Michael is back at the restoration table with a Star Trek phaser toy from Playmates that's never been unsealed from the box! So, why does it need a restoration, you ask? Well.... Let's find out together! - Комедії
Great job! Undiscovered Country was the only original cast Trek film I saw at the cinema. "If there is to be a brave new world [of phaser restoration], [anti-box openers are] going to have the hardest time living in it."
Undiscovered Country was my first original cast movie I saw in theatres ,grew up on the rest via my dads VHS trek collection.
Miss the restoration videos. I know they don't get an overwhelming amount of views but they really capture the RetroBlasting feelings them made me a fan. Thank for putting the time in.
I love the, “Michael will be with you shortly,” waiting chairs in the background. 😉
Toy Restorations Have Always Been an Important Part Of RetroBlasting as A Whole, I’m So Glad They’re Still Coming In Strong
Very glad this was stored correctly and you didn't have to perform a full teardown🖖. Very cool that you have all the major designs of the Type II phasers (and Type I for the Diamond Select & Wand flavors, of course) from Trek Classic. The secondary market prices for that The Wand Company phaser have gotten absurd.
Nice restoration! I grew up on the Playmates line and this is one of the cosplay items I never managed to get. I always believed the Phaser designs changed so much, despite being largely functionally the same because somewhere in Starfleet someone was getting rediculous kickbacks to keep posting contracts for replacements.
I have a number of original AT-AT play vehicles I bought in the early '90s and only one of them back then had working sound and gun functions. They've been in storage for a long time. Maybe someday I'll get them out and with thanks to Michael, I'll be more willing to experiment with getting to know their inner workings and seeing what I could do.
Adding the battery is what gave me a good discount back when I bought mine from a comic shop in 2002. Because as it turned out, the batteries were just low, it was fine otherwise. Clerk was sure it didn't work anymore, so I got it for 5 bucks. Still got it!
Had I known you were looking for one, could've sent it to ya.
I still kept the box and after I played with it a few times, as a kid, I put it back in the box with the batteries removed. Smaller than what I thought it should be on the screen, but it was a Star Trek V/VI phaser!
That’s very useful information. I’ve got a sealed Playmates Exosquad that will get checked out because of this.
2 👍👍 for the Hobbs
Probably my favorite movie design of a phaser. Very sleek looking
Ive had to change out the light bulbs on a few playmates phasers before. The "assault" phaser is one of my favourites. Thanks for the video Michael.
I remember seeing those Phasers at TRU for $8 a piece. The power pack on mine wouldn't hold and kept slipping out and I kept thinking-just buy another and never did! Also if you read Cinefantastique` magazine in the early `90's they showed some behind the scenes diagrams and that phaser had the nick-name The "Macho" Phaser which is also a cool name for it.
VERY COOL! I love how close this toy is to resin replica. You just don't see that anymore!
Great review Michael. I remember getting this type of phaser from Beatties toy shop in Brighton during their closing down sale in the late 90's. Top toy.
Well here's hoping that sometime in the future someone finds a warehouse or storage unit full of these toys.
Looking forward to more restoration videos in the future, always enjoyed the helpful info and seeing how things work
The restoration videos are always some of my favorites :) seeing old and sometimes abused toys be brought back to life is satisfying.
I agree I LOVE these too!! I have a 3.5ft Voltron in the darkness of the closet that's sealed in the box and has light up eyes. I always worry about that as possible damage.
Looks great! Nice one!
I’m so glad you got lucky on this one. Too many times I’ve come across rusted battery compartments and busted batteries. Thanks for sharing your terminal cleaning tips
Fascinating... (In my best Spock voice.) 🖖
In a bit of kismet, just today I found a '83 BD TIE Fighter in a bin of vintage SW toys at a comic show. The battery cover was missing, but otherwise complete. There was no corrosion on the battery contacts, they were bright. So I picked it up for $25 (a steal imho). Got it home and popped batteries in and as expected, light but no sound. Quick and easy restoration to just open it up carefully and exercise the motor until it ran on its own. I think we both got a win! I like easy restorations! Now just to track down a battery cover and its one more piece in my vintage collection collected.👌
Really wish I knew about batteries bursting when I was younger, my Wing 0 Gundam had a led light in its chest, years later checking it, the connectors were messed up by the acid. Also, I had batteries in a drawer and ended up messing up my Old Timer knife.
