Genes are a part of the DNA that transmits genetic information, that is, all the characteristics we inherit from our parents. Most cells in the body have two sets of DNA that are received from each of our parents. Sex cells are exceptions to this structure since they come from cells that divide their DNA in half. This division of genetic material is called meiosis. Mitosis is the process by which the cell makes an exact copy of its genetic material before it divides.
