freakingKiller, dude, I'm one of the biggest Steve Smith fans of all time, yet I still realize that without people like Max Roach, the Steve Smith's would have had nothing to follow.
Do you honestly think that the term 'good' has a universal meaning?!?! The man was revolutionary. He completely changed the role of percussion in music. All that he did may not have been 'good' to all ears, but he changed the way beat is used today... his ifluence is so pervasive its its simply hard to imagine the evolved state of beat today without him.
I love all these new rock/metal drummers you see with their shirts off and stuff, and then you see guys like Roach and Buddy Rich wearing suits and stuff and still out-playing them a lot of the time.
i watch this stuff and, as amazing as it is, and as much as i love it, i also realize that it's not that we drummers can't do it. it's that he DID do it.
Yeah, there's no label that says anything, but they came with the Rockwood drumset by Hohner. They are massivly dented and it's only been a few weeks. I'll think of buying new ones.
I agree. And Max doesn't sweat the bitches..."I'll see ya around" he says, and damned if he does. Max is just that kinda guy. And the bitches recognize it! Long live the for real deal.
he just quadrupled all that i can do on a full set with one piece... good lord i suck and he is fricken amazing. Also there is an argument over who is the goat of drumming.. and while buddy rich is overall favorite... that is too general..y cant we just hav a big category of great drummers
I saw him live in London when he was really old, and he was still amazing. I still get teased about how i raved on and on about his playing afterwards.
@WindyCityJazz i'm not calling anyone stupid, I said "dont BE stupid" I didnt say "you are stupid"... thats 2 different things in my language.. I partly agree to what you're saying but overall music or any other art form IS NOT A COMPETITION !!!! my example about Buddy and Lars is just to let you see that everyone is good at something... maybe you're very good at playing a C Major scale, better then me on a saxophone for sure, I'm probably better playing it on trumpet
You don't tune a hi-hat. (Far as I know) What brand do you use? If it doesn't have one labeled, that might be the problem. If so, go buy the Meinl HCS 14 inch hi hats from Amazon. They are the cheapest that actually sound good. Paiste PST 3's are also pretty good. (That's what I have) Also, make sure you have the felts and everything attached correctly, there are plenty of internet tutorials.
@gvdwmusic and by the way... I dont prefer any style... I'm a professional drummer myself and I have my favorite drummers in any genre... not just 1 but in any genre a top 10 at least... they are people I look up to... like Max Roach... and favorite is something else as best...
@WindyCityJazz its comparing two totally different styles of musicians to eachother that makes no sence... for instance, comparing Buddy Rich with Lars Ulrich... who's better?... well... in rock and metal Ulrich is better, in jazz latin funk Buddy is better.... dont be stupid you know what they mean.
WITHOUT THE RESPECT AND ADMIRATION OF THE SIMPLE BEGINNINGS, THERE CAN BE NO FUTURE... Deal with it...AND I DARE YA TO TRY AND BEAT IT: hint=Forget it! It's impossible ;) In every aspect of existence, from nature to skill, this same basic and fundamental rule applies
I've figured out the secret to his speed. If you look carefully, you'll see that at about the 1:15 mark Roach sprouts a second left arm. I mean, doesn't he?
This guy played for ages with musicians like Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Coleman Hawkins, Bud Powell, Clifford Brown, Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins...No doubt in my mind that the feelings about Max from these geniuses are far more interesting than the comments of some stupid teenagers who don´t even know what MUSIC is. They even dare to compare him with...Blink182 drummer!! Get a life, guys
Max Roach was a bad muhfucka, jack. And he understood how revolutionary Hip-Hop was. "For centuries, Mozart and Charlie Parker and Ellington and Bach and Beethoven stood for the proposition of harmony, melody and rhythm equally balanced. Now here come these rap kids, dealing with a world of sound that makes the palette much broader. There's no melody, no harmony, just this very repetitive rhythmic thing. Rap completely obliterates Western concepts of music. It's revolutionary."
some of you are still in the comparison trap. why compare genius to genius? be glad that there is genius out there and just enjoy/learn. it's very weird that in an artform like music especially people are always trying to fight out the useless battle of who is better. That is totally not the point. for most it is probably a way to counteract perceived intimidation. Music can such strong effect that somehow one can be offended by it intimidated by it.