But now I know, and knowing is half the battle.
"Still got to figure out what this is all about."
*Slides the top portion forward*
The Assault Phaser was designed to house a much smaller Type-1 phaser within that compartment that slides open and close. While the prop featured the sliding motion, the Type-1 phaser was scrapped from the final prop. In the scene from Star Trek V where Kirk and his landing team are gearing up in the shuttle, a crew member on the left can be seen sliding the top portion back and forth like he would a regular pistol.
Factory Entertainment is currently working on making a replica of the phaser that will not only feature a fully functioning removable Type-1 Phaser, but they're also going to have the slide portion retract with the touch of one of the levers to more accurately reflect a real pistol (The Master Replicas had the lever pop the slider open).
Your content literally makes life better. Thank you always for what you do, Michael.
What a cool toy. Great to see that there was little to no corrosion.
His phaser is full collector's value because it has the original box including everything, twist ties and all. Now I have to go check out my own phaser
A childhood friend was a massive fan of Star Trek and he managed to get ahold of one of the screen used prop phasers from Star Trek V, just a painted resin casting. Sadly he passed and his collection is missing.
Silly question but would something like OxyClean , water, and a soft bristled brush help in cleaning the terror drome ?
Good to see you again, mate. Hope you and yours are well.
That was pretty lucky with battery terminals. So awesome it actually works.
Great video!
Great Video, I enjoyed this very much!
Wow! I feared it would be swollen from the two batteries that had leaked like a sieve inside of the phaser. I'm glad it wasn't a horror show. Quick go purchase a lottery ticket!😂
As for the plastic yellowing on the Terror Drome . I solved a similar issue with my Robotech Valkyrie that was yellowed. I used a mixture of water, pinesol and bleach and let the parts sit in the mixture for a couple of hours. Checking on it as I feared the chest and wings might dissolve. Amazingly it worked.
I'm not sure what the ratio was as I did not measure. Also, I let it soak outside as the smell was awful.
Best of luck on getting the yellowing out it.
🍀nice pickup‼️
Just awesome mate
All I can say is that I'm happy for you. :) Live long and prosper!
This was my favorite phaser toy as a kid. Had two of them and dual wield them like a space cowboy 😂
If I was a redshirt in Star Trek, caught in a fight, this would be my approach too!
I adore your restoration videos! I'll never use most but I do love seeing something repaired to nearly new and in some cases, better than new. Great editing again! Keep being you RetroBlasting!
great fine has trek fan my self you got love the great fines that really cheap
Cheers on your lucky break. :)
I'm amazed, I couldn't see any damage to the packaging from corrosion
that pooled at the bottom of the power cell magazine.🤔
That’s my third favorite phaser. The first being TNG, DS9,VOY. The second is what I refer to as the “Mr. Adventure special.”
Nice to see you dodge Murphy’s Law this time!
Awhile back I bought a Toybiz blue and white Cyclops figure loose and I purposefully chose the (Talking heroes) version because I didnt want to deal with the battery corrosion issue ,also I didnt want to crack the fig in half. Toybiz for some reason didnt put a battery access panel on the back . Thankfully This was latter corrected for the 90's animated Cyclops .
In all fairness Micheal and I love you and Melinda since you has 4000 subscribers but this video should be titled “cleaning battery connectors on a toy” not a “restoration” 😂 but it’s all good, you didn’t know until you got it open if it was going to a restoration or not. Regardless hopefully your next one has more problems to fix!!
I literally put a question mark on the thumbnail and explained myself at the end. Your coaching is unnecessary and unwelcome.
Also, your use of "In all fairness," puts you in the doghouse with me through the end of August.
@@retroblasting August is fair haha…..I hope you and Melinda are doing well. Keep up the awesome videos, you guys blossomed into something special for the toy community!
You just gave me an idea to fix my old Xbox controller. It was the C3PO cordless and the batteries recently corroded, thanks man!
Be very careful. Don't let the vinegar flow INTO the controller. ONLY on the compartment contacts!
@@retroblasting thanks for the tip . Thankfully it has a deatachable battery compartment so it shouldn't be too much trouble.
This video has reminded me of the mortality of some of the MIB battery equipped toys I have downstairs… hopefully I have the same luck if I ever get the nerve to open any of them!
I wouldn't wait...
