About the race/ethnic thing, I have to say I went to KC comic con as Batman and I’m dark skinned but I got nothing but compliments it was my first time doing cosplay so I was happy about that. I always was confused by the race/ethnic thing because the majority of the anime characters that people cosplay as are probably supposed to be Asian. So no one gets upset when the white/caucasian person dresses up as an Asian character but they should also only stick to characters that are their same race/ethnicity? And the same goes for Asian cosplayers dressing up as non-Asian characters.

I am so happy to finally hear this episode. I have been following you both forever (Sarah since vine) and listened to the pod since day one. It’s my every Monday ritual. I have been cosplaying since 2011 and I thought y’all were really respectful about everything. I just wanted to answer some of the questions you had!
About weapons, generally people have prop weapons, which can be plastic, 3D printed, made from expanding foam, etc. A lot of weapons are really cartoony so they are obviously fake but if your prop weapon looks very realistic you get it checked in and marked as a prop at a prop check.
On different genre/subsections of cosplay in competition it mostly just depends. A lot of cons are advertised like an anime convention, a sci fi convention, a horror convention, etc. While you’ll always see cosplays from every genre at cons generally you’ll see the most of whatever that convention is advertised as, mostly (at least personally) because of shopping and programming people go to cons specifically marketed to their interest so the things being sold, panels, and cosplayers will be more akin to their special interest. I’m an anime and video game girly so I wouldn’t go to Comic-Con for instance, not because none of that would be there but because I’m uninterested in comics and their programming will be less like what I’m looking for. However a lot of cosplayers have intersecting interests.
Regular hotel guests at the convention center omg well this varies depending on the convention. I’d say at most cons regular hotel guests are pretty amazed and they’ll ask you questions and stuff, they’re generally pretty respectful especially if they have children because their kids may recognize characters (for instance back in 2011-2013 I cosplayed a lot of Adventure Time characters or now Steven Universe characters are super popular and kids love that), there are some cons such as Colossalcon that the hotels literally send out an email to any guest that try to book a reservation not through the convention that a cosplay convention is going on. This particular convention takes place at a water park and has a huge party atmosphere
so kids trying to be at the water park not involved in the actual con would be completely exposed to a giant drunken nerd party with a lot of half naked people. I go to a convention every year that’s always sharing half the space with another con and weirdly enough it’s usually a cheerleading convention but this year it was a Christian convention, mostly cosplayers find it funny but stay out of those peoples way and they mostly do the same.
Cosplaying another race or generally any character that doesn’t have your same attributes I’d say 99% of cosplayers agree that as long as you don’t change your skin color, tape your eyes, and wear things of cultural significance with respect (for instance don’t wear your Kimono incorrectly or some more military style characters may have nazi adjacent symbolism on them and it’s custom to remove that in America at least. As well as not using fake mobility aids just because your character is disabled.) Rule of thumb is these type of things are not costumes to the people who experience it in their day to day life, they don’t get to go home and remove their race, disability, size, etc. so you don’t treat it as a costume. Fatphobia and Racism particularly are really bad on the internet but honestly I think that’s due to the popularization of cosplay and it’s mostly people who do not cosplay and know nothing about the hobby making these comments. The majority of cosplayers understand that it is a fun hobby and not about perfectly portraying a character and tbh I’ve cosplayed at 115lbs and 260lbs and no one has ever made comments about it in person. It’s always people online, mostly men honestly, who are angry that you’re not perfectly portraying a character they are sexually attracted to and this has been perpetuated as well by the rise in OF cosplayers. I wanna make it clear that’s not OF cosplayer’s faults and so long as they’re not making heinous content involving children, inc*st, and other maybe not great things to sexualize..they work hard and they should get that bag, but for whatever reason now a lot of people who are not even involved in the community think that you have to be unbelievably disproportionate, look like a model, be exactly accurate and have an OF to be a cosplayer and trust me they’re not afraid to ask if you have links they can see 🙄
My last quick points are that most people outside of Tik Tok videos or back in the day tumblr ask blogs do not act in character at con’s and it is convention etiquette not to treat someone as their character (like if you hate their character you do not approach them on 100 like they murdered your fave or something and if they’re a character your character is shipped with you don’t just approach people like they’re your partner)
There are however a lot of in character jack sparrows at conventions so don’t fret, you’d at least see one.
People do cosplay totally spies as well!
The cosplays you viewed in order are Osaka Dazai from Bungo Stray Dogs and Midari Ikishima from Kakegurui
Lastly, I’m begging Brittany to become an anime girly, she’d be sooo good at cosplaying.
I doubt you guys will see this but If y’all wanna see my work or ask any questions if you ever do a part 2 my Tik Tok and Insta are @ strawbewbie (I also know a lot of people who are interested in other subsections of cosplay, are considered “cosplay famous”, are OF cosplayers, and are cosplayers in marginalized bodies (POC, plus size, disabled, trans, etc. If you’re looking for other perspectives)
    Thanks! I hope this helped!