Hmm... a legendary musician with a career that spanned decades who truly changed the way the instrument is played... vs. anonymous UA-cam tards demeaning him.... I think I know which side I'll go with. I won't take away from any modern players, either - but Max is one of those guys on the mountaintop with Jo Jones, Buddy, Elvin, and Tony... guys who took things to another level... who created the other levels.... R.I.P. Max
hahaha what he does isn't individual, the stuff he does on his Hi-Hat I've been doing for ages, he's older than me, so I can't claim this style or anything nor would I, but there is no way in fucking hell what he is doing is original, I know drummers who about 78 who do all that stuff and have been since they started, so... when you say shit like he's inidividual and original do some research buddies
If THIS is what truly amazing, inspired and highly imagenative hi-hat playing like, then it's very sad. The whole point in doing unusual things with a musical instroment, as is done here, is that they actualy SOUND convinsing, not only look cool. If only people would listen to a solo such as this with no preconceptions, just to get an idea of how musically poor it actualy is (speed isn't everything, for one).
Comes from just watching a Brecker clip where they argue in the comment section about Bracker and Trane being better than one another. Finds a Max Roach vid. Watches Max Shred. Look's at comment Sect. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey guys, sorry everyone for those other comments, my cockhead of a friend went on my account sending comments on random vids and sayin they're shit and all this, really sorry guys, I got loads of e-mails of like reply's from the vid, and I was like wtf?? I'd never even seen it til now, this lad is wikid
yes yes yes its all VERY good. but for its DAY. people like Carter Beauford does all this and much more in a more creative and less gimmicky way today and it sounds just as good, if not better. props to roach for inventing this stuff and all, but really, now its almost mainstream.
honestly its all opinion Max Roach in my opinion isn't the greatest jazz drummer...have to say Buddy Rich has taken that title.. but as far as creativity.....Max R in one of the greatest creative drummers out there he thinks out of the box...using every inch of his drum set....he feels his rhythms
Okay, when you say "you guys", it's obvious that you didn't get it yet. So I'm staying confident that the day will come when you will fully understand what was going on back there. I mean, jazz school gotta be good for something, right?
It is music! I mean music comes in many shapes and forms. Talking drum conversations, motets, raps, ragas - all music. It just sounds like this isn't your kind of music, which is fine. It'd be kinda sad if we all liked exactly the same things.
Then perhaps italytraveller you need your musical ear to be trained. There is a clear beat and he's not playing it right? Oh i'm sorry i didn't realise Max Roach was one of the best jazz drummers ever. You don't even know what you are listening to.
I was just replying to the comment of Groaler. He said Buddy Rich's hi-hat was better. I just wanted to point out that we can't compare 2 artists that have different styles. Both are excellent, there is no inferior or superior quality.
@demonbomb102 what the drummer is wearing makes no difference. they just come from a different time. yes these drummers like max roach are fantastic but theyre not made more impressive coz theyve got a tie on!
When President Carter invited Max Roach to play on the steps of the White House in 1978 Max brought only the hi-hat, with Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, and President Carter as the vocalist for "Salt Peanuts".
You've got a point. Absolutely. My opinion is just that music isn't about showing off, like here on UA-cam. The thing he does would have been great, if it was an improvised solo in a song.
Who says "i dig"? Okay, you are almost there. Now read "newschoolcajon"' comment also like 5-6 times - then you might have the whole picture. When you do, please, get back to me.
do you have eye trouble , buddy could play that shit with one hand tied behind his back, max couldn't hold a candle to papa joe or 'big' sid when it came to hi-hat rhythms
THANK YOU! seriously i didnt mean to offend any of you guys, but seriously try to do this, and you'll find yourself on your camera posting how you can remake a video of this.
The beauty of this is that even non-musical people could recognize the greatness of this! RIP MAX ROACH--ONE SMOOTH CAT!
I like the part where he plays the hi hat
peacelord I like the part where he breathes
This was Max Roach. He was an inovator in drums and jazz. A musical genius.
The fact that he can compose a beat from this one piece of the entire drum set is phenominal. Don't you think that's pretty cool? I sure do. :o)
He was still alive when you wrote this, wow!
@@peacewillhappen I also wasn't born yet!
freakingKiller, dude, I'm one of the biggest Steve Smith fans of all time, yet I still realize that without people like Max Roach, the Steve Smith's would have had nothing to follow.
Exactly, we wouldn't have the drummers of today without him.
0.44 Frisking the high hat
James Dixon Hilarious!!!!!!
Pure old school knowledge of his craft
Do you honestly think that the term 'good' has a universal meaning?!?!
