  • Cimitero Monumentale di Milano, Milan, Italy - stunning Monumental Cemetery, Cimitero Monumentale di Milano, Cimitero Monumentale in Milan. Let's travel to Italy and let's visit the city of Milan and Europe's most magnificent cemetery, The Cimitero Monumentale ("Monumental Cemetery") which is the two largest cemetery in Milan (Milano) Italy. Monumental Cemetery, Cimitero Monumentale, is noted for the abundance of artistic tombs and monuments.
    Cimitero Monumentale was designed by the architect Carlo Maciachini (1818-1899), it was planned to consolidate a number of small cemeteries that used to be scattered around the city into a single location.
    Cimitero Monumentale was officially opened in 1866, it has since then been filled with a wide range of contemporary and classical Italian sculptures as well as Greek temples, elaborate obelisks, and other original works such as a scaled-down version of the Trajan's Column. Many of the tombs at Cimitero Monumentale belong to noted industrialist dynasties, and were designed by artists such as Adolfo Wildt, Giò Ponti, Arturo Martini, Dante Parini, Lucio Fontana, Medardo Rosso, Giacomo Manzù, Floriano Bodini, and Giò Pomodoro.

    Truly amazing and beautiful. These convey the emotions of grief and even joy even better than much of the art that is painted or hanging on the walls of museums and churches. Excellent selection of music as well.

    Le tombe di questo Cimitero sono perpetue, ovvero rimangono di proprietà delle famiglie che le hanno acquistate per sempre a differenza di altri cimiteri ove la concessione dura 99 anni. Mio nonno è mia nonna riposano in questo Cimitero in una tomba con 5 posti più 6 ossari. Io vado spesso a "trovarli" e ogni volta rimango affascinato dalla magnificenza silenziosa di queste opere d'arte.

    "Let's do it!" ... This is THE one, Vic! The most beautiful cemetery I've seen you film so far!! All of the statuary is spectacularly beautiful .. so many of them are weeping ladies, particularly in grief-stricken repose over the graves of their husbands or children .. very thought provoking. And those incredible mausoleums!! I can't imagine the wealth that's been poured into some of the wedding-cake, Greek and Roman Church, Columnar, and Parthenon style etc mausoleums!! The whole cemetery must be for only the wealthiest people alive .. I mean .. dead. And you always match your music so appropriately .. Of course the first piece is the first movement of Beethoven's Sonata in C# Minor .. I learned it at the age of 12 for my Grade 6 Piano exam, and I've played it quite regularly ever since : ) But I must say that I've never heard it performed quite this fast before .. it's usually somewhat slower and with much more rubato than this - which actually makes it much more difficult to control the delivery of the intended beauty in each and every triplet .. In fact, I always know when I've played it perfectly and truly beautifully - because when I have I always feel absolutely emotionally exhausted and physically spent by the final!! I also love Vangelis .. you have excellent taste in music, Vic!! But I still think that your video of the coffins of La Recoleta cemetery is your finest video ever .. even if the statuary here in the Monumental Cemetery is the most beautiful of any other cemetery! Well done, and thank you so much for sharing. I've loved walking through cemeteries since I was a child because they're just fascinating places that are so full of history and dark portent .. I often wonder who the people were and why their graves are tended - or aren't. I'll often pull the weeds from an old and unkempt grave just because I'm there and they obviously haven't been visited in a very long while. There's a question I've been wanting to ask you .. do you ever come across things like coins, marbles, or other small objects on graves? And if so,do you know what they are for? Kind thanks for your time, Vic .. I know that you try to answer everyone and I feel so privileged when you do : )

    • @VicStefanu
      @VicStefanu  6 років тому +1

      Hi, thank you for your wonderful comments! I started videotaping cemeteries a few years ago (La Recoleta was one of my first videos) and very soon I realised that these places were ideal for me in order to express myself artistically (subject, camera movement, etc). Now, a few years later, I have such a huge selection of videos from around the world, many more videos are coming up of cemeteries from Germany and Austria. I used to add musical pieces from my album collection (I am glad you recognised the music of Vangelis..) until I realised that by doing so, I was excluding the videos from being promoted by youtube (because they contained music that someone owned the intellectual property rights on), this is why in my latest videos I added Chopin's Funeral March (which is ok for youtube) and which quickly attained over 10,000 views. I always find small objects around the graves but I never touch or remove anything, I only remove small pieces of garbage (rubbish) if necessary. The objects are (almost always) related to the person's everyday life; in Greece, for example, they will leave small metal cars on the grave if the dead person was a man that liked cars.. Also, if I can help it at all, I try not to step on the graves, I rarely do so and only at the edges so that I can take the shot.. Again, thank you for your comments, they show to me that you are a highly educated and a very cultured person, if I may say so....

    Didn't lilke the sculptures in this cemetery look quite primitive compared to the stunning ones in the cemeteries in Havana,Alexandria and beuos Aries. A lot seemed to have been cast in bronze was it the in thing at the time?

    • @VicStefanu
      @VicStefanu  6 років тому +1

      Good point that are raising here.. the marble statues fell out of favor around the beginning of the 20th century and they were replaced by bronze statues..
