I, for one, thought they were fun new discoverable items. I don't think everything needs to "add" so much to a game that it upsets balance or becomes a new big money maker. I feel like it should be said that carrots and broccoli used to be added in in the old PPJA crops mods, and carrots grew in three days there, too. For free items, I think they're a good time investment.
Yeah they're free so I don't see why people are so upset about them. Plus if you start a new game and find carrots early they're a fantastic energy source for early game. I usually use fish and salmonberries for that but now I'm hoping to find carrots. They give 3 times the energy as salmonberries do. That's insane
We're just missing cooking recipes that actually use the new crops. I'm definitely more of a min-maxer, but I'm sure plenty of other players out there would appreciate being able to make more dishes just for the fun of it, for immersion, etc.
I wouldnt be necessarily mad, but disappointed with adding pointless crops. Adding more stuff with no real use just isn't very interesting. That said, gold per day isnt everything. That said, i do think these do fill a niche. The Carrot is a really nice supplement early game. The powdermelon is a winder crop, which is awesome in and of itself. The others i havn't really looked at.
Not to be the one to bring up mods but... the horse overhaul mod let's you pet and feed your horse and I haven't sold a single apple in my current file because that's one of the items horses *love* to eat so I feed him an apple a day
People saying things like carrots are useless when they give THREE TIMES as much energy as salmonberries do and they only take 3 days to grow. Thats a game changer for early game. Now i wont have to worry about energy early game anymore
For the first two weeks, anyway. Once salmonberries show up, it's easy to just run around and collect dozens of them, whereas carrot seeds feel rather more limited. (I mean I'll grow them anyway because free seeds, but I'm too used to just spring onions and field snacks for those first two weeks.)
@@jamesdinius7769 They take 2 energy to water, and give 75. 3 salmonberries would save you 6 energy. But you'd be wasting more time eating them, they sell for less, and it takes a lot of time to even get to them. I dunno, I'd rather eat one carrot than 3 salmonberries. @@jonp1952 "2 energy to water and give 75" a) you would need to water twice, and given the assumption here is generally early game, that is 4 energy. b) Watering isn't the only requirement, as you have to Hoe a place for the seed to go as well as hoeing the seeds out of the ground, removing even more of the value of this energy generation. (it's now 6.67-8 energy into 75) c) Comparing to Salmonberries is valid, but if we think of early game you also have to compare to Field Snacks and Fish as again using energy to farm isn't only comparable to one thing, i'd argue that Fishing is better for profit (potentially same energy cost, decent chunk of fish that are worth more), and Field Snacks is better because your generating more useful items (Wood) Carrot's definitely aren't useless, but i don't think they are good compared to the other things you can use your energy on
You can get berries on masse. I missed salmonberries on my first save, but I gathered as many blackberries on the first fall and they lasted me all the way to the next year blackberry season with quite a few to spare (and I didn't have botanist on that first year)
I mean, yeah. That's pretty accurate. Abigail and Sam are basically the romance options that feel more approachable to young players and kids, while being old enough for it to not be too creepy if an adult player dated them.
@@Phatnaru0002Eh, could be worse... which is the case if you play with SVExpanded or Ridgeside Village. Sophia and Blair from each mod respectively are really, really creepy marriage candidates for an adult player.
@@markopusic8258I guess I’ve never understood why people say that about Sophia? At least in comparison to Abigail, who lives with her parents, and whose heart events feel like they’re all about sneaking out of the house like a high school student. Add that to the fact that she lives alone and owns a winery, and I have a hard time seeing her as any younger than 21(as opposed to Abigail who I thought was like 16 in my first playthrough).
It actually threw me for a loop that we didn't have carrots in Stardew Valley before this update! My favorite veggie lacking in one of my favorite (farming) games! How did I not realize we didn't have carrots until now xD I'm happy we have carrots in SV now, even if they may or may not be that good.

There's a really good mod for the new crops called Hidden Crop Recipes (found on Nexusmods) that adds cooking recipes for all the new crops. The new crops are great, but having them involved in cooking makes them feel more integrated into the game for me. Also if you're speedy with unlocking the greenhouse, Getting Racoon shop open before winter is very possible, and Powdermelon seeds for pinecones is probably one of the best shop deals in the game.
@@slwrabbits That's because about 2/3rds of all the trees on your farm and in Cindersap Forest are pine trees. If you clear cut both, you'll end up with in the realm of 60 - 70 pinecones and 15 - 30 maple seeds and acorns.
