on the R50 series Mini. Stick with branded ones - I used to use Delphi on mine when they died - cheap ones would never let the codes clear.

  • @huwdavies6650
    @huwdavies6650 Місяць тому

    I don't know if that's how it works on a mini, but a lot of TPMS systems rather than using the tyre valves, they actually use the abs wheel speed sensors to determine if a tyre has lost pressure. So if an ABS sensor fails it could throw up the TPMS warning light as well as the ABS warning light.

Ethylene Glycol does inhibit corrosion but is highly flammable and toxic (causes symptoms of being very drunk, then death). Many an RAF Pilot discovered the flammability when his Merlin engine erupted in flame from a coolant leak, 100% Ethylene Glycol.

    Matt, as a mechanic in Australia the same rules apply. For critical parts such as ABS, coolant parts etc never ever use cheap and nasty parts. Always always buy the OEM or a higher quality branded product. I can tell you from my own experience of running a shop for the last 9 years.

    I did a wheel speed sensor on my Mk1 Octavia a few months back (i had to drill and hammer it out, but thats another story) and recall i had to sort of reprogramme it in with my VAGCOM diagnostics to get the car systems to recognise the new sensor and get the warning light to go out, it was a bit more involved that just clearing the code. Im not sure if Minis would be the similar? 🤔 Also perhaps check the distance of the sensor tip from the reluctor ring, they can be quite sensitive to spacing on some cars. No experience with minis though!

    On the Alfa: I hate plastic parts that are exposed to hot coolant. I’ve had a lot of problems with that on my son’s Passat. On the Mini: At least the sensor didn’t break off in the knuckle/hub. That’s what I was expecting. Hondas are bad to do that, even if they don’t appear to be rusty. Good luck sorting that out.

    Sounds a bit crazy but check the ABS pins on the car haven't bent, had that once when I wasn't concentrating and bent a pin put the plug together. Alternatively swap the OSF sensor for the NSF and see if the readings swap over, least then you can rule out a dodgy new sensor. Check for any broken wires on the car end loom, could be an electrical issue instead. Know the ABS rings can swell up and (sometimes) split on BMWs (mainly rwd not newer 1 series being fwd) and they give iffy readings causing ABS issues but never had it on a Mini (R50 or newer).

    The Volvo could not manage 300 miles on a single tank? Either the 2 litre is dreadfully thirsty by nature or there is something very wrong. My guess is that the O² sensor is old and dirty and/or the catalytic converter is plugged. My 90 240 wagon, 2.3 litre and automatic gearbox, would do that and quite a bit more on a clean run like that. It would, at a pinch, do just over 450 miles on a single tank.
    Here's hoping the Alpha is working properly now. It may be that it needed renewing early, but still easily done.