Love these restoration videos, hell I love all the videos all of you at Retroblasting put out thanks for the great content
You have so much patience to do this. I would never be able to do something like that.
14:40 I believe that’s where the Assault’s Type-1 would normally be located
You restoring toys is how I found your UA-cam channel years ago
Star Trek. Starfleet. Assault phaser toy restoration
UA-cam Bot, you're the real MVP of repetitive comments. Keep up the copy-paste skills!
I have this same phaser, the electronics work fine, no corrosion, problem is, the little plastic tab that holds the "clip" in place is loose, so the batteries fall out when it's picked up.
Always good to see you at work, however lengthy the project! By the way, if you don't mind my asking, where did you find the Terror Drome?
Nice! I have a sealed Playmates Bird of Prey from that movie and both demo buttons still work today. I wonder if I should remove it and take out the batteries?
Ummmm.... if you have double A batteries that still work from 1994, you need to call the Guinness Book or something.
Awesome score! Awesome video!!
Always great to see an aged item that still works as well as it did the day it made it to shelves!
Ezy fix r the best to get a toy functioning again A+
Tyvm for this video because I actually forgot to check my Star Trek stuff and actually found a couple of coronation spots that need fixed. So again thanks for reminding me.
I love watching your videos sir. I don’t like Star Trek never have, but as a 50 year old man it pulled on all the nostalgia strings from my childhood. Found your channel about 7 months ago and have been going on a deep dive into your videos! What an amazing talent you are sir and much respect! Cheers. Also love when your on 3POA.
This was awesome!
i had a mild success with leaving my playmates enterprise just in direct sunlight and heat sitting on my cars dashboard for 48 hrs , then wiped it down and some yellowing came off like it was some kind of spill , maybe thats something you can try on the terror drome if you haven't already
Did you neutralize the vinegar so it doesn’t continue to eat the metal?
@Retroblasting Do you have a Captain Pike laser pistol from (The Cage) ?
No, I do not. I don't consider that original crew.
I love it when a plan comes together. Lucky pick up. Nice when stuff goes your way.
👍👍!
Awseome! Glad the gamble paid off; I was completely expecting a nightmare when we finally got to see inside, especially the battery pack piece itself. Thanks for sharing the moment kf suspense.
Is that a Hobbes in the back room? Awesome!
Always have Hobbes around. Always.
@@retroblastingI have that exact Hobbes, and he is currently protecting my CD collection.
BROKEN VADER: If Michael was able to restore this uncivilised weapon, why can't he do the same to me?
ME: Your warranty is in process, milord...probably.
Whats one of those going for?
Restoration is one of my hobbies. Have seen some gruesome battery damage to old toys. And just before you made your comment about the speaker holes, I was like, "Oh, there was a parent on the design team." Awesome vid!
How about a restoration of an Imperial Shuttle?
First RetroBlasting video I ever watched was a restoration video (Melindas My Little Pony restoration videos). Always nice to see them.
Great pick up, Michael!
You did good, kid.
I just got this a couple of months ago. I watched all the movies with my 9 year old and then happened to see this unopened at an antique store. He carried it around for days and it was great....(no battery problems) then the sound went out. Still lights up, but so disappointed. Don't know how to fix it.
Do Eneloop AA and AAA rechargeable batteries have less of a chance of corroding down the road compared to alkaline? May be an option to look into. At least for the rare and/or valuable pieces.
Better to leave the batteries out when storing
Awesome video as usual man. Nice luck of the draw on the battery corrosion. i cant wait to see collection tour part 2.
Part 2 of the Studio Tour should be happening soon. Finishing up the Freeze Chamber construction in the main toy room. Once that's done and cleared, Studio Tour Part 2 will land.
@@retroblasting man it’s gonna look sweet
Can you still buy the matching brand batteries today?
I think you're being a bit OCD
@@retroblasting lol
What a what?! They made that?!
Fascinating 🖖
I purchased a Borg cube mint in box about a year ago, I immediately opened it up and had to take care of the batteries.
As much as I love that iconic, great artwork of 90s Playmates Star Trek, I opened it up and checked on it. It’s better to have a loose item in great condition then a ruined one in a box.
Ahhhh. I missed these. 🥰
So you're telling me there's a chance? Glad you got lucky with that phaser, really nice Trek collectible!
Haha! Its like opening the Well of souls...and there's only one little snake!!! Great Video! Thanks!!
Where was the restoration?