On one hand I'm relieved we don't need to cook more recipes for perfection, but..... on the other hand it's kinda sad these plants aren't used in any dishes. Like c'mon it's the carrot and broccoli!😢
Also, 6:04 CORRECTION Despite not being mentioned ANYWHERE for some reason... in 1.6 Edible forage can be used in Preserve Jars and Kegs. So you CAN pickle/juice the Snow Yams/Roots now. (crystal fruit always could be Jammed/Wined) You can even Pickle Edible Mushrooms as well. Purple Mushrooms and Chanterelle go pretty hard in Jars.
Pickling the mushrooms from my mushroom logs would increase the profits by so much, that's good to know! Although it would take... alot... of perserves jars.
It's in the Stardew Valley Wiki, which has been getting updated steadily since the 1.6 update. What annoyed me early on was that everyone was losing their minds that you could now eat mayonnaise, nobody was mentioning that you could also eat jelly and pickles, some of which have better health and energy stats than mayo.
@@danielthompson392I think eating mayo in front of NPCs should either give you the rummaging through trash reaction or at least a drop of sweat emote. It's... unnerving
They should really add a re-balancee energy economy mode where all consumables besides energy tonic heal half the energy, but the bathhouse is also 3 times faster. (I also wish instead of a weird giant building it was just a natural hotspring)
People hate the new crops? I LOVE them. One, they give you a reason to look for artifact spots after you get all the books and artifacts. Two, I don''t mind that they may not sell the absolute best without optimization because, again, I see it as free food for the mines. Three, I like the variety. I go out of my way to hunt down these crops, especially the carrots. Super smart to have such a quick crop in spring since you're scrambling for an easy and cheap source of food, especially if you're new to the game.
"Useless" crops is such a terrible take in general. Why is Stardew Valley, a relaxing farm sim, min maxed so hard in the first place? Grow whatever, man. Stop worrying so much about profits and just build a cozy farm.
Stardew Valley is especially tailored and programmed to reward those with stellar planning but also accommodate those who want a cozy game. At the end of the day, play how you want and don't try to tell others what to do because your own preferences.
Carrots are just so broken for energy early game, which has always been my biggest struggle. Before that first (or even second) star drop it feels like I’m always running out of energy because I don’t have money for salads or cows for cheese yet. Carrots with their quick grow time fixed this for me!
I never found energy hard to get early game. I rush to ger Foraging level 4 by Salmonberry season so I get 2 berries per bush, which gives me around 200 by the time it's over. Those easily last long enough to Blackberry Season, and by the time Spring rolls around again, I have level 8 Foraging if not level 10, and energy troubles are a thing of the past.
@dwanedibly8129 that's exactly what I did. Only thing I did differently was fish like crazy until salmonberry season then in between fishing I'd get the foraging level up. Once you have salmonberries and you get to the bottom of the mine in a decent amount of time to get that stardrop and be able to make quality sprinklers you're golden for energy since you dont have to water
@@dwanedibly8129 depends on the amount of crops you have. If you have maybe 100, its fine, but smth like 500 ll take some time and also a lot of energy for every day.
@@dwanedibly8129Yeah, to put carrots further in perspective, one carrot gives as much energy as three salmonberries. They're big cheap chunks of energy for those first two weeks, though.
im fine with them not being huge money makers. it was just a nice surprise and i love the giant crops so a new one is neat! one from every season, very satisfying. the way the brocoli looks is so funny i just love it. i personally enjoy the new crops and always plant them. it also helps out early on bc you're so strapped for cash that its just a lil extra income - free money!
Plus it gives you a crop to grow (I know the winter seeds are a thing) so when spring rolls around you don't have to hoe everything again which saves a lot of time
Don't forget the most important part: last I checked, they don't require watering, which it great if you don't have your sprinklers set up yet (somehow)
Just as a correction, with the 1.6 update now winter forageables can be put in preserve jars and kegs! I recommend using crystal fruit as it gives a nice profit
You could already do that with Crystal Fruit since it's, well, considered a fruit. Being able to do it with the Snow Yam and Winter Root is new, though, yeah.
It's also really easy to harvest pine cones so you can get more powdermelon seeds from the raccoons, so there's another advantage over winter forage seeds.