The man was revolutionary. He completely changed the role of percussion in music. All that he did may not have been 'good' to all ears, but he changed the way beat is used today... his ifluence is so pervasive its its simply hard to imagine the evolved state of beat today without him.
he's simply FANTAAAASTIC!!!!!!
this is amazing. I can almost here the jazz song blaring behind it in a smokey jazz club dungeon
I saw him do this hi hat solo in Seattle in 1997. Very cool to see in person.
MAX is the MAXimum of drums!
he's like "F*** all you with your full kit. I Only need a hi hat and i can play a song" That's amazing
Lol, he's the absolute master of the hats... he's not dumbstruck at all !
I love all these new rock/metal drummers you see with their shirts off and stuff, and then you see guys like Roach and Buddy Rich wearing suits and stuff and still out-playing them a lot of the time.
God whose sick of hearing about Buddy Rich? He was great..That's fine. Max Roach is creative, ingenuitive, and tasteful.
But he does look like Obama....and it's more than his skin color, so get it over that.
mobrules29 umm...no
Obama with depression
there are no words!
Nice to see him holding the sticks correctly.
I totally agree with timrooney84. The stuff on those clifford brown recordings are incredible.
i watch this stuff and, as amazing as it is, and as much as i love it, i also realize that it's not that we drummers can't do it. it's that he DID do it.
A true Master.
i think you guys don't get how fantastic the snare video is ^^ just because this sounds faster
both are great !
Yeah, there's no label that says anything, but they came with the Rockwood drumset by Hohner. They are massivly dented and it's only been a few weeks. I'll think of buying new ones.
this guys fast. i did a report on him in school, but i had no idea how amazing he is.
You mean Obama looks like him... One is a bit older than the other... Respect Max!
Man, this guy is good.
For his next trick, Max will solo on a car battery, with pencils, and still only be scraping the surface of his genius. I miss Max!
Thanks for posting this. I recommend Rich Versus Roach which is out on CD.
A great study in contrasting, extraordinary techniques.
I agree. And Max doesn't sweat the bitches..."I'll see ya around" he says, and damned if he does. Max is just that kinda guy. And the bitches recognize it! Long live the for real deal.
him and Buddy are basically even in my books. Go listen to Rich versus Roach ;)
This guy is absolutely fucking sick, so much skill involved for his type of drumming. Some people have no idea
Don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. I've just realized that he recently past away and that's a shame.
RIP Max.
RATTLING HI-HAT
TRAP INFLUENCE
He is gone now, but his legend shall live, and his music shall resonate for as long as there will be drums.
Speechless. Possibly the coolest thing I'll see all week. Rhythmic geniuses leave me envious and in awe. RIP good man.
A master in the truest sense. Sublime.
people think about drums in 1 dimension, i love how he shows us that you can take one hi hat (not 27 piece drum set) and still do amazing things.
Dam too good
In addition to running fast food chains and drug cartels, Gustavo Fring was also a world-class drummer.
stewart copeland is no slouch with his metal either , and he was able to work it into pop main stream songs , smith is awesome also
hes so amazing the speed involved and the rythms are killer, the other "Max Roach at his best" should be this one instead !
he is playing with the whole thing!
wow i'm really impressed! wowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowsucks
incredible skills..
RIP Max
Legend
@Orancube He invented human cooling. He can do anything. He's Max Roach ffs.
thts bad ass.
Holy COW!!! I think System of a Down stole that and turned it into a song... WOW!
One of the best drummers of all time.
he just quadrupled all that i can do on a full set with one piece... good lord i suck and he is fricken amazing. Also there is an argument over who is the goat of drumming.. and while buddy rich is overall favorite... that is too general..y cant we just hav a big category of great drummers
dude i can do that...no prob thats easy!!
PURE FIRE !!!!
crazy oldman
damn, obama is really good at the drums
Somehow I missed that. Well, the idea was there anyway.
Outstanding.
Man, I love hihat work. It has so much personality in it.
This sounds like some MISSION IMPOSSIBLE or some I SPY shit!!! 10 STARS for MAX ROACH...and I thought he was a WHITEMAN. HOLLA!!!
I saw him live in London when he was really old, and he was still amazing. I still get teased about how i raved on and on about his playing afterwards.
This guys needs to make a jazz song with a band a just hi hat. Thats back to the basics
there is one on my page!!
@WindyCityJazz i'm not calling anyone stupid, I said "dont BE stupid" I didnt say "you are stupid"... thats 2 different things in my language.. Fucking awesome

Hehe, his face is dumbstruck at 1:24 because he meant to hit it completley open for a final crash, but it was just another closed sound.

I can hear this being played in metal. So dope.