I explained it at the end if you hadn't scrubbed through the video since it hasn't been posted long enough for you to have seen my final comments..... Clod....
Why would the manufacturer put batteries in the item were that would happen, they would let buyers, the person getting something with batteries would have to buy their own batteries.
Look forward to more restorations...
Basically you lucked out
After 27 years you didn’t know what was going on inside this phaser, so you gambled….
It looks in great shape
Nice addition to your collection!
You are lucky. We are both lucky. I bought a mint Playmates Captain Pike Laser Pistol a while back (because I'm so obsessed with _The Cage_ ) that had zero corrosion.
Yeah, you dodged a bullet there.
Heel release means it's a European model, likely ex-Police.
The prop was built out of a Beretta 93, probably an airsoft.
@@jonacheson I did not know that, I was being silly.
I love a happy ending!
Collectors: OMG!!! YOU TOOK IT OUT OF THE PACKAGE! NOW ITS NO LONGER A COLLECTABLE!
Me: Wanna play?
Aww. I remember ordering a Star Trek TOS paper model book from Weekly Reader. It had the phaser, communicator, tricorder and medical scanner. I think it ships too, I vaguely recall a Bird of Prey. And it had a goofy set of Spock Ears.
I love the communicator and tricorder. I think I played with them till they fell apart.
The phasers from the later films seemed to begin resembling xenomorph heads. You certainly lucked out with the batteries. Here in the southwest they would have exploded by year three, heh.
Playmates really was a great place for Star Trek; the figures were good and varied with some characters that only made one appearance. And then on the role playing front they gave fans a lot of options; I own the TNG phaser and love it and I’m always on the hunt for the TNG tricorder and Wrath of Khan phaser from Playmates
I might also suggest car battery corrosion cleaners that you can get at auto parts stores for really bad corrosions. They spray out in a foam so you kind of have to spray it on a toothbrush or spray some into a cup and dip cotton swabs into it to not make a mess, but it works really well. Lucky they didn't use Duracell batteries in these. I dunno what it is, but after having bought tons of used electronics at thrift stores over the past 12+ years coppertops are the WORST about blowing and leaking everywhere.
Here lately if a toy or electronic uses the standard "bump & spring" battery contacts I have just started replacing them if they are really badly corroded. It requires disassembly and some very basic soldering (usually just 2 wires), but it often is less time consuming overall than soaking / cleaning contacts if they are really bad. I can get a fresh supply of battery contacts all day long out of toys at local thrift shops. Just gotta take a screwdriver in with you so you can check them before buying them. I often get toys for .59 to .99 cents that have 4 or more contacts in them. Got a pretty good stockpile built up now. It's also handy for toys where speakers have gone bad as many times they are fairly easily replaced as well!
DeoxIT electronic contact cleaner does a really good job as well. Also, Duracell Pro batteries are the worst, I think every single one I bought exploded inside something valuable.
Well to be honest Playmates wasn’t making these for collectors they made them for kids to be ripped out of the box and played with now don’t get me wrong I’m not trashing collectors I am one I’m just saying in the 80’s and 90’s companies did not cater to collectors
This literally had a collectors edition number on it.... that I read OUT LOUD IN THIS VIDEO.
@@retroblasting Yes you are right I wasn’t trying to offend I love seeing 80’s and 90’s toys that I played with or collected or both but sorry I really wasn’t trying to offend
Promoting assault weapons and "whitening" toys?
*ReeeeeeeetroBlasting!*
If memory serves, someone is shown cocking their assault phaser in Star Trek V, so that's likely why the toy version does that as well. I can't bring myself to actually watch Star Trek V to make sure I'm remembering correctly, though.
you can cock the top back like a gun
But the back isn't what moves. It's the front.
It's probably impractical for such a large piece, but the 8bit guy had some kind of retrobright technique involving a vacuum environment and ozone.
:) glad I could share something of value.
I'm sure a lot of the same advice gets share over and over.
Ha! I own one of these Star Trek 6 phasers mint new in the box. But I was never fond of this design. My favorite Star Trek phaser is TOS and Wrath of Khan phaser. I want to own copies of the phasers from Star Trek Discovery and Star Trek Strange New Worlds. But the U.S. federal government thinks that Star Trek phasers resemble real pistols and thus prohibited toy manufacturing of these phasers. All praise to our all-powerful, unelected government bureaucrats.