@@salmence100 I wish we could sub them for it, at least, sort of like how duck and ostrich eggs can count as regular eggs for recipes. (Even if that is obviously a hideously bad use for them)
You make 22,798,440 gold per year planting carrots playing on the standard farm planting on it and ginger island every day and turning them into pickles.
The biggest benefit of the Powder Melons is absolutely the farming experience, I already find foraging the easiest skill to level up, I nearly always have a higher foraging level compared to farming level.
One small correction near the end: If you've progressed far enough in the giant stump quest, you can trade with Mrs. Raccoon for the new seasonal seeds! EDIT: He mentioned it at 0:35 and I somehow missed it!
I really like the new crops, carrot and squash are great for early game energy. I really could care less about the money these crops could make, personally I like how they just complete the game, if that makes sense. Not everything needs to have "value" or tie in with the game entirely to be able to be good
@@Demonicrow Grow time has nothing to do with it. The video is wrong about that. You will get next season's seeds 1 week before the start of the next season, regardless of grow time.
I haven't watched the video yet so I'll add my preemptive two cents: the powdermelons are a much more pleasant way to keep fertilized fields going over winter instead of just using fiber seeds, plus the giant crop version is beautiful!! i plant them all winter and use them to fill up my dehydrators whenever i dont have anything better to put in them. I don't do much with the summer squash and broccoli beyond just pickling for fun. The carrots though? That's a god-tier crop. With agriculturist and deluxe speed gro, they only take one day, which is awesome. I use them in my greenhouse or ginger island whenever I don't know what to plant. They've become my endgame food source too. Whenever I harvest them, I keep all the gold quality ones in my inventory to eat, turn the regular ones back into seeds and hang on to the silver ones. People always recommend using gold quality cheese on skull caverns runs but I'd much rather eat a 52 gold item than a 483 gold item just for some health. I find most of the cheese healing just gets wasted by overflowing anyway. Plus, it's way more fun to feed my horse a carrot when I'm eating them as well- it feels like sharing my snack with a friend :3
I think something worth pointing out is that, once you're getting into winter of years one and two, you've probably gotten to a point where you're starting to chop down a lot of trees for wood to make new farm buildings, and of course kegs. So if you have done that in the Mountains, on the Back Path to the Mountains, or even in Cindersap, most of all those trees are going to be giving you pinecones. This means that of all the seeds you'll have to trade, powdermelons will be the most plentiful, and something you can have prepared before the winter forageable seeds. (In my case I had a couple hundred powdermelon seeds, because I was compulsively planting and re-harvesting pine cones as a tree-farm in the desert, so that I'd have a good amount of wood to get myself started.)
carrots make me really happy honestly cause i like the feeling of seeing a crop is done and i end up with a ton of seeds for them anyway genuinely love how fast they grow they also help because i can’t always get enough seeds to fill spots that’ll grow in the time i have left
you can also get the seeds in the normal mines (not sure about skull cavern i havent gotten that far in my 1.6 file, but ive planted so much summer squash from grinding out the normal mine floors)
I mean carrots speeding up your horse for a day is good enough to make saving all but one (for the shipping 1 of every item part of perfection) until you can get things like obelisks. I do find it a bit weird how there weren't new recipes added with these new crops, like carrot cake for carrots, broccoli cheese soup for broccoli and something for powdermelon and summer squash (I don't really know what squash is used for tbh)
I just started playing today, and carrots have been really helpful for me going into the mines because they give a lot of health and energy compared to other things
i love any new items !! and honestly if you get loads of these, theyre pretty great !! the next season seeds thing is also really handy :D my only niggle is the integration in recipes but there'll already be mods for that by now !!
Winter forageables (except crocus and holly, but holly doesn't come from seeds) can be put into preserve jars and kegs as of 1.6, and crystal fruit can be put into the dehydrator. Also having a 250% on seeds is better in my mind than the 200% from seed maker. Or you can seed maker the winter roots and sell the rest. I love the new crops, but never underestimate winter forage.