I'm not that far in the podcast, but I think you can, unless she is asking if you can cosplay as a person who is still alive, I don't see why not.
People dress up as people like Abraham Lincoln or Napoleon for instance, and people have also cosplayed as people like Trump, so I suppose the answer is yes, but also, it is a bit different than dressing up as a fictional character, I suppose, since part of cosplay (and, indeed, the challenge of it) is seeing your favorite characters in real life.
There's a difference between cosplaying as Abraham Lincoln and cosplaying as someone like Sylvanas from Warcraft, for instance.
      Good question!

People do cosplay characters portrayed by real people like jack sparrow, doctors from doctor who, the guys from supernatural, etc. As well as there are people who cosplay from musicals or cult classic movies like Hamilton, The Heathers, Rocky Horror, etc. and they are trying to look like the people who play those character in some sense. I have rarely seen people cosplay real people not portraying characters in the decade I’ve been attending cons but sometimes people may especially for joke cosplays. FYI on the props thing, most people make their weapons/swords out of EVA foam, those are perfectly fine. Basically you can't bring live steel or real guns etc. Some busier cons like Anime Expo do have size limits on props tho since it's so crowded. Also it's pretty rare for normal ppl to be in a convention hotel cuz usually the con is planned like a year in advance, so people take up all the hotel rooms. At least in the hotel attached to the convention, surrounding hotels are definitely subject to some weird interactions tho haha

for the race thing: I think they should’ve explained a little better. The argument of “you shouldn’t cosplay outside of your race” has been used as harassment against black, brown, and darker-skinned people for a very long time as a reason they shouldn’t be allowed to cosplay “white” characters. (I put white in quotations because a lot of online discourse around “white” characters comes from anime and Japanese video game studios, and a lot of those characters aren’t meant to be white, either, but no one gives white people flack for cosplaying them like they do black, brown, and dark-skinned people!!)
And, obviously, I do NOT support cosplayers doing black/brown/yellow face!! Those people should very much be called out, but POC cosplayers cosplaying a character “outside” their race shouldn’t. If you have to take a moment and think, “would it be harmful for me to cosplay this character?” MAYBE DON’T!

cosplayer here! cosplays are not always inherently DIY, but based on competitions, it is usually in the rules that you have to make the cosplay yourself. usually it's agreed that cosplay should be limited to fictional characters, and cosplaying real people is kind of looked down upon, but its kind of a weird gray area. also! closet cosplaying is dressing up as a character using only items from your closet, or clothes you already owned :) love yall so much

Since I commented on the trailer, thought I should comment on the long version
I think the confusion I got was when they talked about white ppl getting flack for cosplaying non white characters (without being racist with black face or other applying other skin colours as part of the costume). When the majority of the time it is the people of colour who are cosplayers who get hated for daring to cosplay non black or non brown characters. Sorry for the long sentence . I have yet to see hate a white person dressed as sailor moon get hated as much as a black person dressed as the same character.
So I know when they said that the cosplayers should not cosplay characters out of their race , I hope they didn’t mean that only Japanese people can cosplay anime characters . I think there’s a fine line between anyone cosplaying whoever and thinking any form of cosplay is appropriate .
This is not a hate comment, just maybe a slight addition to the discussion to what we permit cosplayers to do.
TLDR: cosplaying shouldn’t be gatekept based on skin , body type , and other physical attributes you can’t change.

heres a tid bit about weapons at cons: you can have swords and knives as long as they are made of a safe material, but there's a booth where you have to get them "peace bonded" where they tie a little coloured ribbon or tape onto your weapon to show that it's approved to carry around! they also dont usually have to be "attached" to the costume, you can carry a sword in your hands just be very careful and mindful of other people especially in the crowded artist alley and exhibition halls!

IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS EPISODE
On a side note, I just wanted to add on the commentary regarding the racism within the community near the end on the episode. It was mentioned how some people believe that one shouldn’t cosplay a character of a different ethnical or racial background. I feel that a large part of that is mostly directed to (of course) the black community, as you will see a lot someone innocently playing a character who happens to be lighter skinned or white. I (personally) feel it should be perfectly fine for others to play characters of different races, but especially for the black community (most especially in anime cosplay) as there aren’t many black characters in comparison to say white characters. In turn, it would be difficult for black cosplayers as this would mean they have limited amount of characters to cosplay. This doesn’t mean I support painting your skin to fit that race or ethnicity, just rather cosplaying as one normally would. (you can also see that this is a very prominent issue in the cosplay community as black cosplayers will frequently get an insane amount of hate for cosplaying a non-black character. The hate often goes as far as calling people racial slurs and other far worse things.)
If this doesn’t make that much sense, Veridis Joe in his video “Cosplaying While Black”, he explains it wonderfully and in a way thats easy to understand.
Again, loved the episode y’all, I listen to this podcast ALL THE TIME, listened to every episode, can’t wait for the next :D

I’m glad you asked about the weapons because that’s something I only learned recently having gotten into cosplay and going to conventions. they actually have pretty struck rules of what is and isn’t allowed inside conventions. “weapons” made entirely out of wood are usually not allowed, if they feel that something is too hard/heavy they might not let it in the venue. I made a scythe and some witch staff things from scratch and I was so paranoid they wouldn’t let me into the venue with them!! at security they will examine the weapon and tag it with a zip tie or something so that visually people can see it’s fake/it has been approved