While I hadn't done the profit math on carrots, I was immediately struck by how much energy they gave. This let me chop down nearly every tree in town in the first few days of my new playthrough lol
*Points to comment* Look mum, I'm on TV! Great video as always! I do still stand by what I said - the role of 'free seeds you can find out and about' was already filled by mixed seeds, so the wild crops are kinda pointless in that regard, but it's nice to see the niches that they can provide as 'more reliable' freebies. For fun, here's the calcs for base profit/day of mixed seeds: Spring: (175/12 (cauliflower) + 1.25 x 80/6 (potato, accounting for extra potatoes) + 2 x 35/4 (parsnip, which is twice as likely))/4 = 12.19g/day Summer: (11 x 50/54 (corn grown on 1st Summer) + 8 x 40/26 (hot pepper grown on 1st) + 90/6 (radish) + 25/4 (wheat))/4 = 10.93g/day Fall: (160/8 (artichoke) + 4 x 50/26 (corn grown on 1st Fall) + 5 x 60/25 (eggplant grown on 1st) + 320/13 (pumpkin))/4 = 16.08g/day Bonus Ginger Island! (note that regrow crops don't die): (3 x 50/4 (blueberries) + 250/12 (melon) + 300/7 (pineapple) + 220/13 (rhubarb))/4 = 29.53g/day I could try and spin it as 'oh the spring and fall ones are actually more profitable than the wild crops' but let's be honest: just plant any freebies you get, at least in Y1, wild or mixed. They're FREE. (Later years you may want to hold onto mixed seeds for Fiber Seeds).
Winter Seeds: The Winter Root, Snow Yam, and Crystal Fruit can all be put into preserve jars, and kegs, Crystal Fruit being the only one that can go into the dehydrator.
When I saw carrots energy value I was blown away and figured that the new crops would either all be for an energy source, or have their own gimmick, with Carrots being early game (and even mid game) energy, but the others just... did not deliver. i was confused
I primarily use the new crops for energie in the mines. Especially in early gameplay these are a game changer in how much energy they give you and they are free.
EDIT: Ignore my comment, I forgot how speed-gro behaves I've got a counter-point about those carrots and the issue is the Deluxe speed-gro. Deluxe speed-gro at Pierre's is 150g. Oasis on thursday it's 80g. So with those options you've already spent way more than the carrot will give. Crafting them is effectively free, but you'd be spending a decent chunk of time gathering bone fragments and pine resin. Bone Mill has a similar problem, and you aren't guaranteed to get Deluxe speed grow anyway. The odds you'd be able to buy it straight from the desert festival is dismal but doable, but even then they'd only be available when the desert festival is going on anyway. I submit that unless you already have a pine-tapper farm setup (remembering that bone nodes are daily only, and farming skeles requires time fighting them), while *technically* carrots can pull more money than starfruit, feasibly it's moot. Unless you farm Hyper Speed-gro from Qi
@@Habik2 you wont get that much seeds, i also dont think you want to spend every day with planting and harvesting your carrots. Strawberries or Coffe is just better.
@@AlienGurke This exactly. If you want to spend every day harvesting (and have an ungodly number of kegs), Hops are the undisputed king of profit. The problem is that they are way too time intensive.
Before watching the video I really liked the new crops in my newest playthrough, the carrots especially were a reaaaally good food source in the early game
I love using the new crops as food because they're so easy to obtain and give a lot of energy, summer squash in particular gives such a ridiculous amount of food I find myself not buying even a single salad the entire season
I always assumed that they were alternate energy and health sources as they don't take too long to grow, some regrow and I also don't need to buy a ton of salads to dive into the skull caverns.
I just started a playthrough on a wilderness farm and carrots have been amazing. I just carry a stack of them and now I’m not buying salads any more or using my fish that I could be selling or turning into Sashimi. With a 4 day grow time too you could get lucky and have some ready to pick right when the mines first open up.
The powder melon can be used to craft the farmer pants. Much easier than crafting from a pinapple or strawberry. The others you just need to wait and play the game, wild plum and cranberries. The powerdermelon seeds are orange color dye. I be working on a wardrobe in stardew to pimp myself out for the wife and to go to events in game. Plus its not an aspect I ever messed with.
I definitely love carrots, they're so fast amd are great for filling in spots around the end of the season, and a slight bonus is that its nice for keeping fertilized soil from disappearing when the season changes
For Year 1, the only free energy items that come close to carrots are the fishing jellies. Which sell for more than carrots if you just need raw energy.
I'm just happy they aren't necessary for cooking for getting perfection. Although ig if there's another update Concernedape will probably add recipes for them
i do actually appreciate there being a winter seed besides forage able crops, both because they're prettier, and also because I don't need multiple powder melons to make a single seed pack. I've already been using carrots to aid in the qi crop challenge, and the short turn around, plus not being necessarily a valuable crop means I don't mind harvesting after several days of them being ready, but also I can harvest next days if i have enough beans.
given that half the crops in spring have 4, 6 or 12 day growth cycles, and you're likely to have a bunch of empty patches come day 25, carrots are a great way to fill out all that extra space and give you something to do for those last 3 days.
The seeds for the next season actually crop up as early as the 22nd of each month, which is when you can start harvesting your daily tea! So, you really do have a full week to get next season's seeds. Including barrels and boxes in any mine or the volcano!
All they need to do is add one tailoring outfit you can create for each, make sure at least one villager likes one of each, and add in a minimum of two crafting recipes for each crop to make them automatically fantastic additions in my eyes.
I liked the new crops! I honestly hadn't even realized they can be so profittable, because I haven't been able to get over how great of a constant easy food source they are. I can eat one season of summer squash for months just off of the seeds I find in dig spots and i love it
I’ve been treating them similarly to how I treat mixed seeds. If I have empty crop space, then they’re an easy answer. Even better the spots don’t give the seeds if there aren’t enough days to grow them.
I think that one place that these items really shine is with the new buff to preserved products that makes it so that you get both health & energy from jellies and pickles. For fruits, using a preserve jar is a flat doubling of its base health & energy, which means the only time you're losing out on energy is when you're preserving iridium quality crops. It's a similar story for vegetables, but there you lose out at gold quality instead. Pickled carrots give around 130 energy per jar, making it probably the best energy source you can get for spring year 2.
Isn't...anything the best energy source y2? I'm playing my first playthrough now(technically I've played the first spring and summer once before, but not beyond) and by y2 I normally have 100-300K floating around at any given time. If I used my tools 24/7 I couldn't run out of energy if I wanted to
@@orionweiss5418 It is possible to have the resources to never run out of energy left over from year 1. It's just that if you're going on a mining expedition, and every slot matters, pickled carrots are a great option that's quick to grow and just 3 is enough to almost completely restore your energy from next to empty to what it's likely to be capped at for the start of year 2. Sure you could just eat whatever you have lying around, but when inventory slots matter or you don't feel like eating a half-dozen items to get back to full, pickled carrots are a very convenient option. I mean they're not gonna beat iridium magma caps, but they're certainly no slouch either.
I started a save in 1.6 and I never knew those animated grass spots were actually a bunch of free seeds. I did notice them but just thought they were just decor so I lost some free seeds but oh well.
Carrots are amazing for the early game, and Powder Melons are growable in Winter. Even if the Squash and Broccoli to me feel underwhelming, the other two 100% see use from me. Having both to help out with farming and Foraging EXP while making some money is pretty awesome, and im glad i now do that
Yeah, seeds are neat, but trading mystery boxes for magic rock candy? That immediately solved my feeling of "okay the mystery boxes are neat, but after a while, the reward items are just pocket change".
I can get more winter seeds if i just use the winter root in a seed maker, then i sell the flower, put the crystal fruit into kegs and keep the winter yam as my carry around if i need energy and health if i go into the mines, cavern or dungeon im in fall of year too and i still have a little over 100 winter yams in my inventory while i have 200 + winter seeds next to my seed maker waiting to be planted.
I absolutely love them cause they're great in the mines! Especially in the first year with carrots 😀 I absolutely adore the texture for the powder melon, it looks so magical 😂 On another note, ive always been confused if i should always sell my havests that has stars or not, have you made a video about something like that or can make a video about it? Maybe also a video about when to sell stuff and whats a good idea to hoard? 🙏
I’m not 100% sure this is a new feature or not, but some forage can be used in Kegs and Preserves Jars. This would cut into the amount of seeds you could replant, but we’re also trying to profit off of these Edit: You can also place the forage required for Wild Seeds into a seed maker to obtain them easier
Carrots rlly are a life saver during my new run. I'm in year one and my energy is often quickly depleted so having these extra crops help a lot with that + fill in empty plot spaces!
I think carrots are also super helpful for getting your farming skill up in early game. They give you the same amount of XP per harvest as parsnips (8), but in half of the time. As someone who sets it and forgets it in terms of their cropfield at the start of a season, I can now easily break farming level 4 in the first spring.
i feel like the issue is how you find them. to me, they should be a bit rarer, BUT once you find them, you could get a sidequest to show them to either pierre/joja or demetrius and get the ability to buy them from then on.
Carrots are pretty amazing--they are the fastest growing crop in the game and give tons of energy early. However, if you could buy them directly in full 999 stacks, they would be quite broken. You can just plant them in the ground and leave them alone; the rains alone for spring will grow them. It's free energy and farming XP early. The rest are trash however.
Not everything needs to be great, sometimes it's just cool to have a new option, all the better if the option is genuinely good or in some way unique, but it doesn't always need to be

How did I not realize we didn't have carrots until now xD

That's really good to know. I always have more pinecones than I need, and have never figured out why.
@@slwrabbits That's because about 2/3rds of all the trees on your farm and in Cindersap Forest are pine trees. If you clear cut both, you'll end up with in the realm of 60 - 70 pinecones and 15 - 30 maple seeds and acorns.
@@Skeloperchyep, the bottom left corner of the basic farm is 90% pine trees.

Despite not being mentioned ANYWHERE for some reason... in 1.6 Edible forage can be used in Preserve Jars and Kegs. So you CAN pickle/juice the Snow Yams/Roots now. (crystal fruit always could be Jammed/Wined)
You can even Pickle Edible Mushrooms as well. Purple Mushrooms and Chanterelle go pretty hard in Jars.
Yep, as do Magma Caps.
To be fair, eating jelly or pickles seems fairly tame compared to just going to town on a jar of mayo and nothing else
@@danielthompson392I think eating mayo in front of NPCs should either give you the rummaging through trash reaction or at least a drop of sweat emote. It's... unnerving
The carrots are great when you're just starting a new game -- they give a lot of energy before you start building up your stats
They’re just the GOAT there. I’m probably going to ship all the gold chubs I’ve been storing for energy because I got a bunch of carrots.
And when late game, you feed them to horse and now speed!

Carrots are too much work
You literally dig them up for free and eat the gold ones for +113 energy I ain’t changing shit carrots ARE meta
I was shocked when I first found out how much carrots healed. It makes the Field snack almost completely useless.
They should really add a re-balancee energy economy mode where all consumables besides energy tonic heal half the energy, but the bathhouse is also 3 times faster. (I also wish instead of a weird giant building it was just a natural hotspring)
I mean, carrots sell for more, so you might want to eat field snacks first and only use carrots if needed

@@darknesswave100 Call me crazy, but I prefer hand-watering to Sprinklers. I only use Sprinklers on Ginger Island.
I honestly think of all the new crops powder melon is the best because tis easy to find yourself bored in winter so they give you something to farm
@@danielthompson392every crop needs watering
Just as a correction, with the 1.6 update now winter forageables can be put in preserve jars and kegs! I recommend using crystal fruit as it gives a nice profit
You could already do that with Crystal Fruit since it's, well, considered a fruit. Being able to do it with the Snow Yam and Winter Root is new, though, yeah.
It's also really easy to harvest pine cones so you can get more powdermelon seeds from the raccoons, so there's another advantage over winter forage seeds.
I found it strange how carrots have no cooking recipes.
Cave carrots definitely took that spot from them, and it looks like they didn't want to swap the recipes off
@@salmence100 I wish we could sub them for it, at least, sort of like how duck and ostrich eggs can count as regular eggs for recipes. (Even if that is obviously a hideously bad use for them)
You make 22,798,440 gold per year planting carrots playing on the standard farm planting on it and ginger island every day and turning them into pickles.
I feel like the new crops will be hugely useful for doing different challenges
The biggest benefit of the Powder Melons is absolutely the farming experience, I already find foraging the easiest skill to level up, I nearly always have a higher foraging level compared to farming level.
How?!? Foraging is decent early early game, but is barely ever worth doing past Spring. Farming is both consistent and incredibly profitable.
One small correction near the end: If you've progressed far enough in the giant stump quest, you can trade with Mrs. Raccoon for the new seasonal seeds!
EDIT: He mentioned it at 0:35 and I somehow missed it!
That's the Raccoon Shop that was mentioned early on in the video.

I really like the new crops, carrot and squash are great for early game energy. I really could care less about the money these crops could make, personally I like how they just complete the game, if that makes sense. Not everything needs to have "value" or tie in with the game entirely to be able to be good
3:15
It's actually a full week before the next season
So it starts at day 21 of any season
Carrots don`t take a week to grow
Except for summer squash seeds that you only get starting from spring 24
@@Demonicrow Grow time has nothing to do with it. The video is wrong about that. You will get next season's seeds 1 week before the start of the next season, regardless of grow time.
@@No-Me3 Ah, gotcha
Not to mention, it take one spot in your inventory instead of 2!
(In my case I had a couple hundred powdermelon seeds, because I was compulsively planting and re-harvesting pine cones as a tree-farm in the desert, so that I'd have a good amount of wood to get myself started.)
carrots make me really happy honestly cause i like the feeling of seeing a crop is done and i end up with a ton of seeds for them anyway
genuinely love how fast they grow
they also help because i can’t always get enough seeds to fill spots that’ll grow in the time i have left
you can also get the seeds in the normal mines (not sure about skull cavern i havent gotten that far in my 1.6 file, but ive planted so much summer squash from grinding out the normal mine floors)
I just started playing today, and carrots have been really helpful for me going into the mines because they give a lot of health and energy compared to other things
i love any new items !! and honestly if you get loads of these, theyre pretty great !! the next season seeds thing is also really handy :D
my only niggle is the integration in recipes but there'll already be mods for that by now !!
I love Salmence because he shuts down crop haters in such a rational and kind way. 😂
While I hadn't done the profit math on carrots, I was immediately struck by how much energy they gave. This let me chop down nearly every tree in town in the first few days of my new playthrough lol
*Points to comment*
Look mum, I'm on TV!
Great video as always! I do still stand by what I said - the role of 'free seeds you can find out and about' was already filled by mixed seeds, so the wild crops are kinda pointless in that regard, but it's nice to see the niches that they can provide as 'more reliable' freebies.
For fun, here's the calcs for base profit/day of mixed seeds:
Spring: (175/12 (cauliflower) + 1.25 x 80/6 (potato, accounting for extra potatoes) + 2 x 35/4 (parsnip, which is twice as likely))/4 = 12.19g/day
Summer: (11 x 50/54 (corn grown on 1st Summer) + 8 x 40/26 (hot pepper grown on 1st) + 90/6 (radish) + 25/4 (wheat))/4 = 10.93g/day
Fall: (160/8 (artichoke) + 4 x 50/26 (corn grown on 1st Fall) + 5 x 60/25 (eggplant grown on 1st) + 320/13 (pumpkin))/4 = 16.08g/day
Bonus Ginger Island! (note that regrow crops don't die): (3 x 50/4 (blueberries) + 250/12 (melon) + 300/7 (pineapple) + 220/13 (rhubarb))/4 = 29.53g/day
I could try and spin it as 'oh the spring and fall ones are actually more profitable than the wild crops' but let's be honest: just plant any freebies you get, at least in Y1, wild or mixed. They're FREE. (Later years you may want to hold onto mixed seeds for Fiber Seeds).
"all npcs like vegetables, other than the kids - and the romancables who act like kids"
Okay so Hayley and Alex?
I routinely get 10-20 of the seasona seed whenever i did a mine run. It's nice not having to buy seeds
I love the new seeds. Not everything needs to be a game-breaking min-max exploit, but, like you said, carrots legitimately rule.
I primarily use the new crops for energie in the mines. Especially in early gameplay these are a game changer in how much energy they give you and they are free.
EDIT: Ignore my comment, I forgot how speed-gro behaves
I've got a counter-point about those carrots and the issue is the Deluxe speed-gro.
That’s true for the first like two days , but then it’ll pay it’s self back, and if you replant right as you harvest the speed grow won’t go away
Before watching the video
I really liked the new crops in my newest playthrough, the carrots especially were a reaaaally good food source in the early game
I grew lots of broccoli as it is a repeat harvestable crop with good energy levels. So it is my main food source now in the greenhouse.
Although ig if there's another update Concernedape will probably add recipes for them
I love that raccoon family, but my gosh.. what moochers. Just hangin’ out in their tree whilst I’m slaving away for their adorable selves
"might not fill up all of your crop space"
Brotherman, that's several hundred spaces. They ain't getting filled
i still want to ride a Ostrich like the Horse
I love finding carrots in spring, at the start of the game.
i do actually appreciate there being a winter seed besides forage able crops, both because they're prettier, and also because I don't need multiple powder melons to make a single seed pack.
I've already been using carrots to aid in the qi crop challenge, and the short turn around, plus not being necessarily a valuable crop means I don't mind harvesting after several days of them being ready, but also I can harvest next days if i have enough beans.
Y'know, I don't think I've ever had squash in real life.
Im on console, so i can't even play 1.6😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Its tragic
Hopefully it'll be soon enough. He said it would be as soon as possible
I like Carrots for easy energy, and its nice to have something to plant in winter but i never felt a need for the other 2
given that half the crops in spring have 4, 6 or 12 day growth cycles, and you're likely to have a bunch of empty patches come day 25, carrots are a great way to fill out all that extra space and give you something to do for those last 3 days.
I can eat one season of summer squash for months just off of the seeds I find in dig spots and i love it
I actually noticed how nuts the carrots energy was when I came back I was like no way does eating 2 of these give me all my energy.
I’ve been treating them similarly to how I treat mixed seeds. If I have empty crop space, then they’re an easy answer. Even better the spots don’t give the seeds if there aren’t enough days to grow them.
I think the reason to make giant powdermelons is so you can get more powdermelon seeds.
I absolutely LOVE the powdermelons! Turn them into wine and age them to irinium grade and be prepared to swim in gold.
I think thats great
Edit: Also Powdermelon made me actually want to plant Winter Seeds, which i used to not do. Having both to help out with farming and Foraging EXP while making some money is pretty awesome, and im glad i now do that
I just wish we got recipes with the new crops. Carrots and broccoli especially - those are so versatile in cooking!
Also, carrots are OP.
My takeaway from this is that the raccoon family is much more beneficial than I thought.
Especially in the first year with carrots 😀 I absolutely adore the texture for the powder melon, it looks so magical 😂
On another note, ive always been confused if i should always sell my havests that has stars or not, have you made a video about something like that or can make a video about it? Maybe also a video about when to sell stuff and whats a good idea to hoard? 🙏
You can put forages in preserves jars now!
Any forage can be put inside a keg or a jar since the 1.6 update
Except flowers, of course
I agree that a lot of the new seeds are very under rated. Good thing we have Sal to teach everyone!
I’m not 100% sure this is a new feature or not, but some forage can be used in Kegs and Preserves Jars. This would cut into the amount of seeds you could replant, but we’re also trying to profit off of these
Edit: You can also place the forage required for Wild Seeds into a seed maker to obtain them easier
Powdermelon is awesome when it's dried. The health and energy recovery stats are amazing!
You get more energy from eating 5 powdermelons though
Carrots rlly are a life saver during my new run. I'm in year one and my energy is often quickly depleted so having these extra crops help a lot with that + fill in empty plot spaces!
I think carrots are also super helpful for getting your farming skill up in early game. They give you the same amount of XP per harvest as parsnips (8), but in half of the time. As someone who sets it and forgets it in terms of their cropfield at the start of a season, I can now easily break farming level 4 in the first spring.
We love the new crops and making some early game money. 💴 Feeding the carrot to our horse is just too cute. 🥕
I think the new crops are more to add variation but more to provide the player with energy as they grow quick especially the carrots.
Don’t forget you can buy all the seeds from the racoon shop
Carrots are a god send one the first year, if you get a few definitely plant them for that sweet sweet energy.
I love them for energy, and added crop variety, which I think is the main thing.
i feel like the issue is how you find them. to me, they should be a bit rarer, BUT once you find them, you could get a sidequest to show them to either pierre/joja or demetrius and get the ability to buy them from then on.
Idk who these people are but I was HYPED for new crops. I'm still hyped 😂
I really like Powder Melons. Gives me something to grow in winter and they just look really pretty.
On the plus side, because they are not used in any recipe, they don't make the 'gourmet chef' achievement any more difficult
Not everything needs to be great, sometimes it's just cool to have a new option, all the better if the option is genuinely good or in some way unique, but it doesn't always need to be
My main excitement is just that my favorite vegetable (broccoli) exists without a mod now. Same with carrots. Now... if only they had recipes...
Pickled Carrots are a top teir healing item early game recently I’ve been using them in the mines and even skull caverns. I did make sure to get the seed maker by the second year though, which honestly isn’t that hard.
Carrots are definitely meta.
Ive been using powdermelons to dye my clothes! They're strong in dye strength but other than that that's about all I use them for 😅
Carrots are amazing, they grow so fast which is great when you need money early in the early game
Pickled broccoli was my reliable energy source in the mines during winter.
